One of the best examples of this legacy is the group of Croatian generals and admirals who brought fame to Croatian soldiers on battlefields across Europe. Among them was Martin Vrkljan von Pilar, an Austro-Hungarian Army lieutenant field marshal, originally from Pilar near St. roch (Sv. rok). Like other generals from the Lika region, he earned his ranks on the battlefield, particularly during World War I, for which he was awarded two high decorations for bravery and leadership in combat. These honors also secured him a noble title. He demonstrated his loyalty to his birthplace by choosing the noble predicate „von Pilar“, derived from his native village. His Croatian patriotism was further expressed through his active membership in the society „Brethren of the Croatian Dragon“, for which he received a dragon emblem and the honorary name „Dragon of Pilar.

Combination of cyclopamine and tamoxifen promotes survival and migration of MCF-7 breast cancer cells – interaction of Hedgehog-Gli and Estrogen receptor signaling pathways

Hedgehog-Gli (Hh-Gli) signaling pathway is one of the new molecular targets found upregulated in breast tumors. Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) signaling has a key role in the development of hormone-dependent breast cancer. We aimed to investigate the effects of inhibiting both pathways simultaneously on breast cancer cell survival and the potential interactions between these two signaling pathways. ER-positive MCF-7 cells show decreased viability after treatment with cyclopamine, a Hh-Gli pathway inhibitor, as well as after tamoxifen (an ERα inhibitor) treatment. Simultaneous treatment with cyclopamine and tamoxifen on the other hand, causes short-term survival of cells, and increased migration. We found upregulated Hh-Gli signaling under these conditions and protein profiling revealed increased expression of proteins involved in cell proliferation and migration. Therefore, even though Hh-Gli signaling seems to be a good potential target for breast cancer therapy, caution must be advised, especially when combining therapies. In addition, we also show a potential direct interaction between the Shh protein and ERα in MCF-7 cells. Our data suggest that the Shh protein is able to activate ERα independently of the canonical Hh-Gli signaling pathway. Therefore, this may present an additional boost for ER-positive cells that express Shh, even in the absence of estroge

Every company aims to attract employees who can contribute to its success. However, in today's business environment, simply posting job ads isn't enough to secure top talent. Instead, companies need to target specific candidates, advertise job openings effectively, and leverage their marketing efforts to highlight the opportunities they offer. One potential strategy is to enhance the compensation package to attract skilled candidates. While attracting for military organizations wasn't a significant challenge in the past, factors like technological advancements, competition from civilian sectors, and the stress of combat operations have made it increasingly difficult to attract new recruits, especially those with specialized skills. Furthermore, the lack of soldiers and officers candidates has become a serious problem in the execution of the missions of military organization. To address this, military organizations are exploring ways to offer more appealing benefits and incentives to potential candidates. Regarding everything previously mentioned, the paper investigates the impact of elements of compensation on attracting employees to the military organization. Accordingly, the research goal is to explore and analyze the impact of compensation on the attraction of employees to a military organization. Based on this aim, a fundamental hypothesis is formulated for this study, and it states: compensation and its aspects have a significant influence on the attraction of employees to a military organization. To explore the aforementioned hypothesis and fulfill the research goals, various scientific research methods were employed in this study. Initially, the descriptive method was used to describe and explain variables related to the hypotheses. Additionally, the comparative method was applied to compare the subject variables, processes, phenomena, and relationships. Throughout the study, methods such as generalization, specialization, analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, abstraction, and concretization were also utilized to deepen the understanding of the research subject. The results obtained from the research show that, in addition to traditional direct financial elements such as salaries, some other indirect financial elements such as benefits have an impact on the increased interest in entering a military service. In addition, the results indicate that individual countries have more closely been studying the reasons for a decreased interest joining military forces, while trying to create short-term and long-term strategies to overcome that situation. The paper also considers attracting employees to civil firms

This study investigates the incidence of some pathological changes and causes of deaths in zoo animals in the Republic of Croatia, whose carcasses were submitted to pathological analysis to the Department of Veterinary Pathology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb in a six years period (1.1.2009 - 31.12.2014). Out of a total of 247 processed animals, 243 were from the Zoological Garden of Zagreb, and only 4 from the Zoological Garden of Osijek. The most common submitted animals were mammals (127), birds (60), reptiles (57) and les common amphibians (3). There were three different causes of death (septicemia, amyloidosis and enteritis) diagnosed in the amphibians. In the reptiles, the most common cause of death was infection, and traumas and degenerative diseases were also among more prevalent causes. In the birds, the most frequent cause of death was trauma, followed by infection and degenerative changes. In the mammals, the most common cause of death was lung inflammation, followed by septicemia, and trauma and inflammation of the intestine. The overall results of our research show that the causes of deaths of animals in the Zoo of Zagreb are not significantly different from the causes of deaths mentioned in the literature, and that infectious diseases prevail, while the proportion of traumas and parasitic invasions is lower compared to the results presented in the literature available to us. The results of our study confirms application of pathological for better dissases control and prevention of spreading of zoonotic diseases
