Arciteatro is a simple and clear project – although very well articulated - that Varisco prepared when she was invited to participate in the competition organized by the Municipality of Milan for the construction of a sculpture intended to be located in the square near the Arcimboldi Theatre. The artist then thought of "inhabit" the public space with geometric - but open - shapes, of the kind that it’s often possible to find in his work, forms that, in their mutual dialectical relationship and tension with the surrounding environment, create a new and different spatial dimension, in which the perception habits of the public are challenged, as it always happens in her work, which are often declined in the concrete dimension of the surrounding space

Design and fabrication of elevon cove thermal protection systems for aerospace vehicles

The design study of a lightweight, effective, reuseable seal for use along the elevon cove of shuttle-type reentry and hypersonic cruise vehicles is presented. The study deals primarily with membrane seals, both metallic and non-metallic. This type of seal spans the cove gap between the wing and elevon, and does not depend on spring tension to maintain contact along a flexing wing span. Technical requirements and criteria were generally derived from the space shuttle and utilized for seal design

Algebraic K-theory of group rings and the cyclotomic trace map

We prove that the Farrell-Jones assembly map for connective algebraic K-theory is rationally injective, under mild homological finiteness conditions on the group and assuming that a weak version of the Leopoldt-Schneider conjecture holds for cyclotomic fields. This generalizes a result of B\"okstedt, Hsiang, and Madsen, and leads to a concrete description of a large direct summand of Kn(Z[G])ZQK_n(\mathbb{Z}[G])\otimes_{\mathbb{Z}}\mathbb{Q} in terms of group homology. In many cases the number theoretic conjectures are true, so we obtain rational injectivity results about assembly maps, in particular for Whitehead groups, under homological finiteness assumptions on the group only. The proof uses the cyclotomic trace map to topological cyclic homology, B\"okstedt-Hsiang-Madsen's functor C, and new general isomorphism and injectivity results about the assembly maps for topological Hochschild homology and C.Comment: To appear in Advances in Mathematics. 77 page

Fil: Varisco, Cristina. A program was conducted to develop a lightweight, efficient metallic thermal protection system (TPS) for application to future shuttle-type reentry vehicles, advanced space transports, and hypersonic cruise vehicles. Technical requirements were generally derived from the space shuttle. A corrugation-stiffened beaded-skin TPS design was used as a baseline. The system was updated and modified to incorporate the latest technology developments and design criteria. The primary objective was to minimize mass for the total system
