    Effect of Customized Nutrient Mixture on Yield of Okra in Onattukara Sandy Plain

    A study was conducted in the Onattukara sandy plain (AEU 3) of Kerala to assess the available nutrient status of the region to develop a multi nutrient mixture for balanced crop nutrition and to evaluate the effect of multi nutrient mixture on growth and yield of okra. Two hundred georeferenced soil samples were drawn at random from twenty soil series of the Onattukara region and analysed for 13 soil fertility parameters. The soil was very strongly acidic with high level of phosphorus, low oxidisable organic carbon and available potassium and wide spread deficiencies of calcium, magnesium, boron and zinc. Micronutrient fertilizer requirement was computed based on the available micronutrient status of the region and crop requirement. A multi nutrient mixture having a composition of Zn (9.5%) + B (2.6%) +Cu (1.2%) +Mg (2.4%) +N (0.46%) @ 20kg ha-1 was developed and the effect of multi nutrient mixture was assessed in the field experiments using okra variety Varsha Uphar as the test crop. Application of soil test based NPK and secondary nutrients + foliar application of 0.5 per cent solution of computed dose of nutrient mixture @ 5 kg ha-1 in two splits at 15 DAS and 30 DAS (T7) yielded significantly higher (11.3 t ha-1) over rest of the treatments with a B: C ratio of 3.02. Soil status of micronutrients in the experiment site before the experiment was Zn (0.27 mg kg-1), Cu (0.21 mg kg-1) and B (0.17 mg kg-1). After two consecutive applications of multi nutrient mixture, the soil status of Zn, Cu and B were in the range of 0.62 to 1.58 mg kg-1, 0.74 to 0.99 mg kg-1 and 0.19 to 0.31 mg kg-1 respectively. In general the highest nutrient content and uptake in shoot and fruit were recorded by T7. Application of multi nutrient mixtures customized for agro ecological units and crops ensured increased yield and sustained soil health

    The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of lutein- and zeaxanthin-rich foods and supplements on macular pigment level (MPL) and serological markers of endothelial activation, inflammation and oxidation in healthy volunteers. We conducted two 8-week intervention studies. Study 1 (n 52) subjects were randomised to receive either carrot juice (a carotene-rich food) or spinach powder (a lutein- and zeaxanthin-rich food) for 8 weeks. Study 2 subjects (n 75) received supplements containing lutein and zeaxanthin, β-carotene, or placebo for 8 weeks in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. MPL, serum concentrations of lipid-soluble antioxidants, inter-cellular adhesion molecule 1, vascular cell adhesion molecule 1, C-reactive protein and F2-isoprostane levels were assessed at baseline and post-intervention in both studies. In these intervention studies, no effects on MPL or markers of endothelial activation, inflammation or oxidation were observed. However, the change in serum lutein and zeaxanthin was associated or tended to be associated with the change in MPL in those receiving lutein- and zeaxanthin-rich foods (lutein r 0·40, P = 0·05; zeaxanthin r 0·30, P = 0·14) or the lutein and zeaxanthin supplement (lutein r 0·43, P = 0·03; zeaxanthin r 0·22, P = 0·28). In both studies, the change in MPL was associated with baseline MPL (food study r − 0·54, P &lt; 0·001; supplement study r − 0·40, P &lt; 0·001). We conclude that this 8-week supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin, whether as foods or as supplements, had no significant effect on MPL or serological markers of endothelial activation, inflammation and oxidation in healthy volunteers, but may improve MPL in the highest serum responders and in those with initially low MPL.</jats:p

    Inundation mapping – a study based on December 2004 Tsunami Hazard along Chennai coast, Southeast India

    Tsunami impact study has been undertaken along Chennai coast starting from Pulicat to Kovalam. The study area Chennai coast is mainly devoted to prepare large scale action plan maps on tsunami inundation incorporating land use details derived from satellite data along with cadastral data using a GIS tool. Under tsunami inundation mapping along Chennai coast an integrated approach was adopted to prepare thematic maps on land use/land cover and coastal geomorphology using multispectral remote sensing data. The RTK dGPS instruments are used to collect elevation contour data at 0.5 m intervals for the Chennai coast. The GIS tool has been used to incorporate the elevation data, tsunami inundation markings obtained immediately after tsunami and thematic maps derived from remote sensing data. The outcome of this study provides an important clue on variations in tsunami inundation along Chennai coast, which is mainly controlled by local geomorphologic set-up, coastal zone elevation including coastal erosion protection measures and near shore bathymetry. This study highlights the information regarding most vulnerable areas of tsunami and also provides indication to demarcate suitable sites for rehabilitation

