Effects of small surface tension in Hele-Shaw multifinger dynamics: an analytical and numerical study
We study the singular effects of vanishingly small surface tension on the
dynamics of finger competition in the Saffman-Taylor problem, using the
asymptotic techniques described in [S. Tanveer, Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. A
343, 155 (1993)]and [M. Siegel, and S. Tanveer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 419
(1996)] as well as direct numerical computation, following the numerical scheme
of [T. Hou, J. Lowengrub, and M. Shelley,J. Comp. Phys. 114, 312 (1994)]. We
demonstrate the dramatic effects of small surface tension on the late time
evolution of two-finger configurations with respect to exact (non-singular)
zero surface tension solutions. The effect is present even when the relevant
zero surface tension solution has asymptotic behavior consistent with selection
theory.Such singular effects therefore cannot be traced back to steady state
selection theory, and imply a drastic global change in the structure of
phase-space flow. They can be interpreted in the framework of a recently
introduced dynamical solvability scenario according to which surface tension
unfolds the structually unstable flow, restoring the hyperbolicity of

A phase-field model of Hele-Shaw flows in the high viscosity contrast regime
A one-sided phase-field model is proposed to study the dynamics of unstable
interfaces of Hele-Shaw flows in the high viscosity contrast regime. The
corresponding macroscopic equations are obtained by means of an asymptotic
expansion from the phase-field model. Numerical integrations of the phase-field
model in a rectangular Hele-Shaw cell reproduce finger competition with the
final evolution to a steady state finger the width of which goes to one half of
the channel width as the velocity increases
Viscous fingering in liquid crystals: Anisotropy and morphological transitions
We show that a minimal model for viscous fingering with a nematic liquid
crystal in which anisotropy is considered to enter through two different
viscosities in two perpendicular directions can be mapped to a two-fold
anisotropy in the surface tension. We numerically integrate the dynamics of the
resulting problem with the phase-field approach to find and characterize a
transition between tip-splitting and side-branching as a function of both
anisotropy and dimensionless surface tension. This anisotropy dependence could
explain the experimentally observed (reentrant) transition as temperature and
applied pressure are varied. Our observations are also consistent with previous
experimental evidence in viscous fingering within an etched cell and

Comparing resonant photon tunneling via cavity modes and Tamm plasmon polariton modes in metal-coated Bragg mirrors
Resonant photon tunneling was investigated experimentally in multilayer structures containing a high-contrast (TiO2/SiO2) Bragg mirror capped with a semitransparent gold film. Transmission via a fundamental cavity resonance was compared with transmission via the Tamm plasmon polariton resonance that appears at the interface between a metal film and a one-dimensional photonic bandgap structure. The Tamm-plasmon-mediated transmission exhibits a smaller dependence on the angle and polarization of the incident light for similar values of peak transmission, resonance wavelength, and finesse. Implications for transparent electrical contacts based on resonant tunneling structures are discussed
Attracting Manifold for a Viscous Topology Transition
An analytical method is developed describing the approach to a finite-time
singularity associated with collapse of a narrow fluid layer in an unstable
Hele-Shaw flow. Under the separation of time scales near a bifurcation point, a
long-wavelength mode entrains higher-frequency modes, as described by a version
of Hill's equation. In the slaved dynamics, the initial-value problem is solved
explicitly, yielding the time and analytical structure of a singularity which
is associated with the motion of zeroes in the complex plane. This suggests a

