Design and simulation of a low-cost biosensor for point-of-care diagnose devices

    Get PDF
The principal aim of the work is to help in the development of a low-cost biosensor capable of providing a reliable diagnosis to inexpert users. Rather than being a precise measurement instrument like mass spectrometers, this biosensor should be able to qualitatively detect and distinguish between the most relevant families of the bacteria causing mycobacterium tuberculosis in human fluids. Other approaches pursue outstanding sensitivity relying on expensive materials and microfabrication processes. Despite other requisites, low-cost imposes certain criteria regarding materials, systems, fabrication techniques and user interfaces to be included in the device.Ingeniería Biomédic

Export feasibility study of Pohnpein marine venture

[Abstract]: US subsidized funds have been the primary source of revenue for the FSM for decades as the nation never developed a market economy. This funding is being withdrawn and the nation must develop a self-supporting economic base. The export of marine ornamentals has been identified as a potentially profit-generating industry, and this dissertation examines the economic feasibility and the environmental and cultural impact of harvesting and exporting Pohnpein fish. Economic evaluation is derived by applying a Cost Effective Analysis. There are seven constraints associated with this analysis: environmental, financial, distributional, management, transportation, cultural, infrastructure. This analytical framework addresses the three research objectives of this study: a cost estimation of the venture, identification of a profitable mix of fish, and the effect the monopoly structure of the FSM transport industry has on export viability. It was determined that a product mix of 21 species of fish could generate a positive revenue stream. It is unknown, however, how many firms the industry could support as quantitative data on the fish stock of Pohnpein waters has not been published. Analysis of environmental and cultural constraints revealed multiple intangible costs and consequences of the export. It could not be determined if the monetary contribution to Pohnpein society would be enough to offset these negative repercussions as such alterations could not be reversed or replaced. The negative intangibles of the export impact so heavily on the NPV that viability is reduced to 0. As a result, economic justification of the export is not present as overall outcome of the export to society could not be fully calculated

Influence of location, soil types, and herbicide rates of cotton response to fluometron and trifluralin

Weed control in cotton is achieved by using a system of mechanical cultivation and herbicide application. Over the past few years the yield per hectare of cotton has decreased throughout Tennessee. Field studies were conducted during 1977 at Ames Plantation, Jackson, and Milan to determine if the decrease in production has been due to the phytotoxic effects of herbicides currently in use. The plots were arranged in a split-plot design with four replications at Jackson and three replications at Ames and Milan. The main treatments were trifluralin at 0 and 0.8 kg/ha applied preplant incorporated. The sub-plot treatments were fluometuron at 0, 0.8, 1.1, 1.4, 1.7, and 3.4 kg/ha applied preemergence. All plots were maintained in a weed-free condition by hand-hoeing and mechanical cultivation. Soil types were: Loring silt loam and Memphis silt loam at Ames Plantation; Grenada silt loam, Loring silt loam, and Falaya silt loam at Milan; and Memphis silt loam at Jackson. Data were obtained on cotton seedling fresh and dry weight, stand, maturity date, and yield. Early herbicide injury, as noted by fresh and dry weight, was later expressed in delayed cotton maturity. A significant reduction in yield occurred on the Memphis silt loam at Ames and Jackson on plots treated with 3.4 kg/ha (2X) rate of fluometuron without trifluralin. Also, yield was reduced by the 3.4 kg/ha (2X) rate of fluometuron both with and without trifluralin on the Loring silt loam at Ames. No significant yield differences were observed at Milan. Even though some early injury and delay in maturity were noted at some locations, the data from this one-year experiment showed no reduction in cotton yields when recommended rates of the herbicides were used

Political aspirations of Colonial women: The correspondence of Mercy Otis Warren and Abigail Smith Adams

    Get PDF
This thesis seeks to understand how women could become politically active during the War for Independence. As I began researching women of the period, I grew aware of the connection between Abigail Smith Adams and Mercy Otis Warren through the letters they left behind which developed into the following work. Though both women were better educated than a majority of women of the time, their conversations give a unique window into viewing the world women lived in. Their letters especially highlight how they not only became invested in the cause of independence but also how they sought to express their thoughts equally among men. By delving into the letters of both women, collected by The Massachusetts Historical Society, it became clear that women also struggled to maintain their own social hierarchy in relationships through deference like men, suggesting that they adopted more than just masculine political interests. Their friendship, as seen through their letters, shows the investment and hopes women held with the War for Independence. Their struggle to agree on life after the war, and their inability to maintain their friendship because of political disagreements, suggests that women became equally invested in politics when given the chance

Advanced heterogeneous catalytic systems for biofuels production derived from HMF
