Annual rainfall in the Midwest has increased up to 10% since the early 20th century, while approximately 20-25% of the global corn crops have experienced yearly drought. Climate variability has increased demand for research on how management practices impact crop growth. In 2019, an open-air pot study was conducted in central Ohio to assess how a commercial seed treatment (Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO) would impact early-season above- and below-growth of corn (Zea mays L.). Two recombinant inbred lines and two commercial hybrids were selected, with each corn line treated with clothianidin + Bacillus firmus I-1582 (Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO) or untreated prior to planting. Seed treatment had a positive effect on growth staging, plant height, and root surface area at termination. However, root porosity was unaffected by seed treatment aside from one commercial hybrid where porosity decreased with seed treatment. Application of Poncho 1250 + VOTiVO improved early-season growth of seedlings, but more research is needed to understand its impact on improving crop tolerance to early-season abiotic stresses.Wilhelm and Eleanor Beckert ScholarshipBayer CropSciencePioneer Hi-Bred InternationalNo embargoAcademic Major: Sustainable Plant System

A Study of Execution Performance for Rust-Based Object vs Data Oriented Architectures

To investigate the Data-Oriented Design (DOD) paradigm, in particular, an architecture built off its principles: the Entity-Component-System (ECS). ECS is commonly used by video game engines due to its ability to store data in a way that is optimal for the cache to access. Additionally, the structure of this paradigm produces a code-base that is simple to parallelize as the workload can be distributed across a thread-pool based on the data used with little to no need for data safety measures such as mutexes and locks. A final benefit, although not easily measured, is that the DOD paradigm produces a highly decoupled code-base, resulting in more easily maintainable and extensible code

Is synesthesia more common in patients with Asperger syndrome?

    Get PDF
There is increasing evidence from case reports that synesthesia is more common in individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC). Further, genes related to synesthesia have also been found to be linked to ASC and, similar to synaesthetes, individuals with ASC show altered brain connectivity and unusual brain activation during sensory processing. However, up to now a systematic investigation of whether synesthesia is more common in ASC patients is missing. The aim of the current pilot study was to test this hypothesis by investigating a group of patients diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome (AS) using questionnaires and standard consistency tests in order to classify them as grapheme-color synaesthetes. The results indicate that there are indeed many more grapheme-color synaesthetes among AS patients. This finding is discussed in relation to different theories regarding the development of synesthesia as well as altered sensory processing in autism

"Spielend" Sprachen lernen? Zur Benutzung der Zweitsprache im Freispiel bei Kindergartenkindern in Frankreich

Researchers have not paid much attention to the ways language choice may affect the identity and social status of pre-schoolers. Conversations between children often seem banal to us, but for a child such exchanges are very important. Children create their own rituals and rules to have the right to enter a game. This article deals with the children’s choice of language depending on what they intend to communicate, on their interlocutors and on their respective language levels. Of 5 to 6 years of age, they are attending a kindergarden run by the association A.B.C.M. Zweisprachigkeit in Alsazia

Bilateral posterior RION after concomitant radiochemotherapy with temozolomide in a patient with glioblastoma multiforme: a case report

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Radiation induced optic neuropathy (RION) is a rare but severe consequence of radiation therapy that is associated with adjuvant chemotherapy, specifically therapy with vincristine or nitrosoureas. However, there is very little evidence regarding the occurrence of RION after concomitant radiochemotherapy with temozolomide.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>The case of a 63 year old woman with glioblastoma multiforme and concomitant radiochemotherapy with temozolomide is described. Due to a slight depressive episode the patient also took hypericum perforatum. Five months after cessation of fractionated radiation and adjuvant chemotherapy with temozolomide (cumulative dose of 11040 mg) the patient developed bilateral amaurosis due to RION. Tumor regrowth was excluded by magnetic resonance imaging. After the application of gadolinium a pathognomonic contrast enhancement of both prechiasmatic optic nerves could be observed.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In this patient, the occurrence of RION may have been the result of radiosensitization by temozolomide, which could have been strengthened by hypericin. Consequently, physicians should avoid a concomitant application of hypericum perforatum and radiochemotherapy.</p

Limitations include that measurements depend on the averaging time (AVT) used, which is particularly relevant to sleep medicine, but has yet received little attention. Methods: Cross-sectional review of studies reporting pulse oximeter saturation (SpO2) measurements published in 5 leading sleep medicine journals. All papers published between 2017 and 2023 reporting SpO2 measurements were screened regarding the AVT used. Results: Of 193 papers identified, 151 were included; of these, only 9 studies mentioned the AVT, 4 of these were published in one journal. The AVT ranged from zero (beat-to-beat-mode) to 10s, with 3s being used most often (33.3%), followed by 2s (22.2%).Conclusion: The AVT is only rarely mentioned in sleep medicine papers, despite its influence on sleep study results. Reported AVTs were heterogenous. Further research is warranted to set up guidelines for using or reporting the AVT.Keywords: pulse oximetry, averaging time, oxygen saturation, desaturation, SpO2, sleep medicin

BEYOND CHILDHOOD: PSYCHIATRIC COMORBIDITIES AND SOCIAL BACKGROUND OF ADULTS WITH ASPERGER SYNDROME

Background: Over the past few years, our knowledge about Asperger syndrome (AS) has increased enormously. Although it used to be a syndrome mainly encountered in childhood and adolescent psychiatry, it is now increasingly recognized in adult psychiatry. Nevertheless, little is known about psychiatric comorbidities and life course of adults with AS. The current study aimed to gain an insight into comorbidities and the development of the social situation of adults with AS. Subjects and methods: We investigated psychiatric comorbidities, psychiatric history, professional background, partnerships, and children in 50 adults with AS (34 men and 16 women) over a broad age range (20–62 years). Results: Seventy percent of adults with AS had at least one psychiatric comorbiditiy. Most frequent comorbidities were depression and anxiety disorders. Obsessive–compulsive disorder and alcohol abuse/dependence were also observed. Many adults had previously been treated with psychopharmacological or psychotherapeutic interventions. Although most adults had a high-level school leaving certificate and had gone on to complete training/university studies, less than half were currently in employment. Fourteen adults were living in a partnership and 10 had children. Conclusions: Adults with AS often have psychiatric comorbidities, indicating lower levels of mental health. Additionally, they seem to have severe limitations concerning professional success, despite having a good school education. Their family situation is also impaired with regard to starting a family. These considerable limitations in the life of adults with AS may help to understand their specific problems, and emphasize the importance of developing specific treatments for improving their mental health and social integration
