Over 850 people attend events in the library in March! The month of March was very hectic for the events’ staff in the library. Six events were run in a period of two weeks, resulting in over 850 guests attending these events. We are very grateful for the support of volunteers who stayed until late at night to assist with the ushering of guests and with the clearing up afterwards. All the events were fully attended. The highlights were the public lecture with Minister Gigaba and the book discussion with Judge Cameron, which attracted the biggest audiences. Law students had a bumper month because three of the events involved speakers from the legal fraternity: Baroness Scotland, Judge Cameron, and David Bilchitz . The student assistants from the law section of the library also had hands on experience of events in the library when they ushered guests into the venue during the Judge Cameron book discussion. They did a splendid job indeed considering that over 200 people attended that discussion. It is also our pride when we promote books written or edited by our own UJ staff. Prof David Bilchitz and Prof Ashwin Desai from different departments within UJ, promoted the books they edited with great success. Popular DJ Sbu breaks UJ Reads attendance records! More than 1500 students congregated to listen to their favourite radio presenter, DJ Sbu, during the UJ Reads week on all four UJ campuses. The Leadership 2020 book– The Beginning compiled by Sibusiso Leope, popularly known as DJ Sbu - was selected as the UJ Reads book for the second semester. Past attendance records for this project were between 200 and 300, with this one surpassing it with more than five times the normal figures. DJ Sbu is an Engineering Faculty Alumnus of the UJ who studied at DFC, and so it was a double honour for DFC Library to host him as an author and award winning role model to the students who attended the discussion. DJ Sbu graduated in 1996 in electrical engineering at the then TWR. His main message, which is also reflected in his book, is that young people need to stand up and follow their dreams. In doing so, they need to have guts, “Chutzpa” and confidence. He emphasised that the other ingredients for success are humility, knowledge, family orientation and providing solutions for societal challenges or problems. DJ Sbu - hosts the Sound Revival show on Metro FM and he appears on the most popular game show in the country, Friends Like These. He owns a number of businesses under the Blaque Gemini Group where he is the Co-founder and Executive Chairman. He is the Founder and Chairman of SLEF, the Sbusiso Leope Education Foundation which has given away 147 bursaries to pupils throughout 300 schools nationwide

The Library participated in various activities organised by the University for Mandela Day, including a visit to the Helen Joseph Hospital, to assist with cleaning the wards and feeding sick people. In addition, the four campus libraries held library specific activities to commemorate this special day. For APB/FADA Library, the celebration took an unusual turn when almost 100 students were treated to a free movie and popcorn in the library on Friday 18 July to celebrate the legacy of our iconic leader by watching “Long Walk to Freedom”, a movie showing the life of Nelson Mandela. Many have never had the opportunity to watch the movie before and appreciated the opportunity given to them by the library. APK Campus Library partnered with the Department of Information and Knowledge Management to commemorate Mandela Day by hosting Christo Brand in the newly built and beautiful “Deck at the Library” on Thursday 17 July. Christo Brand is the author of the book: Doing Life with Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend

Book discussion: children of a bitter Harvest: child labour in the Cape Winelands by Suzan Levine

The UJ Library cordially invites you to meet Susan Levine the author of CHILDREN OF A BITTER HARVEST: CHILD LABOUR IN THE CAPE WINELANDS The book is made up of over 100 interconnected short stories that document moments in the lives of children who worked in the heart of South Africa’s wine industry between 1998 and 2010. Susan Levine held a discussion at UJ Library based on her book Children of a Bitter Harvest: Child Labour in the Cape Wine Lands. Mr Abdul Bemath, Runner-up for best book index, welcomed the author and gave a brief background to the book. Prof Liz Gunner, UJ Dept of Anthropology, facilitated the book discussion with the author and general audience.
