Odorants for surveillance and control of the Asian Citrus Psyllid (Diaphorina citri).
BackgroundThe Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, can transmit the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter while feeding on citrus flush shoots. This bacterium causes Huanglongbing (HLB), a major disease of citrus cultivation worldwide necessitating the development of new tools for ACP surveillance and control. The olfactory system of ACP is sensitive to variety of odorants released by citrus plants and offers an opportunity to develop new attractants and repellents.ResultsIn this study, we performed single-unit electrophysiology to identify odorants that are strong activators, inhibitors, and prolonged activators of ACP odorant receptor neurons (ORNs). We identified a suite of odorants that activated the ORNs with high specificity and sensitivity, which may be useful in eliciting behavior such as attraction. In separate experiments, we also identified odorants that evoked prolonged ORN responses and antagonistic odorants able to suppress neuronal responses to activators, both of which can be useful in lowering attraction to hosts. In field trials, we tested the electrophysiologically identified activating odorants and identified a 3-odor blend that enhances trap catches by ∼230%.ConclusionThese findings provide a set of odorants that can be used to develop affordable and safe odor-based surveillance and masking strategies for this dangerous pest insect
Hydrodynamic fluctuations in relativistic superfluids
The Hamiltonian formulation of superfluids based on noncanonical Poisson
brackets is studied in detail. The assumption that the momentum density is
proportional to the flow of the conserved energy is shown to lead to the
covariant relativistic theory previously suggested by Khalatnikov, Lebedev and
Carter, and some potentials in this theory are given explicitly. We discuss
hydrodynamic fluctuations in the presence of dissipative effects and we derive
the corresponding set of hydrodynamic correlation functions. Kubo relations for

Large thermomagnetic effects in weakly disordered Heisenberg chains
The interplay of different scattering mechanisms can lead to novel effects in
transport. We show theoretically that the interplay of weak impurity and
Umklapp scattering in spin-1/2 chains leads to a pronounced dip in the magnetic
field dependence of the thermal conductivity at a magnetic field . In sufficiently clean samples, the reduction of the magnetic
contribution to heat transport can easily become larger than 50% and the effect
is predicted to exist even in samples with a large exchange coupling, J >> B,
where the field-induced magnetization is small. Qualitatively, our theory might
explain dips at observed in recent heat transport measurements on
copper pyrazine dinitrate, but a fully quantitative description is not possible

Langevin equation with scale-dependent noise
A new wavelet based technique for the perturbative solution of the Langevin
equation is proposed. It is shown that for the random force acting in a limited
band of scales the proposed method directly leads to a finite result with no
renormalization required. The one-loop contribution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang

Evidence for glutamate-mediated excitotoxic mechanisms during photoreceptor degeneration in the rd1 mouse retina
PURPOSE: Kinetic studies of photoreceptor cell death in the retinal degeneration (rd1) mouse model suggest that photoreceptor degeneration could result from cumulative damage. Since alterations in glutamate metabolism have been described in different models of retinitis pigmentosa, we investigated in the present work whether changes in glutamate turnover occur in the degenerating rd1 retina and whether glutamate-mediated excitotoxic mechanisms may contribute to rod photoreceptor death in this model. METHODS: Free amino acid levels were quantified in rd1 and wild-type retinas using an amino acid analyzer selecting times corresponding to early, intermediate, and terminal phases of rod photoreceptor degeneration. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to compare the mRNA expression levels of the glial L-glutamate/L-aspartate transporter GLAST, glutamine synthetase (GS), and vimentin, a marker for retinal glia, between rd1 and wild-type mouse retinas. 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (CNQX), an antagonist of both AMPA and kainate subtypes of ionotropic glutamate receptors, was then daily administered from postnatal day 3 (PN3) to PN21 to rd1 mice while control rd1 mice received only physiological saline solution (7 per treatment). Maser Source Finding Methods in HOPS
The {\bf H}{\bf O} Southern Galactic {\bf P}lane {\bf S}urvey (HOPS) has
observed 100 square degrees of the Galactic plane, using the Mopra radio
telescope to search for emission from multiple spectral lines in the 12\,mm
band (19.5\,--\,27.5\,GHz). Perhaps the most important of these spectral lines
is the 22.2\,GHz water maser transition. We describe the methods used to
identify water maser candidates and subsequent confirmation of the sources. Our
methods involve a simple determination of likely candidates by searching peak
emission maps, utilising the intrinsic nature of water maser emission -
spatially unresolved and spectrally narrow-lined. We estimate completeness
limits and compare our method with results from the {\sc Duchamp} source
finder. We find that the two methods perform similarly. We conclude that the
similarity in performance is due to the intrinsic limitation of the noise
characteristics of the data. The advantages of our method are that it is
slightly more efficient in eliminating spurious detections and is simple to
implement. The disadvantage is that it is a manual method of finding sources
and so is not practical on datasets much larger than HOPS, or for datasets with
extended emission that needs to be characterised. We outline a two-stage method

