Altered fasting and postprandial plasma ghrelin levels in patients with liver failure are normalized after liver transplantation

[Abstract] Context Anorexia is a problem of paramount importance in patients with advanced liver failure. Ghrelin has important actions on feeding and weight homeostasis. Experimental data exist, which suggest that ghrelin could protect hepatic tissue. Both fasting and post-oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) ghrelin concentrations are controversial in liver cirrhosis and are unknown after liver transplantation. Objective Our aim was to study fasting ghrelin concentrations and their response to an OGTT in liver failure patients before and after liver transplantation. Design and methods We included 21 patients with severe liver failure studied before (pretransplantation, PreT) and 6 months after liver transplantation (posttransplantation, PostT), and 10 age- and body mass index-matched healthy or overweight subjects as the control group (Cont). After an overnight fast, 75 g of oral glucose were administered; glucose, insulin, and ghrelin were obtained at baseline and at times 30, 60, 90, and 120 min. Results Fasting ghrelin (median and range, pg/ml) levels were lower in PreT: 539 (309–1262) than in Cont: 643 (523–2163), P=0.045. Fasting ghrelin levels increased after liver transplantation, 539 (309–1262) vs 910 (426–3305), for PreT and PostT respectively, P=0.001. The area under the curve (AUC) of ghrelin (pg/ml min) was lower in PreT: 63 900 (37 260–148 410) than in Cont: 76 560 (56 160–206 385), P=0.027. The AUC of ghrelin increased in PostT, 63 900 (37 260–148 410) vs 107 595 (59 535–357 465), for PreT and PostT respectively, P=0.001. Fasting levels and the AUC of ghrelin were similar in PosT and Cont. A abordagem CTS na forma??o de professores de ci?ncias: os temas/problemas do sudoeste do Paran?

The purpose of this work of Course (TCC) in the course of Biological Sciences - Degree at the Federal University of South Border - UFFS Campus Royalty - PR is to understand the potential of broader approach through issues / problems with a focus on Science, technology and Society (CTS), the training of teachers and students about the processes of teaching and learning. The problematics of these relationships in contemporary society is something that can be present in the science classroom, thereby building in conjunction with many other areas of knowledge. The research toured several ways, and the proposal is to construct issues-issues about the approach that questions the relationship between Science, Technology and Society (CTS), and dengue, AIDS, abortion, water and food. Yet a second time documentary search in local newspapers and electronic sites, for example, Secretary of the State of Paran? Health in order to understand the publicity aspects related to the problem of dengue epidemic in southwest Paran? perspective of Textual Analysis Discourse (ATD) proposed by Moraes and Galiazzi (2007). We argue that the focus CTS provides opportunities processes of teaching and learning more complex the science classroom, as gives opportunity the decision-making on issues / local problems like the ones mentioned, and contributes towards understanding about the various looks about these problems.A proposta desse Trabalho de Conclus?o de Curso (TCC) no curso de Ci?ncias Biol?gicas ? PR ? compreender a potencialidade da abordagem mais ampla por meio de temas/problemas com enfoque em Ci?ncia, Tecnologia e Sociedade (CTS), a forma??o de professores e de alunos quanto aos processos de ensinar e de aprender. A problematiza??o dessas rela??es na sociedade contempor?nea ? algo que pode estar presente na sala de aula de Ci?ncias, construindo assim na articula??o com outras tantas ?reas do conhecimento. O trabalho de pesquisa percorreu diversos caminhos, sendo que a proposta consiste na constru??o de temas-problemas acerca do enfoque que problematiza as rela??es entre Ci?ncia, Tecnologia e Sociedade (CTS), sendo: dengue, AIDS, aborto, ?gua e alimentos. Ainda num segundo momento a busca documental em jornais locais e s?tios eletr?nicos, por exemplo, Secretaria da Sa?de do Estado do Paran? no intuito de entendermos a publiciza??o de aspectos relacionados ao problema da epidemia da dengue na regi?o sudoeste do Paran? numa perspectiva da An?lise Textual Discursiva (ATD) proposta por Moraes e Galiazzi (2007).
