The normalization of sibling violence: Does gender and personal experience of violence influence perceptions of physical assault against siblings?
Despite its pervasive and detrimental nature, sibling violence (SV) remains marginalized as a harmless and inconsequential form of familial aggression. The present study investigates the extent to which perceptions of SV differ from those of other types of interpersonal violence. A total of 605 respondents (197 males, 408 females) read one of four hypothetical physical assault scenarios that varied according to perpetrator–victim relationship type (i.e., sibling vs. dating partner vs. peer vs. stranger) before completing a series of 24 attribution items. Respondents also reported on their own experiences of interpersonal violence during childhood. Exploratory factor analysis reduced 23 attribution items to three internally reliable factors reflecting perceived assault severity, victim culpability, and victim resistance ratings. A 4 × 2 MANCOVA—controlling for respondent age—revealed several significant effects. Overall, males deemed the assault less severe and the victim more culpable than did females. In addition, the sibling assault was deemed less severe compared to assault on either a dating partner or a stranger, with the victim of SV rated just as culpable as the victim of dating, peer, or stranger-perpetrated violence. Finally, respondents with more (frequent) experiences of childhood SV victimization perceived the hypothetical SV assault as being less severe, and victim more culpable, than respondents with no SV victimization. Results are discussed in the context of SV normalization. Methodological limitations and applications for current findings are also outlined
Thermal to Nonthermal Energy Partition at the Early Rise Phase of Solar Flares
In some flares the thermal component appears much earlier than the nonthermal
component in X-ray range. Using sensitive microwave observations we revisit
this finding made by Battaglia et al. (2009) based on RHESSI data analysis. We
have found that nonthermal microwave emission produced by accelerated electrons
with energy of at least several hundred keV, appears as early as the thermal
soft X-ray emission indicative that the electron acceleration takes place at
the very early flare phase. The non-detection of the hard X-rays at that early
stage of the flares is, thus, an artifact of a limited RHESSI sensitivity. In
all considered events, the microwave emission intensity increases at the early
flare phase. We found that either thermal or nonthermal gyrosynchrotron
emission can dominate the low-frequency part of the microwave spectrum below
the spectral peak occurring at 3-10 GHz. In contrast, the high-frequency
optically thin part of the spectrum is always formed by the nonthermal,
accelerated electron component, whose power-law energy spectrum can extend up
to a few MeV at this early flare stage. This means that even though the total
number of accelerated electrons is small at this stage, their nonthermal
spectrum is fully developed. This implies that an acceleration process of
available seed particles is fully operational. While, creation of this seed
population (the process commonly called `injection' of the particles from the
thermal pool into acceleration) has a rather low efficiency at this stage,
although, the plasma heating efficiency is high. This imbalance between the
heating and acceleration (in favor of the heating) is difficult to reconcile
within most of available flare energization models. Being reminiscent of the
tradeoff between the Joule heating and runaway electron acceleration, it puts

Nonlinearity-induced conformational instability and dynamics of biopolymers
We propose a simple phenomenological model for describing the conformational
dynamics of biopolymers via the nonlinearity-induced buckling and collapse
(i.e. coiling up) instabilities. Taking into account the coupling between the
internal and mechanical degrees of freedom of a semiflexible biopolymer chain,
we show that self-trapped internal excitations (such as amide-I vibrations in
proteins, base-pair vibrations in DNA, or polarons in proteins) may produce the
buckling and collapse instabilities of an initially straight chain. These
instabilities remain latent in a straight infinitely long chain, because the
bending of such a chain would require an infinite energy. However, they
manifest themselves as soon as we consider more realistic cases and take into
account a finite length of the chain. In this case the nonlinear localized
modes may act as drivers giving impetus to the conformational dynamics of
biopolymers. The buckling instability is responsible, in particular, for the
large-amplitude localized bending waves which accompany the nonlinear modes
propagating along the chain. In the case of the collapse instability, the chain
folds into a compact three-dimensional coil. The viscous damping of the aqueous
environment only slows down the folding of the chain, but does not stop it even
for a large damping. We find that these effects are only weakly affected by the
peculiarities of the interaction potentials, and thus they should be generic
for different models of semiflexible chains carrying nonlinear localized

The role of microtubule movement in bidirectional organelle transport
We study the role of microtubule movement in bidirectional organelle
transport in Drosophila S2 cells and show that EGFP-tagged peroxisomes in cells
serve as sensitive probes of motor induced, noisy cytoskeletal motions.
Multiple peroxisomes move in unison over large time windows and show
correlations with microtubule tip positions, indicating rapid microtubule
fluctuations in the longitudinal direction. We report the first high-resolution
measurement of longitudinal microtubule fluctuations performed by tracing such
pairs of co-moving peroxisomes. The resulting picture shows that
motor-dependent longitudinal microtubule oscillations contribute significantly
to cargo movement along microtubules. Thus, contrary to the conventional view,
organelle transport cannot be described solely in terms of cargo movement along
stationary microtubule tracks, but instead includes a strong contribution from