On the contrasting spin dynamics of , and near half filling
We present simple calculations which show that incommensurability upon doping
and the width of the magnetically ordered phase in Mott-Hubbard insulators
depend strongly on the location of the hole/electron pockets in the Brillouin
zone. For systems, we found the pockets at ,
in which case the corrections to the antiferromagnetic spin stiffness grow with
doping and destroy the commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering already at a
very small doping. On the other hand, in , the hole pockets are
located at and the symmetry related points, in which case the
corrections to the stiffness scale linearly with the density of carriers and do
not destroy commensurate spin ordering. For , systems the situation is
less certain, but our results favor hole pockets at . We also

Spin Pumping of Current in Non-Uniform Conducting Magnets
Using irreversible thermodynamics we show that current-induced spin transfer
torque within a magnetic domain implies spin pumping of current within that
domain. This has experimental implications for samples both with conducting
leads and that are electrically isolated. These results are obtained by
deriving the dynamical equations for two models of non-uniform conducting
magnets: (1) a generic conducting magnet, with net conduction electron density
n and net magnetization ; and (2) a two-band magnet, with up and down
spins each providing conduction and magnetism. For both models, in regions
where the equilibrium magnetization is non-uniform, voltage gradients can drive
adiabatic and non-adiabatic bulk spin torques. Onsager relations then ensure
that magnetic torques likewise drive adiabatic and non-adiabatic currents --
what we call bulk spin pumping. For a given amount of adiabatic and
non-adiabatic spin torque, the two models yield similar but distinct results
for the bulk spin pumping, thus distinguishing the two models. As in the recent
spin-Berry phase study by Barnes and Maekawa, we find that within a domain wall
the ratio of the effective emf to the magnetic field is approximately given by
, where P is the spin polarization. The adiabatic spin torque

State-Dependent and -Independent Effects of Dialyzing Excitatory Neuromodulator Receptor Antagonists into the Ventral Respiratory Column
Unilateral dialysis of the broad-spectrum muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine (50 mM) into the ventral respiratory column [(VRC) including the pre-Bötzinger complex region] of awake goats increased pulmonary ventilation (V̇i) and breathing frequency (f), conceivably due to local compensatory increases in serotonin (5-HT) and substance P (SP) measured in effluent mock cerebral spinal fluid (mCSF). In contrast, unilateral dialysis of a triple cocktail of antagonists to muscarinic (atropine; 5 mM), neurokinin-1, and 5-HT receptors does not alter V̇i or f, but increases local SP. Herein, we tested hypotheses that 1) local compensatory 5-HT and SP responses to 50 mM atropine dialyzed into the VRC of goats will not differ between anesthetized and awake states; and 2) bilateral dialysis of the triple cocktail of antagonists into the VRC of awake goats will not alter V̇i or f, but will increase local excitatory neuromodulators. Through microtubules implanted into the VRC of goats, probes were inserted to dialyze mCSF alone (time control), 50 mM atropine, or the triple cocktail of antagonists. We found 1) equivalent increases in local 5-HT and SP with 50 mM atropine dialysis during wakefulness compared with isoflurane anesthesia, but V̇i and f only increased while awake; and 2) dialyses of the triple cocktail of antagonists increased V̇i, f, 5-HT, and SP
