M\"obius and twisted graphene nanoribbons: stability, geometry and electronic properties
Results of classical force field geometry optimizations for twisted graphene
nanoribbons with a number of twists varying from 0 to 7 (the case =1
corresponds to a half-twist M\"obius nanoribbon) are presented in this work.
Their structural stability was investigated using the Brenner reactive force
field. The best classical molecular geometries were used as input for
semiempirical calculations, from which the electronic properties (energy
levels, HOMO, LUMO orbitals) were computed for each structure. CI wavefunctions
were also calculated in the complete active space framework taking into account
eigenstates from HOMO-4 to LUMO+4, as well as the oscillator strengths
corresponding to the first optical transitions in the UV-VIS range. The lowest
energy molecules were found less symmetric than initial configurations, and the
HOMO-LUMO energy gaps are larger than the value found for the nanographene used
to build them due to electronic localization effects created by the twisting. A
high number of twists leads to a sharp increase of the HOMO LUMO
transition energy. We suggest that some twisted nanoribbons could form crystals
stabilized by dipolar interactions
Reservation Wages and Labor Supply
We test what survey measures of the reservation wage reveal about individual labor supply, i.e., an individual’s willingness to substitute leisure by consumption. To this end, we combine the reservation wage measure from a large labor market survey with the reservation wage for a one-hour job that we elicit in an online experiment. We find that these two measures are highly correlated. On average, the experimental reservation wage increases by 50 Cents for every Euro increase in the survey measure
Magnetic unmixing of first-order reversal curve diagrams using principal component analysis
We describe a quantitative magnetic unmixing method based on principal component analysis (PCA) of first-order reversal curve (FORC) diagrams.
For PCA we resample FORC distributions on grids that capture diagnostic signatures of single-domain (SD), pseudo-single-domain (PSD), and multidomain (MD) magnetite, as well as of minerals such as hematite. Individual FORC diagrams are recast as linear combinations of end-member (EM) FORC diagrams, located at user-defined positions in PCA space. The EM selection is guided by constraints derived from physical modeling and imposed by data scatter. We investigate temporal variations of two EMs in bulk North Atlantic sediment cores collected from the Rockall Trough and the Iberian Continental Margin. Sediments from each site contain a mixture of magnetosomes and granulometrically distinct detrital magnetite. We also quantify
the spatial variation of three EM components (a coarse silt-sized MD component, a fine silt-sized PSD component, and a mixed clay-sized component containing both SD magnetite and hematite) in surficial sediments along the flow path of the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). These samples were separated into granulometric fractions, which helped constrain EM definition. PCA-based unmixing reveals systematic variations in EM relative abundance as a function of distance along NADW flow. Finally, we apply PCA to the combined dataset of Rockall Trough and NADW sediments, which can be recast as a four-EM mixture, providing enhanced discrimination between components. A ulceração oral é uma queixa comum dos pacientes que são atendidos em ambulatórios. Com freqüência é difícil estabelecer um diagnóstico preciso e atingir o controle dos sinais e sintomas dos pacientes que apresentam ulceração oral. Os pacientes acometidos por ulceração oral são eventualmente encaminhados para os ambulatórios de gastroenterologia, entretanto, a maioria das úlceras não reflete doença gastrointestinal, e sim desordens sistêmicas que podem se apresentar com sinais e sintomas clínicos similares. O objetivo do presente artigo foi revisar aspectos da etiologia, diagnóstico e tratamento das desordens ulcerativas mais comuns da mucosa oral. Foi realizada uma busca no banco de dados MEDLINE da National Library of Medicine. A seleção dos artigos, coleta de dados e julgamento em termos da pertinência de inclusão foram realizadas pelos autores. Baseado na literatura pesquisada, foi concluído que existem várias doenças sistêmicas que podem apresentar sinais e sintomas clínicos semelhantes e o conhecimento de cada doença poderá guiar o clínico para uma intervenção apropriada.Oral ulceration is a common complaint of patients attending out-patient clinics. Because of the diversity in causes of oral ulceration, patients presenting with oral mucosal disease can be challenging to diagnose and manage. Patients with signs or symptoms of oral ulcers are sometimes referred to gastroenterology clinics; however, in most instances the ulcers do not result from gastrointestinal disease. The aim of the present article is to review aspects of the etiology, diagnosis and management of common ulcerative disorders of the oral mucosa. A search in the National Library of Medicine computerized bibliographic database MEDLINE was performed. Selection of publications, extraction of data, and validity assessment were then performed by the authors. Based upon the searched literature, it is concluded that there are several systemic disorders that can present with similar clinical signs and symptoms, and knowledge of each disease is necessary for the clinician to provide proper management
Measurement of the νe CC π+ cross-section using the ND280 tracker and development of optical diffuser calibration systems for Hyper-Kamiokande
Over the last few decades our understanding of the physics that governs neutrino oscillations has evolved rapidly through an experimental program designed to measure the key neutrino oscillation parameters. This thesis provides an overlook into the Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) long baseline accelerator neutrino experiment, and the next generation water Cherenkov detector Hyper-Kamiokande; both designed to make precise measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters. In the T2K far detector a data excess is seen in the νe charged current π+ sample, a significant channel in electron neutrino appearance studies. An analysis is presented in this thesis to investigate νe charged current π + production using the o↵-axis near detector (ND280) tracker of the T2K experiment. A novel selection has been developed and the systematic uncertainties evaluated to measure a flux averaged cross-section of σ = (2.23 ± 0.39(stat.) ± 0.38(syst.)) × 10-39 cm2 per nucleon. This result provides the first ever cross-section measurement of νe charged current π + production on a carbon target. With kinematic constraints applied, analogous to the far detector sample, preliminary studies indicate no data excess using the near detector. This thesis also presents the research and development of optical calibration systems for Hyper-Kamiokande. A diffuser ball and complimentary enclosure have been designed for PMT energy and timing calibration in water Cherenkov detectors. Experimental measurements under laboratory conditions have been made to test the relative performances throughout development stages. Furthermore, the diffuser systems have been successfully deployed into the Super-Kamiokande detector, where preliminary studies indicate the systems work as expected
