Efficacy of fentanyl transdermal patch in pain control after lower third molar surgery : a preliminary study

Surgical removal of impacted lower third molars is a common oral surgical procedure, generally followed by moderate to severe postoperative pain. Transdermal drug delivery as a concept offers interesting possibilities for postoperative pain control. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of transdermal system with fentanyl in relieving pain following impacted lower third molar surgery. Seventeen patients with bilateral impacted lower third molars were included in this preliminary study. For postoperative pain control, patients randomly received a fentanyl patch plus placebo tablet after the first operation and regular (placebo) patch and an analgesic, after the second operation. Analgesia was evaluated during first 24 hours postoperatively according to patients? reports about time of first pain appearance and additional analgesic consumption. Pain severity was rated using a 10 cm long visual analogue scale (VAS). Intensity of postoperative pain and postoperative analgesic consumption were significantly lower after the Fentanyl Transdermal System (FTS) was applied (p<0.05). Duration of postoperative analgesia was significantly higher with FTS when compared to control treatment (p<0.05). Based on the results of this preliminary study, transdermal system with fentanyl significantly reduced postoperative pain after third molar surgery

    AI, You're Fired! Artwork

The paper is text-based artwork, which is representing the initial conceptualization or contemplative phase of the media art and contemporary art performance and installation. The objective of the long term art project is to further examine the potential of engagement of the advanced technology within the context of artistic research and contemporary art practice, with the specific postulate that the potential product of the artwork is expected to be imperceptible. The artistic research is referring to the philosophical and metaphysics idea that the alleged real reality cannot be perceived or defined via some concept. The question is, if it is so, than, is the art or the artist capable to successfully illustrate the undetectable real reality, even with the most advanced technological instruments employed. The text-based contemporary artwork is partly referring to another segment, which can be also observed within the context of the contemporary art – text based computer adventure games. More specifically, the method implemented for establishing the artwork’s concept uses some aspects similar to those used in early text-based computer games. There are several stages in which the long-term artwork will progress. The initial form is designed in such a manner which would confirm that this segment of artwork not only does serve as a fundament for the other parts to unfold, but is also autonomous and is already completed in terms of contemporary art. This stand is applicable to all the consecutive stages – each segment is both independent and contextual. The following stages would include the interactivity between the author, art audience, but also with the devices applied for the producing the artwork, like advanced technology instruments e.g. augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR) devices, then interactive 3D technology, artificial intelligence (AI), plus the interactivity with the no-reality (reality in spiritual and philosophical contexts)

CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT DISPOSITION OF FLUORESCENT PINK ROSE PETALS IN SPACE

Computer technology and ambient media are playing an important role in contemporary art. They enable artist to implement a new approach in integration of audience into an art work, and vice versa. The content of the artwork is enriched with completely different meaning. The spectator becomes not only the legitimate part of an artwork; he is also its co-creator. When I create ambience or artistic installations, I am never doing it with any kind of predomination. I don’t think beforehand. It is not my intention to solve any problem, to point to a problem or its solution, or to comment or judge anything. Everything is perfect just the way it is, anyway. My only motif and intention is to absolutely enjoy, and to share this feeling and emotion of joy and fun. I simply follow my instinct, my intuition and my bliss. Ideas come spontaneously, with absolute joy. I feel that good artwork consists of two parts. One is small, the one that is observed by senses, or eyes, ears, touch. This is an initial impulse for the consumer; it is not wise if this part is descriptive, too obvious, because it would distract another, bigger part of an artwork. This part is happening in spectators mind and heart, this is an invisible part

The U.S. Grand Strategy Toward the Pacific Islands

The United States has recently placed its relations with the Pacific Islands, fourteen small states far out in the Pacific Ocean, on its high-priority diplomatic agenda. Although it has been interacting with the islands since the 1800s and had heavily relied on their cooperation during World War II, the importance of the islands waned in the eyes of the United States in the late twentieth and the beginning of the twenty first century as the country turned its attention to other regions of the world. However, in recent years, the U.S. has recognized the need to strengthen relations with the islands once again as Chinese influence grows in the region. Opening three new embassies in record time, while also increasing economic assistance to the islands, demonstrates U.S. efforts to rekindle close ties with the island states. This thesis reviews U.S. grand strategy toward the Pacific Islands since the start of their relations until the present time and explains it in light of the international political landscape and U.S. foreign policy goals

Initial Fatigue Life Estimation of Welded Structural Components

    Get PDF
Numerical modelling of welding process of two cylindrical tubes subjected to cyclic loads of constant amplitude is presented. For that purpose the Finite Element Method (FEM) was used for determination of thermo-mechanical behaviour and evaluation of welded joint residual stresses. In this investigation an efficient computation method for initial fatigue life estimation of welded structural components has been developed. Computation method with corresponding computation procedure is based on finite element numerical simulations of the thermal and stress analyses. As measure of fatigue resistance of welded structural elements, estimated values of low cycle fatigue life were used. Estimation of damages up to crack initiation in the welded joints of two cylindrical tubes was performed using SWT (Smith-Watson-Topper) relations. Present computation results are compared with corresponding experimental results of welded structural components. Obtained computation results of initial fatigue life estimation of welded structural element are in good agreement with experimental results
