Differential Operators for Edge Detection
We present several results characterizing two differential operators used for edge detection: the Laplacian and the second directional derivative along the gradient. In particular, (a)we give conditions for coincidence of the zeros of the two operators, and (b) we show that the second derivative along the gradient has the same zeros of the normal curvature in the gradient direction.
Biological implications are also discussed. An experiment is suggested to test which of the two operators may be used by the human visual system.MIT Artificial Intelligence Laborator
EPR before EPR: a 1930 Einstein-Bohr thought experiment revisited
In 1930 Einstein argued against consistency of the time-energy uncertainty
relation by discussing a thought experiment involving a measurement of mass of
the box which emitted a photon. Bohr seemingly triumphed over Einstein by
arguing that the Einstein's own general theory of relativity saves the
consistency of quantum mechanics. We revisit this thought experiment from a
modern point of view at a level suitable for undergraduate readership and find
that neither Einstein nor Bohr was right. Instead, this thought experiment
should be thought of as an early example of a system demonstrating nonlocal
"EPR" quantum correlations, five years before the famous

El presente artículo estudia el contexto legal y administrativo
de uno de los fondos de pensiones de beneficio definido políticamente más
relevantes en México, la Dirección de Pensiones Civiles del Estado de Michoacán.
Como consecuencia de esto, se hace la propuesta de una política, estructura
y proceso de gestión activa de carteras para su reserva técnica. Para probar la
pertinencia de la propuesta, se realizó una simulación de eventos discretos
con tres tipos de matrices de covarianzas, empleando el modelo Markowitz-
Tobin-Sharpe-Lintner. Los resultados demuestran que se superan los objetivos
actuariales planteados y se logra incrementar, como consecuencia, el periodo
de suficiencia financiera del plan de pensiones
Functional assessment of cancer therapy questionnaire for breast cancer (FACT-B+4): Italian version validation
BACKGROUND:
Improvements in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment led to an increased incidence of survivors' rate. The healthcare system has to face new problems related not only to the treatment of the disease, but also to the management of the quality of life after the diagnosis. The aim of this study was to validate the Italian version of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - Breast (FACT-B+4) questionnaire and to evaluate its reliability.
METHODS:
The questionnaire was administered twice, with an interval of three days between each administration, to a cohort of women of the Breast Surgical Unit, PoliclincoUmberto I. Cronbach's alpha was used as a measure of the internal consistency of the Italian version.
RESULTS:
The Italian version of the tool was administered to 55 subjects. The Cronbach's alpha for most scores registered values >0.7, both at baseline and at the follow-up analysis, therefore the subscale showed good internal consistency.
CONCLUSIONS:
The Italian version of FACT-B+4 demonstrated acceptable reliability properties in the Breast Unit patients. The use of this questionnaire seemed to be effective and in line with the results derived from the English and Spanishversions. Internal consistency and validity had similar performance results
Internal Time Formalism for Spacetimes with Two Killing Vectors
The Hamiltonian structure of spacetimes with two commuting Killing vector
fields is analyzed for the purpose of addressing the various problems of time
that arise in canonical gravity. Two specific models are considered: (i)
cylindrically symmetric spacetimes, and (ii) toroidally symmetric spacetimes,
which respectively involve open and closed universe boundary conditions. For
each model canonical variables which can be used to identify points of space
and instants of time, {\it i.e.}, internally defined spacetime coordinates, are
identified. To do this it is necessary to extend the usual ADM phase space by a
finite number of degrees of freedom. Canonical transformations are exhibited
that identify each of these models with harmonic maps in the parametrized field
theory formalism. The identifications made between the gravitational models and
harmonic map field theories are completely gauge invariant, that is, no
coordinate conditions are needed. The degree to which the problems of time are

Transport in strongly-coupled graphene-LaAlO3/SrTiO3 hybrid systems
We report on the transport properties of hybrid devices obtained by
depositing graphene on a LaAlO3/SrTiO3 oxide junction hosting a 4 nm-deep
two-dimensional electron system. At low graphene-oxide inter-layer bias the two
electron systems are electrically isolated, despite their small spatial
separation, and very efficient reciprocal gating is shown. A pronounced
rectifying behavior is observed for larger bias values and ascribed to the
interplay between electrostatic depletion and tunneling across the LaAlO3
barrier. The relevance of these results in the context of strongly-coupled

The synergistic effect between positivity, socio-demographic factors and smoking cessation: results of a cohort study
OBJECTIVE: To examine the extent to which a effect does exist between Positivity (POS), smoking and socio-demographic factors in determining quitting smoking in subjects participating in a Group Counselling Program (GCP) for smoking cessation.METHODS: 481 subjects were contacted through a telephone call. A logistic regression analysis was carried out. Possible interaction between sociodemographic variables and POS level was tested using the Synergism Index (SI).RESULTS: For individuals with a POS level over or equal to 3.4 the odds of being smoker was significantly higher among females (OR = 1.55), who smoked at home (OR = 2.16) and lower if there had children at home (OR = 0.53). For individuals with a POS level under 3.4, the only significant variable associated with smoking was beinga female (OR = 2.58). As far concerns the synergistic effect between the variables considered does exist between POS levels and having children at home (SI=1.13) and female gender (SI = 2.8).CONCLUSIONS: The synergistic effect between POS and sociodemographic factors adds evidence on the use of POS as possible determinants of individual happiness
Manipulation of single-photon states encoded in transverse spatial modes: possible and impossible tasks
Controlled generation and manipulation of photon states encoded in their
spatial degrees of freedom is a crucial ingredient in many quantum information
tasks exploiting higher-than-two dimensional encoding. Here, we prove the
impossibility to arbitrarily modify -level state superpositions (quits)
for , encoded in the transverse modes of light, with optical components
associated to the group of symplectic transforms (Gaussian operations).
Surprisingly, we also provide an explicit construction of how non-Gaussian
operations acting on mode subspaces do enable to overcome the limit . In
addition, this set of operations realizes the full SU(3) algebra.Comment: Published in PR
A Kucha\v{r} Hypertime Formalism For Cylindrically Symmetric Spacetimes With Interacting Scalar Fields
The Kucha\v{r} canonical transformation for vacuum geometrodynamics in the
presence of cylindrical symmetry is applied to a general non-vacuum case. The
resulting constraints are highly non-linear and non-local in the momenta
conjugate to the Kucha\v{r} embedding variables. However, it is demonstrated
that the constraints can be solved for these momenta and thus the dynamics of
cylindrically symmetric models can be cast in a form suitable for the

Quantum diffusion on a cyclic one dimensional lattice
The quantum diffusion of a particle in an initially localized state on a
cyclic lattice with N sites is studied. Diffusion and reconstruction time are
calculated. Strong differences are found for even or odd number of sites and
the limit N->infinit is studied. The predictions of the model could be tested
