    An innovative, fast and facile soft-template approach for the fabrication of porous PDMS for oil-water separation

    Oil wastewater and spilled oil caused serious environmental pollution and damage to public health in the last years. Therefore, considerable efforts are made to develop sorbent materials able to separate oil from water with high selectivity and sorption capacity. However most of them are low reusable, with low volume absorption capacity and poor mechanical properties. Moreover, the synthesis is time-consuming, complex and expensive limiting its practical application in case of emergency. Here we propose an innovative approach for the fabrication of porous PDMS starting from an inverse water-in-silicone procedure able to selectively collect oil from water in few seconds. The synthesis is dramatically faster than previous approaches, permitting the fabrication of the material in few minutes independently from the dimension of the sponges. The porous material evidenced a higher volume sorption capacity with respect to other materials already proposed for oil sorption from water and excellent mechanical and reusability properties.This innovative fast and simple approach can be successful in case of emergency, as oil spill accidents, permitting in situ fabrication of porous absorbents

    Wrinkling in engineering fabrics: a comparison between two different comprehensive modelling approaches

    We consider two ‘comprehensive’ modelling approaches for engineering fabrics. We distinguish the two approaches using the terms ‘semi-discrete’ and ‘continuum’, reflecting their natures. We demonstrate a fitting procedure, used to identify the constitutive parameters of the continuum model from predictions of the semi-discrete model, the parameters of which are in turn fitted to experimental data. We, then, check the effectiveness of the continuum model by verifying the correspondence between semi-discrete and continuum model predictions using test cases not previously used in the identification process. Predictions of both modelling approaches are compared against full-field experimental kinematic data, obtained using stereoscopic digital image correlation techniques, and also with measured force data. Being a reduced order model and being implemented in an implicit rather than an explicit finite-element code, the continuum model requires significantly less computational power than the semi-discrete model and could therefore be used to more efficiently explore the mechanical response of engineering fabrics

    Reconstructing blockages in a symmetric duct via quasi-isospectral horn operators

    This paper proposes a new method for the reconstruction of the blockage area function in a symmetric duct by resonant frequencies under a given set of end conditions, i.e., open open or closed-closed ends. The analysis is based on the explicit determination of quasi-isospectral ducts, that is duct profiles which have the same spectrum as a given duct with the exception of a single eigenfrequency which is free to move in a prescribed interval. The analytical reconstruction was numerically implemented and tested for the detection of blockages. Numerical results show that the accuracy of identification increases with the number of eigenfrequencies used and that the reconstruction is rather stable with respect to the shape, the size and the position of the blockages

    Integrated stratigraphy and astronomical calibration of the Serravallian/Tortonian boundary section at Monte Gibliscemi (Sicily, Italy)

    Results are presented of an integrated stratigraphic (calcareous plankton biostratigraphy, cyclostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy) study of the Serravallian=Tortonian (S=T) boundary section of Monte Gibliscemi (Sicily, Italy). Astronomical calibration of the sedimentary cycles provides absolute ages for calcareous plankton bio-events in the interval between 9.8 and 12.1 Ma. The first occurrence (FO) of Neogloboquadrina acostaensis, usually taken to delimit the S=T boundary, is dated astronomically at 11.781 Ma, pre-dating the migratory arrival of the species at low latitudes in the Atlantic by almost 2 million years. In contrast to delayed low-latitude arrival of N. acostaensis, Paragloborotalia mayeri shows a delayed low-latitude extinction of slightly more than 0.7 million years with respect to the Mediterranean (last occurrence (LO) at 10.49 Ma at Ceara Rise; LO at 11.205 Ma in the Mediterranean). The Discoaster hamatus FO, dated at 10.150 Ma, is clearly delayed with respect to the open ocean. The ages of D. kugleri first and last common occurrence (FCO and LCO), Catinaster coalitus FO, Coccolithus miopelagicus last (regular) occurrence (L(R)O) and the D. hamatus=neohamatus cross-over, however, are in good to excellent agreement with astronomically tuned ages for the same events at Ceara Rise (tropical Atlantic), suggesting that both independently established timescales are consistent with one another. The lack of a reliable magnetostratigraphy hampers a direct comparison with the geomagnetic polarity timescale of Cande and Kent (1995; CK95), but ages of calcareous nannofossil events suggests that CK95 is significantly younger over the studied time interval. Approximate astronomical ages for the polarity reversals were obtained by exporting astronomical ages of selected nannofossil events from Ceara Rise (and the Mediterranean) to eastern equatorial Pacific ODP Leg 138 Site 845, which has a reliable magnetostratigraphy. Our data from the Rio Mazzapiedi-Castellania section reveal that the base of the Tortonian stratotype corresponds almost exactly with the first regular occurrence (FRO) of N. acostaensis s.s. as defined in the present study, dated at 10.554 Ma. An extrapolated age of 11.8 Ma calculated for the top of the Serravallian stratotype indicates that there is a gap between the top of the Serravallian and the base of the Tortonian stratotype, potentially rendering all bio-events in the interval between 11.8 and 10.554 Ma suitable for delimiting the S=T boundary. Despite the tectonic deformation and the lack of a magnetostratigraphy, Gibliscemi remains a candidate to define the S=T boundary by means of the Tortonian global boundary stratotype section and point (GSSP)

