Network Centrality of Metro Systems
Whilst being hailed as the remedy to the world’s ills, cities will need to adapt in the 21st century. In particular, the role of public transport is likely to increase significantly, and new methods and technics to better plan transit systems are in dire need. This paper examines one fundamental aspect of transit: network centrality. By applying the notion of betweenness centrality to 28 worldwide metro systems, the main goal of this paper is to study the emergence of global trends in the evolution of centrality with network size and examine several individual systems in more detail. Betweenness was notably found to consistently become more evenly distributed with size (i.e. no “winner takes all”) unlike other complex network properties. Two distinct regimes were also observed that are representative of their structure. Moreover, the share of betweenness was found to decrease in a power law with size (with exponent 1 for the average node), but the share of most central nodes decreases much slower than least central nodes (0.87 vs. 2.48). Finally the betweenness of individual stations in several systems were examined, which can be useful to locate stations where passengers can be redistributed to relieve pressure from overcrowded stations. Overall, this study offers significant insights that can help planners in their task to design the systems of tomorrow, and similar undertakings can easily be imagined to other urban infrastructure systems (e.g., electricity grid, water/wastewater system, etc.) to develop more sustainable cities
Delayed Differentiation Makes Many Models Compatible with Data for CD8+ T Cell Differentiation
Upon antigen stimulation, naïve CD8+ T cells differentiate into short-lived effectors and longer-lived memory T cells. The kinetics of expansion of antigen-specific CD8+ T cells is highly reproducible at the population level, but the fate of individual naïve cells is stochastic, as individual naïve CD8+ T cells produce different numbers of effector and memory cells. Using mathematical models to analyse experimental data on tracing the fate of individual naïve T cells, it was previously shown that a linear model where naïve CD8+ T cells first differentiate into memory precursors that subsequently differentiate into effector cells describes the data best. However, this ‘memory first’ linear model assumed that the proliferation and differentiation events were distributed exponentially, whereas several studies indicate that differentiation of CD8+ T cell subsets need not follow an exponential distribution. Here we investigate the effect of delayed differentiation by adding intermediate compartments and use similar ordinary differential equations and Gillespie simulations to evaluate alternate models of CD8+ T cell differentiation. Models where a substantial fraction of the naïve CD8+ T cells directly differentiate into effector cells, without going through a memory phase, exhibit population dynamics that are very similar to the original ‘memory first’ linear model. Because alternate models with delayed differentiation perform better than those without a delay, we conclude that non-exponential forms of cellular differentiation need to be considered when comparing models. Hence the exact pathway for the differentiation of naïve CD8+ T cells into effector and memory T cells remains an open question
Unusual cardiovascular complications of brucellosis presenting in two men: two case reports and a review of the literature
Introduction: Brucellosis is a zoonosis with worldwide distribution, which is particularly endemic in many countries of the Mediterranean basin. Cardiovascular complications of this disease, such as endocarditis, myocarditis and pericarditis, are very rare, with even fewer cases of myocarditis or asymptomatic pericardial effusion in the absence of concomitant endocarditis being reported. Case presentation: We report two cases of brucellosis in two Caucasian men, aged 17 and 34 years old, with myocarditis and asymptomatic pericardial effusion, respectively. Of note, neither patient had concomitant endocarditis. The disease was confirmed serologically and by blood cultures. Both patients recovered completely after receiving appropriate antibiotic treatment without any sign of relapse during a follow-up of 12 months. Conclusion: These two cases emphasize that in endemic areas Brucella can be considered as a potentially causative agent of idiopathic pericardial effusion or myocarditis, even in the absence of concomitant endocarditis. This possibility could be taken into account particularly in cases where contraction of brucellosis is possible, such as occupational exposure or consumption of unpasteurized dairy products. © 2011 Gatselis et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
Bioaccumulation of Zn and Pb in <i>Avicennia marina</i> (Forsk.) Vierh. and <i>Sonneratia apetala</i> Buch. Ham. from Urban Areas of Mumbai (Bombay), India
Accumulation of heavy metals (Zn, Pb) was studied in two mangrove species Avicennia marina (Forsk.)Vierh. and Sonneratia apetala Buch.Ham. under field conditions. Variation in concentration of metals was found in leaf, root and sediment samples of these two species from different localities. Both the species of mangroves from different locations had high concentration of zinc when compared to lead. Lead showed less mobility towards the leaf tissue. In comparison to Sonneratia apetala, roots of Avicennia marina showed higher accumulation of the metals
