Performance of laminar-flow leading-edge test articles in cloud encounters
An extensive data bank of concurrent measurements of laminar flow (LF), particle concentration, and aircraft charging state was gathered for the first time. From this data bank, 13 flights in the simulated airline service (SAS) portion were analyzed to date. A total of 6.86 hours of data at one-second resolution were analyzed. An extensive statistical analysis, for both leading-edge test articles, shows that there is a significant effect of cloud and haze particles on the extent of laminar flow obtained. Approximately 93 percent of data points simulating LFC flight were obtained in clear air conditions; approximately 7 percent were obtained in cloud and haze. These percentages are consistent with earlier USAF and NASA estimates and results. The Hall laminar flow loss criteria was verified qualitatively. Larger particles and higher particle concentrations have a more marked effect on LF than do small particles. A particle spectrometer of a charging patch are both acceptable as diagnostic indicators of the presence of particles detrimental to laminar flow
Regenerable biocide delivery unit
A method and apparatus are disclosed for maintaining continuous, long-term microbial control in the water supply for potable, hygiene, and experimental water for space activities, as well as treatment of water supplies on Earth. The water purification is accomplished by introduction of molecular iodine into the water supply to impart a desired iodine residual. The water is passed through an iodinated anion exchange resin bed. The iodine is bound as I-(sub n) at the anion exchange sites and releases I(sub 2) into the water stream flowing through the bed. The concentration of I(sub 2) in the flowing water gradually decreases and, in the prior art, the ion-exchange bed has had to be replaced. In a preferred embodiment, a bed of iodine crystals is provided with connections for flowing water therethrough to produce a concentrated (substantially saturated) aqueous iodine solution which is passed through the iodinated resin bed to recharge the bed with bound iodine. The bed of iodine crystals is connected in parallel with the iodinated resin bed and is activated periodically (e.g., by timer, by measured flow of water, or by iodine residual level) to recharge the bed. Novelty resides in the capability of inexpensively and repeatedly regenerating the ion-exchange bed in situ
The Ability of Various Measures of Fatness to Predict Application for Disability Insurance
This paper compares a variety of measures of fatness (e.g. BMI, waist circumference, waist-tohip ratio, percent body fat) in terms of their ability to predict application for Social Security Disability Insurance (DI). This is possible through a recent linkage of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III to Social Security Administration (SSA) administrative records. Our results indicate that the measure of fatness that best predicts application for DI varies by race and gender. For white men, BMI consistently predicts future application for DI. For white women, almost all are consistently predictive. For black men, none predict application. For black women, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio are the only significant predictors of DI application. This variation across race and gender suggests that the inclusion of alternative measures of fatness in social science datasets should be considered, and that researchers examining the impact of fatness on social science outcomes should examine the robustness of their findings to alternative measures of fatness.
Operational considerations for laminar flow aircraft
Considerable progress has been made in the development of laminar flow technology for commercial transports during the NASA Aircraft Energy Efficiency (ACEE) laminar flow program. Practical, operational laminar flow control (LFC) systems have been designed, fabricated, and are undergoing flight testing. New materials, fabrication methods, analysis techniques, and design concepts were developed and show much promise. The laminar flow control systems now being flight tested on the NASA Jetstar aircraft are complemented by natural laminar flow flight tests to be accomplished with the F-14 variable-sweep transition flight experiment. Wilson Loops and Area-Preserving Diffeomorphisms in Twisted Noncommutative Gauge Theory
We use twist deformation techniques to analyse the behaviour under
area-preserving diffeomorphisms of quantum averages of Wilson loops in
Yang-Mills theory on the noncommutative plane. We find that while the classical
gauge theory is manifestly twist covariant, the holonomy operators break the
quantum implementation of the twisted symmetry in the usual formal definition
of the twisted quantum field theory. These results are deduced by analysing
general criteria which guarantee twist invariance of noncommutative quantum
field theories. From this a number of general results are also obtained, such
as the twisted symplectic invariance of noncommutative scalar quantum field
theories with polynomial interactions and the existence of a large class of
holonomy operators with both twisted gauge covariance and twisted symplectic

Non-Geometric Fluxes, Quasi-Hopf Twist Deformations and Nonassociative Quantum Mechanics
We analyse the symmetries underlying nonassociative deformations of geometry
in non-geometric R-flux compactifications which arise via T-duality from closed
strings with constant geometric fluxes. Starting from the non-abelian Lie
algebra of translations and Bopp shifts in phase space, together with a
suitable cochain twist, we construct the quasi-Hopf algebra of symmetries that
deforms the algebra of functions and the exterior differential calculus in the
phase space description of nonassociative R-space. In this setting
nonassociativity is characterised by the associator 3-cocycle which controls
non-coassociativity of the quasi-Hopf algebra. We use abelian 2-cocycle twists
to construct maps between the dynamical nonassociative star product and a
family of associative star products parametrized by constant momentum surfaces
in phase space. We define a suitable integration on these nonassociative spaces
and find that the usual cyclicity of associative noncommutative deformations is
replaced by weaker notions of 2-cyclicity and 3-cyclicity. Using this star
product quantization on phase space together with 3-cyclicity, we formulate a
consistent version of nonassociative quantum mechanics, in which we calculate
the expectation values of area and volume operators, and find coarse-graining

GUT-Scale Primordial Black Holes: Consequences and Constraints
A population of very light primordial black holes which evaporate before
nucleosynthesis begins is unconstrained unless the decaying black holes leave
stable relics. We show that gravitons Hawking radiated from these black holes
would source a substantial stochastic background of high frequency
gravititational waves ( Hz or more) in the present universe. These
black holes may lead to a transient period of matter dominated expansion. In
this case the primordial universe could be temporarily dominated by large
clusters of "Hawking stars" and the resulting gravitational wave spectrum is

Functional compartmentalization of Rad9 and Hus1 reveals diverse assembly of the 9-1-1 complex components during the DNA damage response in Leishmania
The Rad9-Rad1-Hus1 (9-1-1) complex is a key component in the coordination of DNA damage sensing, cell cycle progression and DNA repair pathways in eukaryotic cells. This PCNA-related trimer is loaded onto RPA-coated single stranded DNA and interacts with ATR kinase to mediate effective checkpoint signaling to halt the cell cycle and to promote DNA repair. Beyond these core activities, mounting evidence suggests that a broader range of functions can be provided by 9-1-1 structural diversification. The protozoan parasite Leishmania is an early-branching eukaryote with a remarkably plastic genome, which hints at peculiar genome maintenance mechanisms. Here, we investigated the existence of homologs of the 9-1-1 complex subunits in L. major and found that LmRad9 and LmRad1 associate with chromatin in response to replication stress and form a complex in vivo with LmHus1. Similar to LmHus1, LmRad9 participates in telomere homeostasis and in the response to both replication stress and double strand breaks. However, LmRad9 and LmHus1-deficient cells present markedly opposite phenotypes, which suggest their functional compartmentalization. We show that some of the cellular pool of LmRad9 forms an alternative complex and that some of LmHus1 exists as a monomer. We propose that the diverse assembly of the Leishmania 9-1-1 subunits mediates functional compartmentalization, which has a direct impact on the response to genotoxic stress
