Renormalization aspects of N=1 Super Yang-Mills theory in the Wess-Zumino gauge
The renormalization of N=1 Super Yang-Mills theory is analysed in the
Wess-Zumino gauge, employing the Landau condition. An all orders proof of the
renormalizability of the theory is given by means of the Algebraic
Renormalization procedure. Only three renormalization constants are needed,
which can be identified with the coupling constant, gauge field and gluino
renormalization. The non-renormalization theorem of the gluon-ghost-antighost
vertex in the Landau gauge is shown to remain valid in N=1 Super Yang-Mills.
Moreover, due to the non-linear realization of the supersymmetry in the
Wess-Zumino gauge, the renormalization factor of the gauge field turns out to
be different from that of the gluino. These features are explicitly checked
through a three loop calculation.Comment: 15 pages, minor text improvements, references added. Version accepted

Implementing the Gribov-Zwanziger framework in N=1 Super Yang-Mills in the Landau gauge
The Gribov-Zwanziger framework accounting for the existence of Gribov copies
is extended to N=1 Super Yang--Mills theories quantized in the Landau gauge. We
show that the restriction of the domain of integration in the Euclidean
functional integral to the first Gribov horizon can be implemented in a way to
recover non-perturbative features of N=1 Super Yang--Mills theories, namely:
the existence of the gluino condensate as well as the vanishing of the vacuum
energy.Comment: 19 pages, no figure
The Bionic Clicker Mark I & II
In this paper we present two ‘Bionic Clicker’ systems, the first designed to demonstrate electromyography (EMG) based control systems for educational purposes and the second for research purposes. EMG based control systems pick up electrical signals generated by muscle activation and use these as inputs for controllers. EMG controllers are widely used in prosthetics to control limbs.
The Mark I (MK I) clicker allows the wearer to change the slide of a presentation by raising their index finger. It is built around a microcontroller and a bio-signals shield. It generated a lot of interest from both the public and research community.
The Mark II (MK II) device presented here was designed to be a cheaper, sleeker, and more customizable system that can be easily modified and directly transmit EMG data. It is built using a wireless capable microcontroller and a muscle sensor
The asymmetry of the dimension 2 gluon condensate: the zero temperature case
We provide an algebraic study of the local composite operators A_\mu
A_\nu-\delta_{\mu\nu}/d A^2 and A^2, with d=4 the spacetime dimension. We prove
that these are separately renormalizable to all orders in the Landau gauge.
This corresponds to a renormalizable decomposition of the operator A_\mu A_\nu
into its trace and traceless part. We present explicit results for the relevant
renormalization group functions to three loop order, accompanied with various
tests of these results. We then develop a formalism to determine the zero
temperature effective potential for the corresponding condensates, and recover
the already known result for \neq 0, together with <A_\mu
A_\nu-\delta_{\mu\nu}/d A^2>=0, a nontrivial check that the approach is
consistent with Lorentz symmetry. The formalism is such that it is readily
generalizable to the finite temperature case, which shall allow a future
analytical study of the electric-magnetic symmetry of the condensate,
which received strong evidence from recent lattice simulations by Chernodub and
Ilgenfritz, who related their results to 3 regions in the Yang-Mills phase
diagram.Comment: 25 page
Decreasing population selection rates of resistance mutation K65R over time in HIV-1 patients receiving combination therapy including tenofovir
Objectives The use of tenofovir is highly associated with the emergence of mutation K65R, which confers broad resistance to nucleoside/nucleotide analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), especially when tenofovir is combined with other NRTIs also selecting for K65R. Although recent HIV-1 treatment guidelines discouraging these combinations resulted in reduced K65R selection with tenofovir, updated information on the impact of currently recommended regimens on the population selection rate of K65R is presently lacking. Methods In this study, we evaluated changes over time in the selection rate of resistance mutation K65R in a large population of 2736 HIV-1-infected patients failing combination antiretroviral treatment between 2002 and 2010. Results The K65R resistance mutation was detected in 144 patients, a prevalence of 5.3%. A large majority of observed K65R cases were explained by the use of tenofovir, reflecting its wide use in clinical practice. However, changing patterns over time in NRTIs accompanying tenofovir resulted in a persistent decreasing probability of K65R selection by tenofovir-based therapy. The currently recommended NRTI combination tenofovir/emtricitabine was associated with a low probability of K65R emergence. For any given dual NRTI combination including tenofovir, higher selection rates of K65R were consistently observed with a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor than with a protease inhibitor as the third agent. Discussion Our finding of a stable time trend of K65R despite elevated use of tenofovir illustrates increased potency of current HIV-1 therapy including tenofovi
Imaging the human placental microcirculation with micro-focus computed tomography: Optimisation of tissue preparation and image acquisition
Micro-CT provides 3D volume imaging with spatial resolution at the micrometre scale. We investigated the optimal human placenta tissue preparation (contrast agent, perfusion pressure, perfusion location and perfusion vessel) and imaging (energy, target material, exposure time and frames) parameters.
Microfil (Flow Tech, Carver, MA) produced better fill than Barium sulphate (84.1%(±11.5%)vs70.4%(±18.02%) p = 0.01). Perfusion via umbilical artery produced better fill than via chorionic vessels (83.8%(±17.7%)vs78.0%(±21.9%), p < 0.05), or via umbilical vein (83.8%(±16.4%)vs69.8%(±20.3%), p < 0.01). Imaging at 50 keV with a molybdenum target produced the best contrast to noise ratio. We propose this method to enable quantification and comparison of the human fetoplacental vascular tree
