    Settlement history and sustainability in the Carpathians in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries

    As part of a historical study of the Carpathian ecoregion, to identify salient features of the changing human geography, this paper deals with the 18th and 19th centuries when there was a large measure political unity arising from the expansion of the Habsburg Empire. In addition to a growth of population, economic expansion - particularly in the railway age - greatly increased pressure on resources: evident through peasant colonisation of high mountain surfaces (as in the Apuseni Mountains) as well as industrial growth most evident in a number of metallurgical centres and the logging activity following the railway alignments through spruce-fir forests. Spa tourism is examined and particular reference is made to the pastoral economy of the Sibiu area nourished by long-wave transhumance until more stringent frontier controls gave rise to a measure of diversification and resettlement. It is evident that ecological risk increased, with some awareness of the need for conservation, although substantial innovations did not occur until after the First World War.The Carpathian ecoregion, Habsburg Empire, settlement history

    Making practice-based learning work

The Making Practice-Based Learning Work project has developed a Web site that aims to enhance the quality of student experiences whilst on practice, i.e. work-based placements. Key parts are the learning materials and resource sections containing materials that can be used by anyone involved in many aspects of practice-based student supervision, including supervisor preparation and support. These resources were either commissioned by the project or externally sourced Web materials have been peer reviewed. The materials are freely available for anyone to use in enhancing the nature of practice education

    Enhancing teaching and learning with technology through collaborative research with students

    There is increasing awareness that technological developments should enhance student learning experience and compliment traditional teaching methodologies (McGugan and Peakcock, 2005). The recently published JISC inquiry into the implications of Web 2.0 technology for higher education (2009), highlighted how learners make effective use of Web 2.0 technology in social contexts. However, at present our knowledge of how university students and staff engage with and use technologies, including Web 2.0 technology, both through the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and outside of it is limited. This project aimed to explore how Sport Sciences students expect, use, and would like to see, technologies used to enhance their learning whilst at university. The project adopted a collaborative approach by involving students in development of the study, particularly in assisting with design of data collection tools, participant recruitment and interpretation of findings. The study involved interviewing twenty-one students about their familiarity and use of Web 2.0 technologies. These students also gave ideas for potential technological enhancements within the sport curriculum. This data then formed the basis of a staff and a student questionnaire used to ascertain broader views of technologies as well as the perceived potential of such technologies to enhance student learning. The findings from this wider survey of staff (n = 17) and students (n = 323) informed curricular innovations in teaching and learning that involved introduction of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and discussion boards in the institutional VLE as well as use of Facebook for specific student learning activity. The presentation will include a demonstration of how FAQs and Facebook have been utilised and report on initial staff and student evaluation of how these particular approaches to using technology enhance student learning.     Investigation of surface water behavior during glaze ice accretion

    A series of experimental investigations that focused on isolating the primary factors that control the behavior of unfrozen surface water during glaze ice accretion were conducted. Detailed microvideo observations were made of glaze ice accretions on 2.54 cm diam cylinders in a closed-loop refrigerated wind tunnel. Distinct zones of surface water behavior were observed; a smooth wet zone in the stagnation region with a uniform water film, a rough zone where surface tension effects caused coalescence of surface water into stationary beads, and a zone where surface water ran back as rivulets. The location of the transition from the smooth to the rough zone was found to migrate towards the stagnation point with time. Comparative tests were conducted to study the effect of the substrate thermal and roughness properties on ice accretion. The importance of surface water behavior was evaluated by the addition of a surface tension reducing agent to the icing tunnel water supply, which significantly altered the accreted glaze ice shape. Measurements were made to determine the contact angle behavior of water droplets on ice.     Use of cryogenic buoyancy systems for controlled removal of heavy objects from the seabed

    The concept design of a lightweight cryogenic marine heavy lift buoyancy system has been investigated. The approach makes use of a novel cryogenic system for provision of buoyancy within the ocean environment. The objective is to be able to lift or lower large displacement objects under full remote control. The nature of subsea lifting and lowering operations requires a high degree of precise control for operational safety, reasons and to preserve the structural integrity of the load. The lift operation occurs in two phases: Development of lift to overcome seabed suction, and then rapid reduction of buoyancy to maintain a controlled ascent. Descent involves controlled release of the buoyancy. The proposed buoyancy system consists of a buoyancy chamber and an integral cryogenic gas generation unit. The application of an on-board gas generation unit allows the removal of the engineering challenges associated with use of compressors and the concomitant complex manifold of connecting umbilical pipe work. It provides for a fully remote system completely eliminating all risk associated with extensive physical surface to subsea connection throughout the entire lift operation. The opening stages of the project work include the development of a system that will operate efficiently and effectively to a depth of 350m. An initial general arrangement for the buoyancy system has been developed. A number of these systems involve considerable design and development, these include: structural design of the buoyancy chamber, mechanical systems to control and connection to the lift device, the cryogenic system itself and overall process control systems. As part of the design process for such an arrangement, numerical simulation of the complete system has been undertaken in order to develop mechanical, cryogenic and process control systems efficiently and effectively. This system simulation has been developed using Matlab Simulink. This paper considers the overall design concept and associated system development issues. These are illustrated through use of the time accurate simulation of alternative design configurations that confirm the viability of the concept. A main conclusion is that minimisation of the dry weight of the system is critical to cost-effective operation of the project

    A comparison of sleep assessment tools by nurses and patients in critical care

    Aim The aim of this critical care sleep assessment pilot study was to evaluate the usefulness of three sleep assessment tools to identify which, if any, provided the closest comparison between the nurses’ judgement and the patients’ experience of their sleep. The study objectives were to: (i) compare patients' and nurses' assessment of sleep using three different rating tools. (ii) Ascertain patients’ preferences with non-interventional, user friendly, practical tools in critical care. (iii) Recommend changes and improvements to the way that sleep is assessed and documented. Background Sleep is important for promoting critical care recovery and sleep disturbance is known to cause irritability, aggression and increased stress levels. The availability and use of valid critical care sleep assessment tools is limited. Design A descriptive comparative study using three sleep assessment-rating scales were constructed to provide easy to understand tools for completion by both patients and nurses in critical care. Methods Structured interviews were undertaken with 82 patients and 82 nurses using a convenience sample from four multispecialty critical care units in one large teaching trust. Patients were included in the study if they met a list of pre-defined criteria to obtain responses from lucid orientated patients. Results No tool produced a close association between the nurses’ assessment of the patients sleep and the patients’ assessment of their sleep. Patients found two of the three tools easy to use when rating their sleep. Discussion Objective invasive measurements of sleep as well as complex subjective tools appear inappropriate to be used as a part of daily critical care practice. The application of simple rating scores has a high degree of error when nurses assess patients’ sleep, even though high levels of patient observation and assessment are practiced in critical care. Conclusions More research is needed to examine the assessment of sleep in critical care, particularly linking rating scales to alternative methods of physiological assessment of sleep. Findings indicate nurses are unable to accurately assess critical care patients’ sleep using rating assessment tools. However patients were found to prefer two sleep assessment tools, one banded in hours to assess sleep quantity and one as a comparison against normal sleep to assess sleep quality. Relevance to clinical practice This study reviews the importance of sleep assessment and the diverse methods available for assessing sleep focussing on the critically ill patient. More noteworthy it highlights how nurses sole judgements of patients sleep is not a reliable method in clinical practice, however it provides some indication on the application of ‘easy to use’ tools to assist in the patients assessments of their sleep