    Dynamic Limits on Planar Libration-Orbit Coupling Around an Oblate Primary

    This paper explores the dynamic properties of the planar system of an ellipsoidal satellite in an equatorial orbit about an oblate primary. In particular, we investigate the conditions for which the satellite is bound in librational motion or when the satellite will circulate with respect to the primary. We find the existence of stable equilibrium points about which the satellite can librate, and explore both the linearized and non-linear dynamics around these points. Absolute bounds are placed on the phase space of the libration-orbit coupling through the use of zero-velocity curves that exist in the system. These zero-velocity curves are used to derive a sufficient condition for when the satellite's libration is bound to less than 90 degrees. When this condition is not satisfied so that circulation of the satellite is possible, the initial conditions at zero libration angle are determined which lead to circulation of the satellite. Exact analytical conditions for circulation and the maximum libration angle are derived for the case of a small satellite in orbits of any eccentricity.Comment: Submitted to Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronom

    We predict the existence of a new defect-lattice phase near the nematic - smectic-C (NC) transition. This tilt- analogue of the blue phase is a lattice of double-tilt cylinders. We discuss the structure and stability of the cone phase.     A double-blind study to determine the maximum tolerated dose of ethionamide, when administered twice-weekly to patients with pulmonary tuberculosis

    ATI earlier report from this Centre (Tuber-culosis Chemotherapy Centre, Madras, 1964) showed that a fully supervised twice-weekly regimen of streptomycin plus high-dosage isoniazid was highly effective in the treatment of patients with newly-diagnosed bacteriologi-cally confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis. How-ever, this regimen involves intramuscular injections of streptomycin and may not always be easy to organize, especially in rural areas and in developing countries with limited resources. For this reason, it was decided to investigate the possibility of replacing strepto-mycin in the twice-weekly regimen by two oral drugs, namely ethionamide and PAS. Ethiona-mide was chosen since, apart from isoniazid and streptomycin, it was the most potent drug available at the time, and PAS was included with a view to enhance the efficacy of the regimen. Finally, it was decided that the patients should be given an intensive phase of daily treatment with streptomycin, PAS and isoniazid for two weeks. Experiments in the guinea-pig had shown that the size of the individual dose of a drug needed to be increased as the interval between successive doses was increased (Dickinson & Mitchison, 1966). As PAS is bulky and the dosage of isoniazid in the twice-weekly regimen was already high, namely 15 mg./kg. body-weight, it was decided to explore the possibility of increasing the dosage of ethionamide to a level higher than that usually employed (0.5— 1.0 g.) in daily regimens. An investigation was therefore undertaken to determine the maximum tolerated dose of ethionamide. when administered twice-weekly together with isonia-zid plus PAS. Since the assessment of ethio-namide intolerance is largely subjective, the study was conducted ‘double-blind’ with respect to the dosage of ethionamide

    Non-Markovian dynamics for an open two-level system without rotating wave approximation: Indivisibility versus backflow of information

    By use of the two measures presented recently, the indivisibility and the backflow of information, we study the non-Markovianity of the dynamics for a two-level system interacting with a zero-temperature structured environment without using rotating wave approximation (RWA). In the limit of weak coupling between the system and the reservoir, and by expanding the time-convolutionless (TCL) generator to the forth order with respect to the coupling strength, the time-local non-Markovian master equation for the reduced state of the system is derived. Under the secular approximation, the exact analytic solution is obtained and the sufficient and necessary conditions for the indivisibility and the backflow of information for the system dynamics are presented. In the more general case, we investigate numerically the properties of the two measures for the case of Lorentzian reservoir. Our results show the importance of the counter-rotating terms to the short-time-scale non-Markovian behavior of the system dynamics, further expose the relations between the two measures and their rationality as non-Markovian measures. Finally, the complete positivity of the dynamics of the considered system is discussed
