Far-UV Spectroscopic Analyses of Four Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae
We analyze the Far-UV/UV spectra of four central stars of planetary nebulae
with strong wind features -- NGC 2371, Abell 78, IC 4776 and NGC 1535, and
derive their photospheric and wind parameters by modeling high-resolution FUSE
(Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) data in the Far-UV and HST-STIS and
IUE data in the UV with spherical non-LTE line-blanketed model atmospheres.
Abell 78 is a hydrogen-deficient transitional [WR]-PG 1159 object, and we find
NGC 2371 to be in the same stage, both migrating from the constant-luminosity
phase to the white dwarf cooling sequence with Teff ~= 120 kK, Mdot ~= 5x10^-8
Msun/yr. NGC 1535 is a ``hydrogen-rich'' O(H) CSPN, and the exact nature of IC
4776 is ambiguous, although it appears to be helium burning. Both objects lie
on the constant-luminosity branch of post-AGB evolution and have Teff ~= 65 kK,
Mdot ~= 1x10^-8 Msun/yr. Thus, both the H-rich and H-deficient channels of PN
evolution are represented in our sample. We also investigate the effects of
including higher ionization stages of iron (up to FeX) in the model atmosphere
calculations of these hot objects (usually neglected in previous analyses), and
find iron to be a useful diagnostic of the stellar parameters in some cases.
The Far-UV spectra of all four objects show evidence of hot (T ~ 300 K)

Transport properties of copper phthalocyanine based organic electronic devices
Ambipolar charge carrier transport in Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) is studied
experimentally in field-effect transistors and metal-insulator-semiconductor
diodes at various temperatures. The electronic structure and the transport
properties of CuPc attached to leads are calculated using density functional
theory and scattering theory at the non-equilibrium Green's function level. We
discuss, in particular, the electronic structure of CuPc molecules attached to
gold chains in different geometries to mimic the different experimental setups.
The combined experimental and theoretical analysis explains the dependence of
the mobilityand the transmission coefficient on the charge carrier type
(electrons or holes) and on the contact geometry. We demonstrate the
correspondence between our experimental results on thick films and our
theoretical studies of single molecule contacts. Preliminary results for

ISOGAL: A deep survey of the obscured inner Milky Way with ISO at 7 and 15 micron and with DENIS in the near-infrared
The ISOGAL project is an infrared survey of specific regions sampling the
Galactic Plane selected to provide information on Galactic structure,stellar
populations,stellar mass-loss and the recent star formation history of the
inner disk and Bulge of the Galaxy. ISOGAL combines 7 and 15 micron ISOCAM
observations - with a resolution of 6'' at worst - with DENIS IJKs data to
determine the nature of the sources and theinterstellar extinction. We have
observed about 16 square degrees with a sensitivity approaching 10-20mJy,
detecting ~10^5 sources,mostly AGB stars,red giants and young stars. The main
features of the ISOGAL survey and the observations are summarized in this
paper,together with a brief discussion of data processing and quality. The
primary ISOGAL products are described briefly (a full description is given in
Schuller et al. 2003, astro-ph/0304309): viz. the images and theISOGAL-DENIS
five-wavelength point source catalogue. The main scientific results already
derived or in progress are summarized. These include astrometrically calibrated
7 and 15um images,determining structures of resolved sources; identification
and properties of interstellar dark clouds; quantification of the infrared
extinction law and source dereddening; analysis of red giant and (especially)
AGB stellar populations in the central Bulge,determining luminosity,presence of
circumstellar dust and mass--loss rate,and source classification,supplemented
in some cases by ISO/CVF spectroscopy; detection of young stellar objects of
diverse types,especially in the inner Bulge with information about the present
and recent star formation rate; identification of foreground sources with
mid-IR excess. These results are the subject of about 25 refereed papers

