Rotating nuclei at extreme conditions: Cranked Relativistic Mean Field Description

    Get PDF
The cranked relativistic mean field (CRMF) theory is applied for the description of superdeformed (SD) rotational bands observed in 153^{153}Ho. The question of the structure of the so-called SD band in 154^{154}Er is also addressed and a brief overview of applications of CRMF theory to the description of rotating nuclei at extreme conditions is presented.Comment: 4 pages, 1 PostScript figure, LaTex, uses 'espcrc1.sty', to be published in Proceedings of International Nuclear Physics Conference, Paris, 1998 which will appear in Nuclear Physic

Simultaneous laser vibrometry on multiple surfaces with a single beam system using range-resolved interferometry

    Get PDF
A novel range-resolved interferometric signal processing technique that uses sinusoidal optical frequency modulation is applied to multi-surface vibrometry, demonstrating simultaneous optical measurements of vibrations on two surfaces using a single, collimated laser beam, with a minimum permissible distance of 3.5 cm between surfaces. The current system, using a cost-effective laser diode and a fibre-coupled, downlead insensitive setup, allows an interferometric fringe rate of up to 180 kHz to be resolved with typical displacement noise levels of 8 pm Hz-0.5. In this paper, the system is applied to vibrometry measurements of a table-top cryostat, with concurrent measurements of the optical widow and the sample holder inside. This allows the separation of common-mode vibrations of the whole cryostat from differential vibrations between the window and the sample holder.EPSR

Onset of Rotational Damping in Superdeformed Nuclei

We discuss damping of the collective rotational motion in A150A\sim 150 superdeformed nuclei by means of a shell model combining the cranked Nilsson mean-filed and the surface-delta two-body residual force. It is shown that, because of the shell structure associated with the superdeformed mean-field, onset energy of the rotational damping becomes Ex23E_x \sim 2-3 MeV above yrast line, which is much higher than in normal deformed nuclei. The mechanism of the shell structure effect is investigated through detailed analysis of level densities in superdeformed nuclei. It is predicted the onset of damping varies in different supedeformed nuclei along with variation in the single-particle structure at the Fermi surface.Comment: 24 pages, latex, 14 figures (compressed and uuencoded

    Polarization Effects in Superdeformed Nuclei

    Get PDF
A detailed theoretical investigation of polarization effects in superdeformed nuclei is performed. In the pure harmonic oscillator potential it is shown that when one particle (or hole) with the mass single-particle quadrupole moment q_{nu} is added to a superdeformed core, the change of the electric quadrupole moment can be parameterized as q_{eff}=e(bq_{nu}+a), and analytical expressions are derived for the two parameters, aa and bb. Simple numerical expressions for q_{eff}(q_\nu}) are obtained in the more realistic modified oscillator model. It is also shown that quadrupole moments of nuclei with up to 10 particles removed from the superdeformed core of 152Dy can be well described by simply subtracting effective quadrupole moments of the active single-particle states from the quadrupole moment of the core. Tools are given for estimating the quadrupole moment for possible configurations in the superdeformed A 150-region.Comment: 28 pages including 9 figure

Barrier penetration and rotational damping of thermally excited superdeformed nuclei

We construct a microscopic model of thermally excited superdeformed states that describes both the barrier penetration mechanism, leading to the decay-out transitions to normal deformed states, and the rotational damping causing fragmentation of rotational E2 transitions. We describe the barrier penetration by means of a tunneling path in the two-dimensional deformation energy surface, which is calculated with the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. The individual excited superdeformed states and associated E2 transition strengths are calculated by the shell model diagonalization of the many-particle many-hole excitations interacting with the delta-type residual two-body force. The effect of the decay-out on the excited superdeformed states are discussed in detail for 152^{152}Dy, 143^{143}Eu and 192^{192}Hg.Comment: 33pages, 32 figures, submitted to Nucl.Phys.

'The difference in determinants of Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma genitalium in a sample of young Australian women.'

BACKGROUND Differences in the determinants of Chlamydia trachomatis ('chlamydia') and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) genital infection in women are not well understood. METHODS A cohort study of 16 to 25 year old Australian women recruited from primary health care clinics, aimed to determine chlamydia and MG prevalence and incidence. Vaginal swabs collected at recruitment were used to measure chlamydia and MG prevalence, organism-load and chlamydia-serovar a cross-sectional analysis undertaken on the baseline results is presented here. RESULTS Of 1116 participants, chlamydia prevalence was 4.9% (95% CI: 2.9, 7.0) (n = 55) and MG prevalence was 2.4% (95% CI: 1.5, 3.3) (n = 27). Differences in the determinants were found - chlamydia not MG, was associated with younger age [AOR:0.9 (95% CI: 0.8, 1.0)] and recent antibiotic use [AOR:0.4 (95% CI: 0.2, 1.0)], and MG not chlamydia was associated with symptoms [AOR:2.1 (95% CI: 1.1, 4.0)]. Having two or more partners in last 12 months was more strongly associated with chlamydia [AOR:6.4 (95% CI: 3.6, 11.3)] than MG [AOR:2.2 (95% CI: 1.0, 4.6)] but unprotected sex with three or more partners was less strongly associated with chlamydia [AOR:3.1 (95%CI: 1.0, 9.5)] than MG [AOR:16.6 (95%CI: 2.0, 138.0)]. Median organism load for MG was 100 times lower (5.7 × 104/swab) than chlamydia (5.6 × 10⁶/swab) (p < 0.01) and not associated with age or symptoms for chlamydia or MG. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate significant chlamydia and MG prevalence in Australian women, and suggest that the differences in strengths of association between numbers of sexual partners and unprotected sex and chlamydia and MG might be due to differences in the transmission dynamics between these infections. This project was funded by the Commonwealth of Australia, as part of a National Chlamydia Pilot program that is currently running to test the effectiveness of a number of models for chlamydia testing in Australia. This project will assist in developing possible recommendations for a National Chlamydia Program. The analysis of MG was funded by the National Health and Research Council (research grant number 509144)

Superdeformed Band in ^{36}Ar Described by Projected Shell Model

The projected shell model implements shell model configuration mixing in the projected deformed basis. Our analysis on the recently observed superdeformed band in 36^{36}Ar suggests that the neutron and proton 2-quasiparticle and the 4-quasiparticle bands cross the superdeformed ground band at the same angular momentum. This constitutes a picture of band disturbance in which the first and the second band-crossing, commonly seen at separate rotation frequencies in heavy nuclei, occur simultaneously. We also attempt to understand the assumptions of two previous theoretical calculations which interpreted this band. Electromagnetic properties of the band are predicted.Comment: 4 pages and 2 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. C as a Rapid Communicatio