Randomized controlled trial of traditional Chinese medicine (acupuncture and Tuina) in cerebral palsy: Part 1 - Any increase in seizure in integrated acupuncture and rehabilitation group versus rehabilitation group?
Objective: The objective of this study was to observe for any change in baseline seizure frequency with acupuncture in children with cerebral palsy. Methods: A randomized controlled study was conducted: Group I consisted of integrated acupuncture, tuina, and rehabilitation (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and hydrotherapy) for 12 weeks; and Group II consisted of rehabilitation (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and hydrotherapy) for 12 weeks. After a washout period of 4 weeks, Group II then received acupuncture and tuina for 12 weeks. Each subject received 5 daily acupuncture sessions per week for 12 weeks (total = 60 sessions). All children were assessed for any change in seizure frequency during treatment. Results: One hundred and sixteen (116) children were recruited and randomized into Group I (N = 58) and Group II (N = 58). Thirty-three (33) children withdrew (9 from Group I and 24 from Group II). Of the remaining 83 children, Group I consisted of 49 and Group II of 34 children. For baseline, 5 children (6%; 5/83) had seizures. During phase 1 (12 weeks) of integrative treatment and subsequent 4-week follow-up, 3 children in Group I had seizures. Among those 3 children with seizures, 1 child with prior history of recurrent febrile seizure had 3 more recurrent febrile seizures during acupuncture treatment and 2 children without any prior history of seizures had new-onset seizures (1 with 3 recurrent febrile seizures and 1 with afebrile seizure). For Group I, 2 children with epilepsy had no increase in seizure frequency during acupuncture treatment. For Group II during the phase 2 acupuncture period, none had increase in seizure frequency. In both groups, 4 of 5 children (80%; 2 in Group I and 2 in Group II) with seizures had no increase in seizure frequency during acupuncture treatment and follow-up. Probing microscopic origins of confined subdiffusion by first-passage observables
Subdiffusive motion of tracer particles in complex crowded environments, such
as biological cells, has been shown to be widepsread. This deviation from
brownian motion is usually characterized by a sublinear time dependence of the
mean square displacement (MSD). However, subdiffusive behavior can stem from
different microscopic scenarios, which can not be identified solely by the MSD
data. In this paper we present a theoretical framework which permits to
calculate analytically first-passage observables (mean first-passage times,
splitting probabilities and occupation times distributions) in disordered media
in any dimensions. This analysis is applied to two representative microscopic
models of subdiffusion: continuous-time random walks with heavy tailed waiting
times, and diffusion on fractals. Our results show that first-passage
observables provide tools to unambiguously discriminate between the two
possible microscopic scenarios of subdiffusion. Moreover we suggest experiments
based on first-passage observables which could help in determining the origin
of subdiffusion in complex media such as living cells, and discuss the

Rewriting Logic Semantics of a Plan Execution Language
The Plan Execution Interchange Language (PLEXIL) is a synchronous language
developed by NASA to support autonomous spacecraft operations. In this paper,
we propose a rewriting logic semantics of PLEXIL in Maude, a high-performance
logical engine. The rewriting logic semantics is by itself a formal interpreter
of the language and can be used as a semantic benchmark for the implementation
of PLEXIL executives. The implementation in Maude has the additional benefit of
making available to PLEXIL designers and developers all the formal analysis and
verification tools provided by Maude. The formalization of the PLEXIL semantics
in rewriting logic poses an interesting challenge due to the synchronous nature
of the language and the prioritized rules defining its semantics. To overcome
this difficulty, we propose a general procedure for simulating synchronous set
relations in rewriting logic that is sound and, for deterministic relations,
complete. We also report on two issues at the design level of the original
PLEXIL semantics that were identified with the help of the executable
specification in Maude
Technical assistance, neo-colonialism or mutual trade? The experience of an Anglo/Ukrainian/Russian social work practice learning project
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union there has been a steady stream of Western consultants ready to work in Eastern Europe and Russia and share professional and academic expertise and experience. Social work, unknown as a discrete discipline or profession in the Soviet Union, has been a growth area with funding from a variety of sources to help promote East-West partnerships.Social work theory and practice emphasises critical appraisal of policy and embraces issues of power, discrimination and oppression. Social work educators should therefore be especially alert to the complex ethical questions which these kinds of collaborations raise, and adept at finding practical solutions or workable compromises. This article explores these ethical and political issues with reference to a project to develop social work practice learning in a Russian oblast' (region). The project was an ambitious partnership of British, Ukrainian and Russian educators, involving numerous Russian social work and related agencies, and four Russian universities and colleges in one oblast'. The authors use a series of vignettes to help the reader achieve insights into these East-West transactions. The article concludes with a discussion of different interpretations of these dealings, using three prisms: technical assistance, neo-colonialism and mutual trade
Measurement of Sibling Violence: A Two-Factor Model of Severity
The measurement of violence is a major challenge in aggression research. Because of the heterogeneous nature of violent behavior, problems arise when applying blanket measures to inherently distinct subtypes of aggression. Incidents of intersibling violence (ISV) exacerbate these problems because siblinghood represents a unique offender–victim situation. This research explored whether an existing two-factor model for severe violence found in a sample of 250 adult offenders (age M = 26.8, SD = 5.9) could be generalized to deliberate severe ISV in a sample of 111 young offenders (age M = 14.83, SD = 1.45). Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor model encompassing severe ISV perpetration with weapon use (Factor 1) and severe ISV perpetration without weapon use (Factor 2). The results provide strong empirical support for the two-factor model of violence severity previously established with adult offenders. This analysis demonstrates construct validity of the severity measures among the different types of offenders studied and provides support for generalization across populations
Tension Dynamics and Linear Viscoelastic Behavior of a Single Semiflexible Polymer Chain
We study the dynamical response of a single semiflexible polymer chain based
on the theory developed by Hallatschek et al. for the wormlike-chain model. The
linear viscoelastic response under oscillatory forces acting at the two chain
ends is derived analytically as a function of the oscillation frequency . We
shall show that the real part of the complex compliance in the low frequency
limit is consistent with the static result of Marko and Siggia whereas the
imaginary part exhibits the power-law dependence +1/2. On the other hand, these
compliances decrease as the power law -7/8 for the high frequency limit. These
are different from those of the Rouse dynamics. A scaling argument is developed
