    Spin-Coupled Local Distortions in Multiferroic Hexagonal HoMnO3

    Local structural measurements have been performed on hexagonal HoMnO3 in order to ascertain the specific changes in bond distances which accompany magnetic ordering transitions. The transition from paramagnetic to the antiferromagetic (noncollinear) phase near ~70 K is dominated by changes in the a-b plane Mn-Mn bond distances. The spin rotation transition near ~40 K involves both Mn-Mn and nearest neighbor Ho-Mn interactions while the low temperature transition below 10 K involves all interactions, Mn-Mn, Ho-Mn (nearest and next nearest) and Ho-Ho correlations. These changes in bond distances reveal strong spin-lattice coupling. The similarity in magnitude of the change in J(Mn-Mn) and J(Ho-Mn) enhances the system frustration. The structural changes are interpreted in terms of a model of competing spin order and local structural distortions. Density functional calculations are used to estimate the energies associated with ionic displacements. The calculations also reveal asymmetric polarization of the charge density of Ho, O3 and O4 sites along the z-axis in the ferroelectric phase. This polarization facilitates coupling between Ho atoms on neighboring planes normal to the z-axis.Comment: 8 figure

    LSST optical beam simulator

    We describe a camera beam simulator for the LSST which is capable of illuminating a 60mm field at f/1.2 with realistic astronomical scenes, enabling studies of CCD astrometric and photometric performance. The goal is to fully simulate LSST observing, in order to characterize charge transport and other features in the thick fully depleted CCDs and to probe low level systematics under realistic conditions. The automated system simulates the centrally obscured LSST beam and sky scenes, including the spectral shape of the night sky. The doubly telecentric design uses a nearly unit magnification design consisting of a spherical mirror, three BK7 lenses, and one beam-splitter window. To achieve the relatively large field the beam-splitter window is used twice. The motivation for this LSST beam test facility was driven by the need to fully characterize a new generation of thick fully-depleted CCDs, and assess their suitability for the broad range of science which is planned for LSST. Due to the fast beam illumination and the thick silicon design [each pixel is 10 microns wide and over 100 microns deep] at long wavelengths there can be effects of photon transport and charge transport in the high purity silicon. The focal surface covers a field more than sufficient for a 40x40 mm LSST CCD. Delivered optical quality meets design goals, with 50% energy within a 5 micron circle.     Psychometric testing of a german version of the evaluation of daily activity questionnaire in rheumatoid arthritis

    Background: The Evaluation of Daily Activity Questionnaire (EDAQ) is a patient reported outcome (PRO) of activity limitations. The English EDAQ is reliable, valid and a comprehensive measure of the commonest problems experienced by people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and musculoskeletal conditions [1,2]. It includes 138 items in 14 ‘domains’ (Eating/ Drinking; Personal Care; Dressing; Bathing; Cooking; Moving Indoors; House Cleaning; Laundry; Moving and Transfers; Moving Outdoors; Gardening/Household Maintenance; Caring; Leisure/ Social Activities). All items are scored on a 0-3 scale (no difficulty to unable to do). There is no similar measure available in German. PROs must be tested in target languages and conditions, prior to use, to ensure validity and reliability. Objectives: To linguistically validate a German EDAQ and test it’s reliability and validity in German-speaking people with RA. Methods: The English EDAQ was forward-backward translated to German. Cognitive debriefing interviews were conducted and the German EDAQ developed. Participants from a Rheumatology clinic (Switzerland) and arthritis patient organizations (Switzerland, Germany, Austria) then completed postal questionnaires including: demographic questions, German EDAQ, Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), SF36v2, RA Quality of Life scale (RAQOL), and a hand pain numeric rating scale (NRS). Three weeks later, the EDAQ was mailed again. Test-retest reliability of domain scores, and validity of the 14 German EDAQ domains against the other measures, were evaluated using nonparametric correlations. Internal consistency was tested using Cronbach’s alpha. Results: Six German-speaking people with RA were interviewed, recommended changes reviewed by the expert panel and the German EDAQ agreed. 163 people then completed questionnaires: 145 women and 18 men; mean age = 52.84 (SD14.94) years; mean RA duration = 15.73 years (SD12.12). 85(45%) were employed; 21 had children &lt;18y at home. Median pain score = 4 (IQR 2-6) and fatigue = 5 (IQR 3-7). 107 (65%) completed a second questionnaire. Test-retest reliability of total domain scores was excellent for all domains (rs= 0.80 - 0.93). Internal consistency was high in all domains: Cronbach’s alpha= 0.84 – 0.96. All EDAQ domains (except Caring) correlated significantly (p&lt;0.001) with: HAQ rs= 0.73- 0.87; SF36v2 (Physical Function) rs= -0.61 to -0.84; SF36v2 Bodily Pain rs=-0.53 to -0.65; SF36v2 (Vitality) rs= -0.27 to-0.31; RAQOL rs= 0.55-0.68; and hand pain rs=0.43-0.52. Correlations were lower in the ‘Caring’ domain due to the smaller sample size (n=77), although mostly still significant (p&lt;0.01; rs=0.25 to 0.42; except Sf36v2 Vitality = -0.10 non- significant). Conclusions: The German EDAQ is a valid and reliable measure of daily activity in people with RA. Either the whole EDAQ or individual domains can be used in clinical practice to identify clients’ daily activity problems and help find solutions, or as an outcome measure in research and audit.     The LSST Data Mining Research Agenda

