Electrophysiological activation by masked primes: Independence of prime-related and target-related activities
Visual stimuli that are made invisible by metacontrast masking (primes) have a
marked influence on behavioral and psychophysiological measures such as reaction
time (RT) and the lateralized readiness potential (LRP). 4 experiments are
reported that shed light on the effects that masked primes have on the LRP.
Participants had a go-nogo task in which the prime was associated with 1 of 2
responses even if the target required participants to refrain from responding.
To analyze the electrophysiological responses, we computed the LRP and applied
an averaging method separating the activation due to the prime and the target.
The results demonstrated that (a) masked primes activate responses even in a
nogo situation, (b) this prime-related activation is independent of masking, (c)
and is also independent of whether prime and target require the same responses
(congruent condition) or different responses (incongruent condition)
Altered processing of food stimuli in adolescents with loss of control eating
Loss of control eating (LOC) constitutes a common eating pathology in childhood and adolescence. Models developed for adult patients stress a biased processing of food-related stimuli as an important maintaining factor. To our knowledge, however, no EEG study to date investigated the processing of visual food stimuli in children or adolescents with LOC. Adolescents with at least one self-reported episode of LOC in the last four weeks and a matched control group completed a modified Go/NoGo task, with a numerical target or non-target stimulus being presented on one side of the screen and an irrelevant high-calorie food or neutral stimulus being presented on the opposite side. Mean P3 amplitudes were analyzed. In Go trials, the LOC group’s mean P3 amplitudes were comparable irrespective of distractor category, while for NoGo trials, mean P3 amplitudes were significantly higher when the distractor was a high-calorie food stimulus. This pattern was reversed in the control group. Results are interpreted in light of Gray’s reinforcement sensitivity theory. They might reflect altered processes of behavioral inhibition in adolescents with LOC upon confrontation with visual food stimuli
Top-down contingent feature-specific orienting with and without awareness of the visual input
In the present article, the role of endogenous feature-specific orienting for
conscious and unconscious vision is reviewed. We start with an overview of
orienting. We proceed with a review of masking research, and the definition of
the criteria of experimental protocols that demonstrate endogenous and exogenous
orienting, respectively. Against this background of criteria, we assess studies
of unconscious orienting and come to the conclusion that so far studies of
unconscious orienting demonstrated endogenous feature-specific orienting. The
review closes with a discussion of the role of unconscious orienting in action
control
Evidence from d+Au measurements for final-state suppression of high hadrons in Au+Au collisions at RHIC
We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle
azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high
) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at =200 GeV.
The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled
p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar
to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong
suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high
previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state

Transverse momentum and collision energy dependence of high hadron suppression in Au+Au collisions at ultrarelativistic energies
We report high statistics measurements of inclusive charged hadron production
in Au+Au and p+p collisions at \sqrtsNN=200 GeV. A large, approximately
constant hadron suppression is observed in central Au+Au collisions for
5\lt\pT\lt12 GeV/c. The collision energy dependence of the yields and the
centrality and \pT dependence of the suppression provide stringent constraints
on theoretical models of suppression. Models incorporating initial-state gluon
saturation or partonic energy loss in dense matter are largely consistent with
observations. We observe no evidence of \pT-dependent suppression, which may be
expected from models incorporating jet attentuation in cold nuclear matter or

Charged-Particle Multiplicities in Charged-Current Neutrino-- and Anti-Neutrino--Nucleus Interactions
The CHORUS experiment, designed to search for
oscillations, consists of a nuclear emulsion target and electronic detectors.
In this paper, results on the production of charged particles in a small sample
of charged-current neutrino-- and anti-neutrino--nucleus interactions at high
energy are presented. For each event, the emission angle and the ionization
features of the charged particles produced in the interaction are recorded,
while the standard kinematic variables are reconstructed using the electronic
detectors. The average multiplicities for charged tracks, the pseudo-rapidity
distributions, the dispersion in the multiplicity of charged particles and the
KNO scaling are studied in different kinematical regions. A study of
quasi-elastic topologies performed for the first time in nuclear emulsions is
also reported. The results are presented in a form suitable for use in the
validation of Monte Carlo generators of neutrino--nucleus interactions.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure
Global Intermittency and Collapsing Turbulence in the Stratified Planetary Boundary Layer
Direct numerical simulation of the turbulent Ekman layer over a smooth wall is used to investigate bulk properties of a planetary boundary layer under stable stratification. Our simplified configuration depends on two non-dimensional parameters: a Richardson number characterizing the stratification and a Reynolds number characterizing the turbulence scale separation. This simplified configuration is sufficient to reproduce global intermittency, a turbulence collapse, and the decoupling of the surface from the outer region of the boundary layer. Global intermittency appears even in the absence of local perturbations at the surface; the only requirement is that large-scale structures several times wider than the boundary-layer height have enough space to develop. Analysis of the mean velocity, turbulence kinetic energy, and external intermittency is used to investigate the large-scale structures and corresponding differences between stably stratified Ekman flow and channel flow. Both configurations show a similar transition to the turbulence collapse, overshoot of turbulence kinetic energy, and spectral properties. Differences in the outer region resulting from the rotation of the system lead, however, to the generation of enstrophy in the non-turbulent patches of the Ekman flow. The coefficient of the stability correction function from Monin-Obukhov similarity theory is estimated as (Formula presented.) in agreement with atmospheric observations, theoretical considerations, and results from stably stratified channel flows. Our results demonstrate the applicability of this set-up to atmospheric problems despite the intermediate Reynolds number achieved in our simulations. © 2014 The Author(s)
Follow the sign! Top-down contingent attentional capture of masked arrow cues
Arrow cues and other overlearned spatial symbols automatically orient attention
according to their spatial meaning. This renders them similar to exogenous cues
that occur at stimulus location. Exogenous cues trigger shifts of attention even
when they are presented subliminally. Here, we investigate to what extent the
mechanisms underlying the orienting of attention by exogenous cues and by arrow
cues are comparable by analyzing the effects of visible and masked arrow cues on
attention. In Experiment 1, we presented arrow cues with overall 50% validity.
Visible cues, but not masked cues, lead to shifts of attention. In Experiment 2,
the arrow cues had an overall validity of 80%. Now both visible and masked
arrows lead to shifts of attention. This is in line with findings that
subliminal exogenous cues capture attention only in a top-down contingent
manner, that is, when the cues fit the observer’s intentions
