Cost index (CI) and take-off mass (TOM) estimation using machine learning algorithms

    Get PDF
The Cost Index (CI) and Take-off Mass (TOM) are two parameters that are very important in order to study the preferences on airlines operation. In the same way, these two parameters would allow to predict ground-based trajectories accurately. Nowadays, unfortunately, this information is not shared by the airlines, because this information is confidential as they help to define market strategies of the airline. The objective of this final degree project is to develop and evaluate an algorithm able to estimate CI and TOM from data of a flight trajectory, that could be collected by a conventional antenna (i.e. radar data or ADS-B), by using Machine Learning algorithms. The algorithm should be trained with data from the PEP (Performance Program Airbus). The data will be shaped by thousands of trajectories generated with different ranges of distances, TOM, CI and atmospheric conditions in order to establish the input training data for Machine Learning. Once the algorithm has been generated, to ensure its robustness, it will be tested with data containing noise where the influence of the parameters in the prediction would be evaluated. Finally, it will be validated with new aircraft trajectories from PEP. The ultimate goal of the final degree project is to check and perform the study with real flight data. To realize this, radar data will be obtained from the DDR2 platform of Eurocontrol. With some flights trajectories, we will study the values of CI and TOM used by several airlines with the Machine Learning algorithm previously trained. In conclusion, it has been demonstrated that for CI the most relevant input variable is the Mach Number because it is the most visible evidence given to the time-fuel cost relation. On the other hand, TOM is more related to the distance of the flight and flight levels (FL). When the prediction algorithm is applied to real cases flights, we observed that low-cost airlines and flag carriers use different strategies of CI. Even so, a single airline usually use the same CI for most of their routes, wasting the opportunity to optimize the costs of the route and all the advantages offered by the CI

Evaluation of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) gels as drug delivery systems at different pH values

    Get PDF
Studies of dynamic and equilibrium swelling, structural characterisation and solute transport in swollen poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) gels (pHEMA) cross-linked with tripropyleneglycol diacrylate (TPGDA) were done for a wide range of TPGDA concentrations. The influence of the pH on these pHEMA properties was evaluated. In swelling studies it was found that in changing the pH from 6.5 to 12.0, a large increase in swelling occurred, from approximately 48 to 55%, for the lowest concentration of TPGDA (1 mol%), and from 40 to 80% for the highest concentration (10mol%). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements were made after the equilibrium swelling of the gels at different pH values, to explain these results. The advantage of using these gels as controlled drug delivery systems is illustrated using salicylic acid (SA) as a model drug. The loading and the release of the SA were made at different pH values and the results obtained showed that it is possible to modulate the hydrogel performance by controlling an external factor, the pH at which the drug loading and release were performed.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6T7W-3YMW350-4/1/bd1b81f7d9f216abf72881a42ad0163

Une approche formelle pour la génération d'analyseurs de langages naturels

    Get PDF

    On-line assessment of comprehension processes

    Get PDF
In this paper we describe a new version of a former paper-and-pencil standardized comprehension test called Test of Comprehension Processes (Vidal-Abarca, Gilabert, Martínez, & Sellés, 2007). The new version has been adapted to a computer-based environment based on the moving window technique. It can be used to assess comprehension strategies of students from fifth to tenth grades (11 to 16 years old). Comprehension strategies are registered on-line using reading times and visits to relevant sections of the text during the question-answering process. Data show that the computerbased version draws similar results to those provided by the paper-and-pencil version. In addition, we identify the particular strategies deployed during the question-answering process by high, medium and low [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]

Strong coupling between weakly guided semiconductor nanowire modes and an organic dye

    Get PDF
The light-matter coupling between electromagnetic modes guided by a semiconductor nanowire and excitonic states of molecules localized in its surrounding media is studied from both classical and quantum perspectives, with the aim of describing the strong-coupling regime. Weakly guided modes (bare photonic modes) are found through a classical analysis, identifying those lowest-order modes presenting large electromagnetic fields spreading outside the nanowire while preserving their robust guided behavior. Experimental fits of the dielectric permittivity of an organic dye that exhibits excitonic states are used for realistic scenarios. A quantum model properly confirms through an avoided mode crossing that the strong-coupling regime can be achieved for this configuration, leading to Rabi splitting values above 100 meV. In addition, it is shown that the coupling strength depends on the fraction of energy spread outside the nanowire, rather than on the mode field localization. These results open up a new avenue towards strong-coupling phenomenology involving propagating modes in nonabsorbing media. The authors acknowledge the Spanish Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad for financial support through Grants No. MAT2014-53432-C5-5-R, No. FIS2015-69295-C3-2-P, and No. FIS2017-91413-EXP; the María de Maeztu program for Units of Excellence in R&D (MDM-2014-0377); and an FPU Fellowship (D.R.A.) and a Ramón y Cajal grant (J.F.). Unravelling the genetic basis of simplex Retinitis Pigmentosa cases

    Get PDF
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is the most common form of inherited retinal dystrophy (IRD) characterized ultimately by photoreceptors degeneration. Exhibiting great clinical and genetic heterogeneity, RP can be inherited as an autosomal dominant (ad), autosomal recessive (ar) and X-linked (xl) disorder. Although the relative prevalence of each form varies somewhat between populations, a major proportion (41% in Spain) of patients represent simplex cases (sRP) in which the mode of inheritance is unknown. Molecular genetic diagnostic is crucial, but also challenging, for sRP patients because any of the 81 RP genes identified to date may be causative. Herein, we report the use of a customized targeted gene panel consisting of 68 IRD genes for the molecular characterization of 106 sRP cases. The diagnostic rate was 62.26% (66 of 106) with a proportion of clinical refinements of 30.3%, demonstrating the high efficiency of this genomic approach even for clinically ambiguous cases. The high number of patients diagnosed here has allowed us to study in detail the genetic basis of the sRP. The solved sRP cohort is composed of 62.1% of arRP cases, 24.2% of adRP and 13.6% of xlRP, which implies consequences for counselling of patients and families.Union Europea PI15-01648España Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad PI11-02923Junta de Andalucía,Ministerio de Economía, Innovación, Ciencia y Empleo CTS-166
