Semi-leptonic Decays of Heavy Quarks in Dijet Photoproduction at HERA
The production of heavy quarks has been studied in photoproduction processes
with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of . Events with a photon virtuality, , were selected with
two jets of high transverse energy and an electron in the final state.
Consideration of the distribution in - the momentum of the electron
transverse to the axis of the jet to which the electron is closest - allows a
measurement of the beauty cross-section in a restricted region of phase space.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. To appear in DIS99 conference proceeding
Comparison of a reverse-transverse cross pin technique with a same side cross pin type II external skeletal fixator in 89 dogs
The objective of this study was to determine whether a novel reverse-transverse cross pin insertion technique could increase the stability of type II external skeletal fixators (ESF) in dogs compared with an alternate, same side cross pin ESF. Reverse-transverse cross pin technique and type II ESFs same side cross pin technique were applied and compared among subjects. Two of 42 ESFs (4.8%) applied with the reverse-transverse cross pin technique and 39 of 47 ESFs (83%) applied with the same side cross pin technique were subjectively unstable at the time of fixator removal (P < 0.001). The same side cross pin ESFs had significantly more pin tract new bone formation than the reverse-transverse ESFs (P = 0.038). In summary, this approach may provide a method of treating a variety of musculoskeletal conditions and soft tissue cases, which reverse-transverse cross pin ESFs are tolerated in dogs for a variety of conditions
Explosive Percolation on Directed Networks Due to Monotonic Flow of Activity
An important class of real-world networks have directed edges, and in
addition, some rank ordering on the nodes, for instance the "popularity" of
users in online social networks. Yet, nearly all research related to explosive
percolation has been restricted to undirected networks. Furthermore,
information on such rank ordered networks typically flows from higher ranked to
lower ranked individuals, such as follower relations, replies and retweets on
Twitter.
Here we introduce a simple percolation process on an ordered, directed
network where edges are added monotonically with respect to the rank ordering.
We show with a numerical approach that the emergence of a dominant strongly
connected component appears to be discontinuous. Large scale connectivity
occurs at very high density compared with most percolation processes, and this
holds not just for the strongly connected component structure but for the
weakly connected component structure as well. We present analysis with
branching processes which explains this unusual behavior and gives basic
intuition for the underlying mechanisms. We also show that before the emergence
of a dominant strongly connected component, multiple giant strongly connected
components may exist simultaneously. By adding a competitive percolation rule
with a small bias to link uses of similar rank, we show this leads to formation
of two distinct components, one of high ranked users, and one of low ranked
users, with little flow between the two components

Global Optimization Of Quasi-Monoenergetic Electron Beams From Laser Wakefield Accelerators
We globally optimize a terawatt-laser-driven wakefield accelerator by systematically varying laser and target parameters to achieve 100 MeV electrons, 10% energy spread, 100 pC charge, 4 mrad divergence and 10 mrad pointing fluctuation with similar to 100% reproducibility, thereby meeting conditions for producing similar to 10(6) 200 keV X-ray photons/pulse by inverse Compton scatter.Physic

Microfluidic immunomagnetic multi-target sorting – a model for controlling deflection of paramagnetic beads
We describe a microfluidic system that uses a magnetic field to sort paramagnetic beads by deflecting them in the direction normal to the flow. Our experiments systematically study the dependence of the beads’ deflection on: bead size and susceptibility, magnet strength, fluid speed and viscosity, and device geometry. We also develop a design parameter that can aid in the design of microfluidic devices for immunomagnetic multi-target sorting
User's manual for PEPSIG NASA tip vortex version
The tip vortex flowfield plays a significant role in the performance of advanced aircraft propellers. The flowfield in the tip region is complex, three-dimensional and viscous with large secondary velocities. A computer code was developed to predict the tip vortex flowfield of advanced aircraft propellers. This document is the user's manual. The analysis and a series of test cases are presented in NASA-CR-182179
Improved Spin Dynamics Simulations of Magnetic Excitations
Using Suzuki-Trotter decompositions of exponential operators we describe new
algorithms for the numerical integration of the equations of motion for
classical spin systems. These techniques conserve spin length exactly and, in
special cases, also conserve the energy and maintain time reversibility. We
investigate integration schemes of up to eighth order and show that these new
algorithms can be used with much larger time steps than a well established
predictor-corrector method. These methods may lead to a substantial speedup of
spin dynamics simulations, however, the choice of which order method to use is
not always straightforward.Comment: J. Mod. Phys. C (in press
Analysis of short pulse laser altimetry data obtained over horizontal path
Recent pulsed measurements of atmospheric delay obtained by ranging to the more realistic targets including a simulated ocean target and an extended plate target are discussed. These measurements are used to estimate the expected timing accuracy of a correlation receiver system. The experimental work was conducted using a pulsed two color laser altimeter
