IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS IN SCOPUS JOURNALS FOR LECTURERS AND STUDENTS
The community service activity with the title "Improving the Quality of Research and Publication in the Scopus Journal for Lecturers and Students" aims to improve the ability of lecturers and students to produce quality scientific works, especially for publication in Scopus-indexed international journals. In today's academic context, publication in international journals is becoming increasingly important, so appropriate support is needed to overcome various challenges faced in the research and writing process of articles. The method applied in this program is a collaborative approach, which includes interactive workshops and direct mentoring by lecturers. Presentation sessions were also organized to share research findings, providing opportunities for participants to learn from each other. The results of this activity showed a significant increase in participants' understanding of research techniques and how to write good scientific articles. In addition, the program has successfully formed collaborative groups between students and lecturers, which creates high motivation to continue research. The evaluation of participants showed satisfaction with the implementation of the program and expectations to continue similar activities in the future. This activity concludes that the mentoring program not only improves the quality of research but also creates a positive research culture in the academic environment. This is very important for the development of science and the reputation of higher education institutions
DEVELOPMENT OF NUMERACY QUESTIONS BASED ON LOCAL WISDOM OF SOUTH MINAHASA
Direct observations of the effect of fine sediment deposition on the vertical movement of Gammarus pulex (Amphipoda: Gammaridae) during substratum drying
Benthic macroinvertebrates inhabit the streambed sediments of temporary streams during drying events. Fine sediment (< 2 mm in diameter) deposition and clogging of interstitial pathways reduces the connectivity between benthic and subsurface habitats, potentially inhibiting macroinvertebrate vertical movements. Direct observations within subsurface sediments are, however, inherently difficult. As a result, confirmation of macroinvertebrate vertical movement, and the effect of fine sediment, is limited. We used laboratory mesocosms containing transparent gravel sized particles (10–15 mm) to facilitate the direct observation and tracking of vertical movements by Gammarus pulex in response to water level reduction and sedimentation. Seven sediment treatments comprised two fine sediment fractions (small: 0.125–0.5 mm, coarse sand: 0.5–1 mm) deposited onto the surface of the substrate, and a control treatment where no fine sediment was applied. We found that G. pulex moved into the subsurface gravel sediments in response to drying, but their ability to remain submerged during water level reduction was impeded by fine sediment deposition. In particular deposition of the coarser sand fraction clogged the sediment surface, limiting vertical movements. Our results highlight the potential effect of sedimentation on G. pulex resistance to drying events in streams
Perceived discrimination based on the symptoms of covid-19, mental health, and emotional responses–the international online COVISTRESS survey
Background
Despite the potential detrimental consequences for individuals’ health and discrimination from covid-19 symptoms, the outcomes have received little attention. This study examines the relationships between having personally experienced discrimination based on the symptoms of covid-19 (during the first wave of the pandemic), mental health, and emotional responses (anger and sadness). It was predicted that covid-19 discrimination would be positively related to poor mental health and that this relationship would be mediated by the emotions of anger and sadness.
Methods
The study was conducted using an online questionnaire from January to June 2020 (the Covistress network; including 44 countries). Participants were extracted from the COVISTRESS database (Ntotal = 280) with about a half declaring having been discriminated due to covid-19 symptoms (N = 135). Discriminated participants were compared to non-discriminated participants using ANOVA. A mediation analysis was conducted to examine the indirect effect of emotional responses and the relationships between perceived discrimination and self-reported mental health.
Results
The results indicated that individuals who experienced discrimination based on the symptoms of covid-19 had poorer mental health and experienced more anger and sadness. The relationship between covid-19 personal discrimination and mental health disappeared when the emotions of anger and sadness were statistically controlled for. The indirect effects for both anger and sadness were statistically significant.
Discussion
This study suggests that the covid-19 pandemic may have generated discriminatory behaviors toward those suspected of having symptoms and that this is related to poorer mental health via anger and sadness.publishedVersio
