    On Artifacts in Nonlinear Dynamics

    Nonlinear oscillations are of permanent interest in the field of dynamics of mechanical and mechatronical systems. There exist several well-known semi-analytical methods like Harmonic Balance, perturbation analysis or multiple scales for such problems. We reconsider in our presentation the method of Harmonic Balance but add some additional steps in order to avoid artifacts and get information about the stability. The classical method of Harmonic Balance is therefore added by an error criterion, which considers the neglected terms. Looking on this error for increasing ansatz orders, it can be decided whether a solution exists or is an artifact of the method. For the low error solutions, a stability analysis is performed. As example, an extended Duffing oscillator with additional nonlinear damping and excitation is considered showing regions of separated island solutions. Also a nonlinear piezo-beam energy harvesting system is investigated.     `Breaking and entering' of contracts as a matter of bargaining power and exclusivity clauses

    We analyze the effect of liquidated damage rules in exclusive contracts that are negotiated in a sequential bargaining process between one seller and two buyers with endogenous outside options. We show that assumptions on the distribution of bargaining power influence the size of the payment of damages and determine which contractual party benefits from including liquidated damage rules. Furthermore, we show that the effect of the payment of damages on the efficiency of the consummated deals depends on the possibility to sign more than one contract. Only if this is not possible, damage rules may prevent the breaking and entering of contracts and thus lead to inefficient deals in the market of corporate control, or allow for `naked' exclusion in the context of supplier contracts with externalities.sequential bargaining, bargaining power, outside option, liquidated damage rules, termination fees, exclusivity agreements

In this poster we describe how context information can be used to optimize the usage of resources in a computer network. By means of a mobile payment system we show how these optimization method can be applied

    On some aspects of the dynamic behavior of the softening Duffing oscillator under harmonic excitation

    The Duffing oscillator is probably the most popular example of a nonlinear oscillator in dynamics. Considering the case of softening Duffing oscillator with weak damping and harmonic excitation and performing standard methods like harmonic balance or perturbation analysis, zero mean solutions with large amplitudes are found for small excitation frequencies. These solutions produce a ”nose-like” curve in the amplitude–frequency diagram and merge with the inclining resonance curve for decreasing (but non-vanishing) damping. These results are presented without any additional discussion in several textbooks. The present paper discusses the accurateness of these solutions by introducing an error estimation in the harmonic balance method showing large errors. Performing a modified perturbation analysis leads to solutions with non-vanishing mean value, showing very small errors in the harmonic balance error analysis

    Cellular Probabilistic Automata - A Novel Method for Uncertainty Propagation

    We propose a novel density based numerical method for uncertainty propagation under certain partial differential equation dynamics. The main idea is to translate them into objects that we call cellular probabilistic automata and to evolve the latter. The translation is achieved by state discretization as in set oriented numerics and the use of the locality concept from cellular automata theory. We develop the method at the example of initial value uncertainties under deterministic dynamics and prove a consistency result. As an application we discuss arsenate transportation and adsorption in drinking water pipes and compare our results to Monte Carlo computations

    On Dynamics of G-Band Bright Points

    Various parameters describing the dynamics of G-band bright points (GBPs) were derived from G-band images, acquired by the Dutch Open Telescope (DOT), of a quiet region close to the disk center. Our study is based on four commonly used diagnostics (effective velocity, change in the effective velocity, change in the direction angle, and centrifugal acceleration) and two new ones (rate of motion and time lag between recurrence of GBPs). The results concerning the commonly used parameters are in agreement with previous studies for a comparable spatial and temporal resolution of the used data.To broaden our understanding of the dynamics of GBPs, two new parameters were defined: the real displacement between their appearance and disappearance (rate of motion) and the frequency of their recurrence at the same locations (time lag). Results for both new parameters indicate that the locations of different dynamical types of GBPs (stable/farther traveling or with short/long lifetimes) are bound to the locations of more stable and long-living magnetic field concentrations. Thus, the disappearance/reappearance of the tracked GBPs cannot be perceived as the disappearance/reappearance of their corresponding magnetic field concentrations
