High resolution UVES/VLT spectra of white dwarfs observed for the ESO SN Ia Progenitor Survey III. DA white dwarfs

The ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY) took high-resolution spectra of more than 1000 white dwarfs and pre-white dwarfs. About two thirds of the stars observed are hydrogen-dominated DA white dwarfs. Here we present a catalog and detailed spectroscopic analysis of the DA stars in the SPY. Aims. Atmospheric parameters effective temperature and surface gravity are determined for normal DAs. Double-degenerate binaries, DAs with magnetic fields or dM companions, are classified and discussed. Methods. The spectra are compared with theoretical model atmospheres using a fitting technique. Results. Our final sample contains 615 DAs, which show only hydrogen features in their spectra, although some are double-degenerate binaries. 187 are new detections or classifications. We also find 10 magnetic DAs (4 new) and 46 DA+dM pairs (10 new).Peer reviewe
Measuring the electrical impedance of mouse brain tissue
We report on an experimental method to measure conductivity of cortical tissue. We use a pair of 5mm diameter Ag/AgCl electrodes in a Perspex sandwich device that can be brought to a distance of 400 microns apart. The apparatus is brought to uniform temperature before use. Electrical impedance of a sample is measured across the frequency range 20 Hz-2.0 MHz with an Agilent 4980A four-point impedance monitor in a shielded room. The equipment has been used to measure the conductivity of mature mouse brain cortex in vitro. Slices 400 microns in thickness are prepared on a vibratome. Slices are bathed in artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACSF) to keep them alive. Slices are removed from the ACSF and sections of cortical tissue approximately 2 mm times 2 mm are cut with a razor blade. The sections are photographed through a calibrated microscope to allow identification of their cross-sectional areas. Excess ACSF is removed from the sample and the sections places between the electrodes. The impedance is measured across the frequency range and electrical conductivity calculated. Results show two regions of dispersion. A low frequency region is evident below approximately 10 kHz, and a high frequency dispersion above this. Results at the higher frequencies show a good fit to the Cole-Cole model of impedance of biological tissue; this model consists of resistive and non-linear capacitive elements. Physically, these elements are likely to arise due to membrane polarization and migration of ions both intra- and extra-cellularly.http://www.iupab2014.org/assets/IUPAB/NewFolder/iupab-abstracts.pd
Benchmarking best manufacturing practices: a study into four sectors of Turkish industry
Reports on a benchmarking study conducted to quantify how well companies operating in various sectors of Turkish industry match up to best practice, both in the practices they adopt and in the operational outcomes that result, and to test the hypothesis that the closer a company is to best practice, the more likely it is for that company to achieve higher business performance. The survey conducted in 1997 and 1998 included 82 companies from the Turkish electronics, cement, automotive sectors and part and component suppliers to the appliance industry. For data gathering. employs the Competitive Strategies and Best Practices Benchmarking Questionnaire, supported ly, some follow-up interviews and one-day site visits. Classifies two small groups of companies as leaders and laggers, depending on how close they were to best practice. Shows that the leaders have performed better than the laggers in adopting best manufacturing practices and in the achievement of high performance La,els. The leaders also have achieved substantially higher business performance than the laggers. Furthermore, observes that large-sized companies outperform the rest both in terms of their success in implementing best manufacturing practices and in achieving high operational outcomes and that there is no appreciable difference between industrial sectors in implementing best manufacturing practices and in achieving high operational outcomes
Linear and nonlinear time series analysis of the black hole candidate Cygnus X-1
We analyze the variability in the X-ray lightcurves of the black hole
candidate Cygnus X-1 by linear and nonlinear time series analysis methods.
While a linear model describes the over-all second order properties of the
observed data well, surrogate data analysis reveals a significant deviation
from linearity. We discuss the relation between shot noise models usually
applied to analyze these data and linear stochastic autoregressive models. We
debate statistical and interpretational issues of surrogate data testing for
the present context. Finally, we suggest a combination of tools from linear
andnonlinear time series analysis methods as a procedure to test the

A continuum model for the dynamics of the phase transition from slow-wave sleep to REM sleep
Previous studies have shown that activated cortical states (awake and rapid eye-movement (REM) sleep), are associated with increased cholinergic input into the cerebral cortex. However, the mechanisms that underlie the detailed dynamics of the cortical transition from slow-wave to REM sleep have not been quantitatively modeled. How does the sequence of abrupt changes in the cortical dynamics (as detected in the electrocorticogram) result from the more gradual change in subcortical cholinergic input? We compare the output from a continuum model of cortical neuronal dynamics with experimentally-derived rat electrocorticogram data. The output from the computer model was consistent with experimental observations. In slow-wave sleep, 0.5–2-Hz oscillations arise from the cortex jumping between “up” and “down” states on the stationary-state manifold. As cholinergic input increases, the upper state undergoes a bifurcation to an 8-Hz oscillation. The coexistence of both oscillations is similar to that found in the intermediate stage of sleep of the rat. Further cholinergic input moves the trajectory to a point where the lower part of the manifold in not available, and thus the slow oscillation abruptly ceases (REM sleep). The model provides a natural basis to explain neuromodulator-induced changes in cortical activity, and indicates that a cortical phase change, rather than a brainstem “flip-flop”, may describe the transition from slow-wave sleep to REM
Binaries discovered by the SPY project. IV, Five single-lined DA double white dwarfs
We present results from our ongoing follow-up observations of double white dwarf binaries detected in the ESO SN Ia Progenitor SurveY (SPY). We discuss our observing strategy and data analysis and present the orbital solutions of five close double white dwarf binaries: HE0320−1917, HE1511−0448, WD0326−273, WD1013−010 and WD1210+140. Their periods range from 0.44 to 3.22 days. In none of these systems we find any spectral lines originating from the companion. This rules out main sequence companions and indicates that the companion white dwarfs are significantly older and cooler than the bright component. Infrared photometry suggests the presence of a cool, helium-rich white dwarf companion in the binary WD 0326−273. We briefly discuss the consequences of our findings for our understanding of the formation and evolution of double white dwarfs
Parallel Algorithm and Dynamic Exponent for Diffusion-limited Aggregation
A parallel algorithm for ``diffusion-limited aggregation'' (DLA) is described
and analyzed from the perspective of computational complexity. The dynamic
exponent z of the algorithm is defined with respect to the probabilistic
parallel random-access machine (PRAM) model of parallel computation according
to , where L is the cluster size, T is the running time, and the
algorithm uses a number of processors polynomial in L\@. It is argued that
z=D-D_2/2, where D is the fractal dimension and D_2 is the second generalized
dimension. Simulations of DLA are carried out to measure D_2 and to test
scaling assumptions employed in the complexity analysis of the parallel
algorithm. It is plausible that the parallel algorithm attains the minimum
possible value of the dynamic exponent in which case z characterizes the

Stability of Coalescence Hidden variable Fractal Interpolation Surfaces
In the present paper, the stability of Coalescence Hidden variable Fractal
Interpolation Surfaces(CHFIS) is established. The estimates on error in
approximation of the data generating function by CHFIS are found when there is
a perturbation in independent, dependent and hidden variables. It is proved
that any small perturbation in any of the variables of generalized
interpolation data results in only small perturbation of CHFIS. Our results are
likely to be useful in investigations of texture of surfaces arising from the
simulation of surfaces of rocks, sea surfaces, clouds and similar natural
objects wherein the generating function depends on more than one variable
