Efficient total energy calculations from self-energy models

    Get PDF
We propose a new method for calculating total energies of systems of interacting electrons, which requires little more computational resources than standard density-functional theories. The total energy is calculated within the framework of many-body perturbation theory by using an efficient model of the self-energy, that nevertheless retains the main features of the exact operator. The method shows promising performance when tested against quantum Monte Carlo results for the linear response of the homogeneous electron gas and structural properties of bulk silicon

BAFF- and TACI-Dependent Processing of BAFFR by ADAM Proteases Regulates the Survival of B Cells.

B cell activating factor (BAFF) provides B cells with essential survival signals. It binds to three receptors: BAFFR, TACI, and BCMA that are differentially expressed by B cell subsets. BAFFR is early expressed in circulating B cells and provides key signals for further maturation. Here, we report that highly regulated BAFFR processing events modulate BAFF responses. BAFFR processing is triggered by BAFF binding in B cells co-expressing TACI and it is executed by the metalloproteases ADAM10 and ADAM17. The degree of BAFF oligomerization, the expression of ADAM proteins in different B cell subsets, and the activation status of the cell determine the proteases involved in BAFFR processing. Inhibition of ADAM10 augments BAFF-dependent survival of primary human B cells, whereas inhibition of ADAM17 increases BAFFR expression levels on germinal center B cells. Therefore, BAFF-induced processing of BAFFR regulates BAFF-mediated B cell responses in a TACI-dependent manner

The cAMP response element modulator (CREM)α is a widely expressed transcriptional repressor that is important for the termination of the T cell immune response and contributes to the abnormal T cell function in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. We present evidence that APCs of Crem(−/−) mice express increased amounts of the costimulatory molecule CD86 and induce enhanced Ag-dependent and Ag-independent T cell proliferation. Similarly, human APCs in which CREMα was selectively suppressed expressed more CD86 on the surface membrane. CREMα was found to bind to the CD86 promoter and suppressed its activity. Transfer of APCs from Crem(−/−) mice into naive mice facilitated a significantly stronger contact dermatitis response compared with mice into which APCs from Crem(+/+) mice had been transferred. We conclude that CREMα is an important negative regulator of costimulation and APC-dependent T cell function both in vitro and in vivo

Arbitrary Choice of Basic Variables in Density Functional Theory. II. Illustrative Applications

    Get PDF
Our recent theory (Ref. 1) enables us to choose arbitrary quantities as the basic variables of the density functional theory. In this paper we apply it to several cases. In the case where the occupation matrix of localized orbitals is chosen as a basic variable, we can obtain the single-particle equation which is equivalent to that of the LDA+U method. The theory also leads to the Hartree-Fock-Kohn-Sham equation by letting the exchange energy be a basic variable. Furthermore, if the quantity associated with the density of states near the Fermi level is chosen as a basic variable, the resulting single-particle equation includes the additional potential which could mainly modify the energy-band structures near the Fermi level.Comment: 27 page

    Observation of the decay B0J/ψηB^0 \to J/\psi \eta

We report the first observation of B0J/ψηB^0 \to J/\psi \eta decay. These results are obtained from a data sample that contains 449 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs accumulated at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^+ e^- collider. We observe a signal with a significance of 8.1σ\sigma and obtain a branching fraction of (9.5 ±\pm 1.7 (stat) ±\pm 0.8 (syst))×106\times 10^{-6}.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submit to PRL (8 pages, 2 figures, ICHEP'06 Conference Paper