    We describe features of the LSST science database that are amenable to scientific data mining, object classification, outlier identification, anomaly detection, image quality assurance, and survey science validation. The data mining research agenda includes: scalability (at petabytes scales) of existing machine learning and data mining algorithms; development of grid-enabled parallel data mining algorithms; designing a robust system for brokering classifications from the LSST event pipeline (which may produce 10,000 or more event alerts per night); multi-resolution methods for exploration of petascale databases; indexing of multi-attribute multi-dimensional astronomical databases (beyond spatial indexing) for rapid querying of petabyte databases; and more.Comment: 5 pages, Presented at the "Classification and Discovery in Large Astronomical Surveys" meeting, Ringberg Castle, 14-17 October, 200

    Measurements and ab initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the High Temperature Ferroelectric Transition in Hexagonal RMnO3

    Measurements of the structure of hexagonal RMnO3 (R=rare earths (Ho) and Y) for temperatures significantly above the ferroelectric transition temperature (TFE) were conducted to determine the nature of the transition. The local and long range structural measurements were complemented by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. With respect to the Mn sites in YMnO3 and HoMnO3, we find no large atomic (bond distances or thermal factors), electronic structure changes or rehybridization on crossing TFE from local structural methods. The local symmetry about the Mn sites is preserved. With respect to the local structure about the Ho sites, a reduction of the average Ho-O bond with increased temperature is found. Ab initio molecular dynamics calculations on HoMnO3 reveal the detailed motions of all ions. Above ~900 K there are large displacements of the Ho, O3 and O4 ions along the z-axis which reduce the buckling of the MnO3/O4 planes. The changes result in O3/O4 ions moving to towards central points between pairs of Ho ions on the z-axis. These structural changes make the coordination of Ho sites more symmetric thus extinguishing the electric polarization. At significantly higher temperatures, rotation of the MnO5 polyhedra occurs without a significant change in electric polarization. The born effective charge tensor is found to be highly anisotropic at the O sites but does not change appreciably at high temperatures

    Inter-individual variation in nucleotide excision repair in young adults: effects of age, adiposity, micronutrient supplementation and genotype

    Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is responsible for repairing bulky helix-distorting DNA lesions and is essential for the maintenance of genomic integrity. Severe hereditary impairment of NER leads to cancers such as those in xeroderma pigmentosum, and more moderate reductions in NER capacity have been associated with an increased cancer risk. Diet is a proven modifier of cancer risk but few studies have investigated the potential relationships between diet and NER. In the present study, the plasmid-based host cell reactivation assay was used to measure the NER capacity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from fifty-seven volunteers aged 18–30 years before and after 6 weeks of supplementation with micronutrients (selenium and vitamins A, C and E). As a control, nine individuals remained unsupplemented over the same period. Volunteers were genotyped for the following polymorphisms in NER genes: ERCC5 Asp1104His (rs17655); XPC Lys939Gln (rs2228001); ERCC2 Lys751Gnl (rs13181); XPC PAT (an 83 bp poly A/T insertion–deletion polymorphism in the XPC gene). NER capacity varied 11-fold between individuals and was inversely associated with age and endogenous DNA strand breaks. For the first time, we observed an inverse association between adiposity and NER. No single polymorphism was associated with the NER capacity, although significant gene–gene interactions were observed between XPC Lys939Gln and ERCC5 Asp1104His and XPC Lys939Gln and ERCC2 Lys751Gnl. While there was no detectable effect of micronutrient supplementation on NER capacity, there was evidence that the effect of fruit intake on the NER capacity may be modulated by the ERCC2 Lys751Gnl single nucleotide polymorphism

    Behavioral implications of shortlisting procedures

    We consider two-stage “shortlisting procedures” in which the menu of alternatives is first pruned by some process or criterion and then a binary relation is maximized. Given a particular first-stage process, our main result supplies a necessary and sufficient condition for choice data to be consistent with a procedure in the designated class. This result applies to any class of procedures with a certain lattice structure, including the cases of “consideration filters,” “satisficing with salience effects,” and “rational shortlist methods.” The theory avoids background assumptions made for mathematical convenience; in this and other respects following Richter’s classical analysis of preference-maximizing choice in the absence of shortlisting