ABO incompatibility: its impact on pregnancy and neonate
ABO incompatibility is one of the most common cause of haemolytic disease of fetus and new-born (HDFN). The expression of ABO incompatibility in most of the cases is mild due to the lower expression of A and B Antigens on fetal red cells. ABO incompatibility has affected the first pregnancy and is milder in the subsequent pregnancies. However, we describe this case with unusually severe form of ABO incompatibility which had an effect not only in her first pregnancy but also in all her subsequent pregnancies, evident as recurrent abortions and both her neonates developed pathological jaundice requiring exchange transfusion. It also emphasizes the fact that ABO incompatibility is not always a benign condition and should be considered in all babies whose mothers have O blood group, even in the presence of a negative DAT. Anticipation of ABO incompatibility not only in the first pregnancy but also in the subsequent pregnancies is necessary. Early diagnosis with cord blood bilirubin can prevent neonatal morbidity.
Induced pseudoscalar coupling of the proton weak interaction
The induced pseudoscalar coupling is the least well known of the weak
coupling constants of the proton's charged--current interaction. Its size is
dictated by chiral symmetry arguments, and its measurement represents an
important test of quantum chromodynamics at low energies. During the past
decade a large body of new data relevant to the coupling has been
accumulated. This data includes measurements of radiative and non radiative
muon capture on targets ranging from hydrogen and few--nucleon systems to
complex nuclei. Herein the authors review the theoretical underpinnings of
, the experimental studies of , and the procedures and uncertainties
in extracting the coupling from data. Current puzzles are highlighted and

Regularity Properties and Pathologies of Position-Space Renormalization-Group Transformations
We reconsider the conceptual foundations of the renormalization-group (RG)
formalism, and prove some rigorous theorems on the regularity properties and
possible pathologies of the RG map. Regarding regularity, we show that the RG
map, defined on a suitable space of interactions (= formal Hamiltonians), is
always single-valued and Lipschitz continuous on its domain of definition. This
rules out a recently proposed scenario for the RG description of first-order
phase transitions. On the pathological side, we make rigorous some arguments of
Griffiths, Pearce and Israel, and prove in several cases that the renormalized
measure is not a Gibbs measure for any reasonable interaction. This means that
the RG map is ill-defined, and that the conventional RG description of
first-order phase transitions is not universally valid. For decimation or
Kadanoff transformations applied to the Ising model in dimension ,
these pathologies occur in a full neighborhood of the low-temperature part of the first-order
phase-transition surface. For block-averaging transformations applied to the
Ising model in dimension , the pathologies occur at low temperatures
for arbitrary magnetic-field strength. Pathologies may also occur in the
critical region for Ising models in dimension . We discuss in detail
the distinction between Gibbsian and non-Gibbsian measures, and give a rather
complete catalogue of the known examples. Finally, we discuss the heuristic and

IR MPD CDF<SUB>3</SUB> in two-frequency IR fields
The effectiveness of various sets of laser frequencies was analyzed for two-frequency MPD of CDF3 molecule at the different pressures of buffer gas. It was shown that MPD yield increased compared to either single-frequency or two adjacent frequencies irradiation
HST/WFPC2 snapshot imaging of symbiotic stars
The results of a HST/WFPC2 snapshot imaging survey of selected symbiotic
stars in 1999/2000 are presented. Seven sources - HD 149427 (PC 11), PU Vul, RT
Ser, He2-104 (Southern Crab), V1329 Cyg (HBV 475), V417 Cen, AS 201 - were
observed in filters F218W (ultraviolet continuum), F502N ([OIII]lambda
4959,5007) and F656N (Halpha); an eighth source, RS Oph, was observed in F437N
([OIII]lambda 4363), F502N and F656N. The presence of extended emission was
detected in He2-104, V1329 Cyg and possibly HD 149427. In He2-104 we detected
the [OIII] and Halpha counterparts to the inner lobes found in [NII] by Corradi
et al. For V1329 Cyg, comparison with previously published HST/FOC results
indicates expanding ejecta which may be associated with an ejection event in
1982 (+/-2 years) at a velocity of 260 +/- 50 km/s in the plane of the sky and
at an assumed distance of 3.4kpc. We also present previously unpublished radio
images of HD 149427, which we have obtained from the archives of the Australia
Telescope Compact Array and which reveal the presence of extended emission at a
similar orientation to that of the possible optical extension. Finally we also
include HST/WFPC2 GO observations of AG Peg and detect possible extended