    Computing Volume Bounds of Inclusions by EIT Measurements

    The size estimates approach for Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) allows for estimating the size (area or volume) of an unknown inclusion in an electrical conductor by means of one pair of boundary measurements of voltage and current. In this paper we show by numerical simulations how to obtain such bounds for practical application of the method.     Avaliaram-se os efeitos de dietas com diferentes níveis do feno de erva sal (Atriplex nummularia Lindl.) sobre os consumos de matéria seca (MS), proteína bruta (PB), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e carboidratos totais (CHO) e, ainda, sobre o ganho de peso diário e a conversão alimentar da MS em ovinos. Utilizaram-se 20 carneiros naturalizados, com peso vivo médio inicial de 23,0 kg, submetidos a um delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado e alimentados em gaiolas para metabolismo com piso ripado. Foram avaliadas cinco dietas contendo diferentes níveis de feno de erva sal (38,30; 52,55; 64,57; 74,85 e 83,72%) associado à melancia forrageira (Citrulus lanatus cv. citroides) e a raspa de mandioca (Manihot esculenta Crantz), enriquecida com 5% de uréia. A adição do feno de erva sal nas dietas não alterou a média do consumo diário da MS, PB e CHO, expressos em g/dia, %PV e g/kg0,75/dia, respectivamente. O consumo de FDN aumentou linearmente em %PV e g/kg0,75/dia. A eficiência de conversão alimentar da MS diminuiu linearmente, em função dos percentuais de volumoso utilizado. Os ganhos de peso vivo aos 21, 28, 35 e 42 dias sofreram redução linear com a elevação dos níveis de feno nas dietas. As médias diárias de ganho de peso vivo obtido pelos carneiros, ao longo do período de engorda, revelaram um bom potencial forrageiro do feno de erva sal combinado em quaisquer das proporções estudadas com melancia forrageira e com raspa de mandioc

    Boceprevir is highly effective in treatment-experienced hepatitis C virus-positive genotype-1 menopausal women

    AIM: To investigate the safety/efficacy of Boceprevirbased triple therapy in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-G1 menopausal women who were historic relapsers, partial-responders and null-responders. METHODS: In this single-assignment, unblinded study, we treated fifty-six menopausal women with HCV-G1, 46% F3-F4, and previous PEG-α/RBV failure (7% null, 41% non-responder, and 52% relapser) with 4 wk lead-in with PEG-IFNα2b/RBV followed by PEGIFNα2b/RBV+Boceprevir for 32 wk, with an additional 12 wk of PEG-IFN-α-2b/RBV if patients were HCV-RNA-positive by week 8. In previous null-responders, 44 wk of triple therapy was used. The primary objective of retreatment was to verify whether a sustained virological response (SVR) (HCV RNA undetectable at 24 wk of follow-up) rate of at least 20% could be obtained. The secondary objective was the evaluation of the percent of patients with negative HCV RNA at week 4 (RVR), 8 (RVR BOC), 12 (EVR), or at the end-of-treatment (ETR) that reached SVR. To assess the relationship between SVR and clinical and biochemical parameters, multiple logistic regression analysis was used. RESULTS: After lead-in, only two patients had RVR; HCV-RNA was unchanged in all but 62% who had ≤ 1 logio decrease. After Boceprevir, HCV RNA became undetectable at week 8 in 32/56 (57.1%) and at week 12 in 41/56 (73.2%). Of these, 53.8% and 52.0%, respectively, achieved SVR. Overall, SVR was obtained in 25/56 (44.6%). SVR was achieved in 55% previous relapsers vs. 41% non-responders (Ρ = 0.250), in 44% F0-F2 vs 54% F3-F4 (Ρ = 0.488), and in 11/19 (57.9%) of patients with cirrhosis. At univariate analysis for baseline predictors of SVR, only previous response to antiviral therapy (OR = 2.662, 95%CI: 0.957-6.881, Ρ= 0.043), was related with SVR. When considering "on treatment" factors, 1 log10 HCV RNA decline at week 4 (3.733, 95%CI: 1.676-12.658, Ρ= 0.034) and achievement of RVR BOC (7.347, 95%CI: 2.156-25.035, Ρ= 0.001) were significantly related with the SVR, al-though RVR BOC only (6.794, 95%CI: 1.596-21.644, Ρ = 0.010) maintained significance at multivariate logistic regression analysis. Anemia and neutropenia were managed with Erythropoietin and Filgrastim supplementation, respectively. Only six patients discontinued therapy. CONCLUSION: Boceprevir obtained high SVR response independent of previous response, RVR or baseline fibrosis or cirrhosis. RVR BOC was the only independent predictor of SVR
