Near-Threshold eta Meson Production in Proton-Proton Collisions

The production of eta mesons has been measured in the proton-proton interaction close to the reaction threshold using the COSY-11 internal facility at the cooler synchrotron COSY. Total cross sections were determined for eight different excess energies in the range from 0.5 MeV to 5.4 MeV. The energy dependence of the total cross section is well described by the available phase-space volume weighted by FSI factors for the proton-proton and proton-eta pairs.Comment: 9 pages, 1 table, 5 figure

The fate of Böhler's angle in conservatively-treated displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures

Purpose: Although the predictive value of Böhler's angle on outcome remains subject of debate, the initial angle at the time of trauma still guides treatment. Changes in Böhler's angle during follow-up are frequently reported following surgical treatment of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures (DIACF). The aim of the present study was to determine the changes in Böhler's angle as a measure of secondary fracture displacement following conservative management of DIACF. Methods: Thirty-eight patients with a total of 44 displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures treated conservatively with a minimum of two lateral radiographs during follow-up were analysed. Böhler's angle at different follow-up times was measured by three observers. The change in angle was compared with the angle at trauma, and influence of trauma mechanism and common calcaneal fracture classifications were determined. Results: The results showed a significant decline over time of the Böhler's angle in conservatively-treated patients of more than 11° on average at a mean follow-up of 29.2 weeks. This decrease was not related to gender, the initial angle, or the Essex-Lopresti or Sanders classification. A statistically significantly higher decrease was detected in high energetic trauma compared with low energetic trauma. Conclusion: The conservative treatment of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures is still a viable option, yet a significant secondary displacement in time should be taken into account, as reflected in a decrease of Böhler's angle of 11° up to one year following trauma

The COSY-11 collaboration has measured the total cross section for the pp --> pp eta-prime and pp --> pp eta reactions in the excess energy range from Q = 1.5 MeV to Q = 23.6 MeV and from Q = 0.5 MeV to Q = 5.4 MeV, respectively. Measurements have been performed with the total luminosity of 73 nb^(-1) for the pp --> pp eta reaction and 1360 nb^(-1) for the pp --> pp eta-prime one. Recent results are presented and discussed.Comment: Invited talk at 4th International Conference on Physics at Storage Rings (STORI 99), Bloomington, Indiana, USA, September 12-16, 199

Reducing ceiling effects in the Working Alliance Inventory-Rehabilitation Dutch Version

Purpose: To reduce ceiling effects on domain scores (Task, Goal, and Bond) of the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI)-Rehabilitation Dutch Version by changing response scales and using Visual Analogue Scales (VASs). Methods: Clients, who had at least three treatment sessions prior, randomly received one of the three versions of the WAI-Rehabilitation Dutch Version, using items with a balanced Likert scale, Positive-Packed Likert scale or VAS. Primary outcome was percentage of ceiling effects in total- and domain scores, secondary outcomes were construct validity and internal consistency of the three versions. Results: One hundred and seventy-six clients randomly received a set of questionnaires (one of the three versions of the WAI-Rehabilitation Dutch Version, Session Rating Scale (SRS) and Helping Alliance Questionnaire (HAQ)-II); 152 participants (mean age 51.5 ± 16.3, 106 women) returned the questionnaires. No ceiling effects were present in the total scores of all versions. Significantly fewer ceiling effects were found in the VAS-Version (Goal: 8.0%, Bond: 7.7%) compared to the original (Goal: 18.0%, Bond: 29.8%) and Positive-Packed Version (Goal: 27.1%, Bond: 29.8%). Spearman’s correlations between VAS-Version, SRS and HAQ-II ranged 0.747–0.845. Conclusions: Visual Analogue Scales effectively reduced ceiling effects on domain scores of the WAI-Rehabilitation Dutch Version, while maintaining validity.Implications for RehabilitationVisual Analogue Scales effectively reduced ceiling effects on domain scores of the Working Alliance Inventory-Rehabilitation Dutch Version, while maintaining construct validity. The Working Alliance Inventory version with Visual Analogue Scales can be used in rehabilitation.

Feasibility studies of the time-like proton electromagnetic form factor measurements with PANDA at FAIR

The possibility of measuring the proton electromagnetic form factors in the time-like region at FAIR with the \PANDA detector is discussed. Detailed simulations on signal efficiency for the annihilation of pˉ+p\bar p +p into a lepton pair as well as for the most important background channels have been performed. It is shown that precision measurements of the differential cross section of the reaction pˉ+pe++e\bar p +p \to e^++ e^- can be obtained in a wide angular and kinematical range. The individual determination of the moduli of the electric and magnetic proton form factors will be possible up to a value of momentum transfer squared of q214q^2\simeq 14 (GeV/c)2^2. The total pˉ+pe++e\bar p +p\to e^++e^- cross section will be measured up to q228q^2\simeq 28 (GeV/c)2^2. The results obtained from simulated events are compared to the existing data. Sensitivity to the two photons exchange mechanism is also investigated.Comment: 12 pages, 4 tables, 8 figures Revised, added details on simulations, 4 tables, 9 figure

    The Staudinger Ligation

    Get PDF
While the Staudinger reaction has first been described a hundred years ago in 1919, the ligation reaction became one of the most important and efficient bioconjugation techniques in the 1990s and this century. It holds the crucial characteristics for bioorthogonal chemistry: biocompatibility, selectivity, and a rapid and high-yielding turnover for a wide variety of applications. In the past years, it has been used especially in chemical biology for peptide/protein synthesis, posttranslational modifications, and DNA labeling. Furthermore, it can be used for cell-surface engineering, development of microarrays, and drug delivery systems. However, it is also possible to use the reaction in synthetic chemistry for general formation of amide bonds. In this review, the three major types, traceless and nontraceless Staudinger Ligation as well as the Staudinger phosphite reaction, are described in detail. We will further illustrate each reaction mechanism and describe characteristic substrates, intermediates, and products. In addition, not only its advantages but also stereochemical aspects, scope, and limitations, in particular side reactions, are discussed. Finally, the method is compared to other bioorthogonal labeling methods