Methodology for developing an advanced communications system for the Deaf in a new domain
A methodology for developing an advanced communications system for the Deaf in a new domain is presented in this paper. This methodology is a user-centred design approach consisting of four main steps: requirement analysis, parallel corpus generation, technology adaptation to the new domain, and finally, system evaluation. During the requirement analysis, both the user and technical requirements are evaluated and defined. For generating the parallel corpus, it is necessary to collect Spanish sentences in the new domain and translate them into LSE (Lengua de Signos Española: Spanish Sign Language). LSE is represented by glosses and using video recordings. This corpus is used for training the two main modules of the advanced communications system to the new domain: the spoken Spanish into the LSE translation module and the Spanish generation from the LSE module. The main aspects to be generated are the vocabularies for both languages (Spanish words and signs), and the knowledge for translating in both directions. Finally, the field evaluation is carried out with deaf people using the advanced communications system to interact with hearing people in several scenarios. In this evaluation, the paper proposes several objective and subjective measurements for evaluating the performance. In this paper, the new considered domain is about dialogues in a hotel reception. Using this methodology, the system was developed in several months, obtaining very good performance: good translation rates (10% Sign Error Rate) with small processing times, allowing face-to-face dialogues
Capture and inception of bubbles near line vortices
Motivated by the need to predict vortex cavitation inception, a study has been conducted to investigate bubble capture by a concentrated line vortex of core size rcrc and circulation Γ0Γ0 under noncavitating and cavitating conditions. Direct numerical simulations that solve simultaneously for the two phase flow field, as well as a simpler one-way coupled point-particle-tracking model (PTM) were used to investigate the capture process. The capture times were compared to experimental observations. It was found that the point-particle-tracking model can successfully predict the capture of noncavitating small nuclei by a line vortex released far from the vortex axis. The nucleus grows very slowly during capture until the late stages of the process, where bubble/vortex interaction and bubble deformation become important. Consequently, PTM can be used to study the capture of cavitating nuclei by dividing the process into the noncavitating capture of the nucleus, and then the growth of the nucleus in the low-pressure core region. The 1874-1876 volcano-tectonic episode at Askja, North Iceland: Lateral flow revisited
The Askja volcanic system, North Iceland, experienced a volcano-tectonic episode between 1874 and 1876, the climax of which was a rhyolitic, phreatoplinian to Plinian eruption at Askja central volcano on 28–29 March 1875. Fissure eruptions also occurred in 1875, producing the Nýjahraun lava, 45–65 km north of Askja. The Nýjahraun basalt is indistinguishable, in terms of whole-rock major elements, from the small-volume basaltic eruptions that took place at Askja in the early 20th century. It has been suggested that all of these basalts originated from a shallow magma chamber beneath Askja, with the Nýjahraun eruptions being fed by northward-propagating lateral dykes. It has also been conjectured that the Holuhraun lava, located at the southern tip of the Askja volcanic system 15–25 km south of Askja, was connected with the 1874–1876 Askja volcano-tectonic episode. We re-examine these interpretations in light of new whole-rock, glass and melt inclusion analyses from samples collected along the length of the Askja volcanic system. Glasses from Nýjahraun and the Askja 20th century eruptions are geochemically distinct. We suggest that the Askja 20th century basalts mixed with evolved melts in the crust, while the Nýjahraun magma evolved without such interactions. The Holuhraun basalt is more similar to lavas erupted on the Bárðarbunga-Veiðivötn volcanic system than to postglacial basalts from Askja, indicating that particular geochemical signatures are not necessarily confined to the tectonic or structural surface expression of single volcanic systems. 2D characterization of near-surface V P/V S: surface-wave dispersion inversion versus refraction tomography
International audienceThe joint study of pressure (P-) and shear (S-) wave velocities (Vp and Vs ), as well as their ratio (Vp /Vs), has been used for many years at large scales but remains marginal in near-surface applications. For these applications, and are generally retrieved with seismic refraction tomography combining P and SH (shear-horizontal) waves, thus requiring two separate acquisitions. Surface-wave prospecting methods are proposed here as an alternative to SH-wave tomography in order to retrieve pseudo-2D Vs sections from typical P-wave shot gathers and assess the applicability of combined P-wave refraction tomography and surface-wave dispersion analysis to estimate Vp/Vs ratio. We carried out a simultaneous P- and surface-wave survey on a well-characterized granite-micaschists contact at Ploemeur hydrological observatory (France), supplemented with an SH-wave acquisition along the same line in order to compare Vs results obtained from SH-wave refraction tomography and surface-wave profiling. Travel-time tomography was performed with P- and SH- wave first arrivals observed along the line to retrieve Vtomo p and Vtomo s models. Windowing and stacking techniques were then used to extract evenly spaced dispersion data from P-wave shot gathers along the line. Successive 1D Monte Carlo inversions of these dispersion data were performed using fixed Vp values extracted from Vtomo p the model and no lateral constraints between two adjacent 1D inversions. The resulting 1D Vsw s models were then assembled to create a pseudo-2D Vsw s section, which appears to be correctly matching the general features observed on the section. If the pseudo-section is characterized by strong velocity incertainties in the deepest layers, it provides a more detailed description of the lateral variations in the shallow layers. Theoretical dispersion curves were also computed along the line with both and models. While the dispersion curves computed from models provide results consistent with the coherent maxima observed on dispersion images, dispersion curves computed from models are generally not fitting the observed propagation modes at low frequency. Surface-wave analysis could therefore improve models both in terms of reliability and ability to describe lateral variations. Finally, we were able to compute / sections from both and models. The two sections present similar features, but the section obtained from shows a higher lateral resolution and is consistent with the features observed on electrical resistivity tomography, thus validating our approach for retrieving Vp/Vs ratio from combined P-wave tomography and surface-wave profiling
