    Leaching of pure chalcocite in a chloride media using sea water and wastewater

    Chalcocite is the most important and abundant secondary copper ore in the world with a rapid dissolution of copper in an acid-chloride environment. In this investigation, the methodology of surface optimization will be applied to evaluate the e_ect of three independent variables (time, concentration of sulfuric acid and chloride concentration) in the leaching of pure chalcocite to extract the copper with the objective of obtaining a quadratic model that allows us to predict the extraction of copper. The kinetics of copper dissolution in regard to the function of temperature is also analyzed. An ANOVA indicates that the linear variables with the greatest influence are time and the chloride concentration. Also, the concentration of chloride-time exerts a significant synergic e_ect in the quadratic model. The ANOVA indicates that the quadratic model is representative and the R2 value of 0.92 is valid. The highest copper extraction (67.75%) was obtained at 48 h leaching under conditions of 2 mol/L H2SO4 and 100 g/L chloride. The XRD analysis shows the formation of a stable and non-polluting residue; such as elemental sulfur (S0).     Global Mapping of Earth-like Exoplanets from Scattered Light Curves

    Scattered lights from terrestrial exoplanets provide valuable information about the planetary surface. Applying the surface reconstruction method proposed by Fujii et al. (2010) to both diurnal and annual variations of the scattered light, we develop a reconstruction method of land distribution with both longitudinal and latitudinal resolutions. We find that one can recover a global map of an idealized Earth-like planet on the following assumptions: 1) cloudless, 2) a face-on circular orbit, 3) known surface types and their reflectance spectra 4) no atmospheric absorption, 5) known rotation rate 6) static map, and 7) no moon. Using the dependence of light curves on the planetary obliquity, we also show that the obliquity can be measured by adopting the chi-square minimization or the extended information criterion. We demonstrate a feasibility of our methodology by applying it to a multi-band photometry of a cloudless model Earth with future space missions such as the occulting ozone observatory (O3). We conclude that future space missions can estimate both the surface distribution and the obliquity at least for cloudless Earth-like planets within 5 pc.Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Thomas Ades's 'The Exterminating Angel'

    Thomas Adès's third opera, The Exterminating Angel, is based closely upon Luis Buñuel's 1962 film El ángel exterminador, in which the hosts and guests at a high-society dinner party find themselves inexplicably unable to leave the dining room. Initial critical response to the opera too often focused on superficial similarities and discrepancies between the two works at the expense of attending to the specifically musical ways in which Adès presented the drama. This article explores the role that repetition plays in the opera, and in particular how repetitions serve both as a means of critiquing bourgeois sensibilities and as a representation of (loss of) will. I conclude by drawing on the work of Deleuze in order to situate the climax of the opera against the notion of the eternal return, highlighting how the music articulates the dramatic failure of the characters to escape

    Statistical and kinetic study for leaching of covellite in a chloride media

    Covellite is a relatively rare copper sulfide with slow dissolution kinetics. The present investigation used the surface optimization methodology to evaluate the effect of three independent variables (time, chloride concentration and sulfuric acid concentration) on the rate of extracting Cu from covellite. The effects of chloride concentration and temperature over time were also studied. An ANOVA indicated that the linear variables of time and chloride concentration have the greatest influence, this being highly representative (R2 = 0.9945). The highest copper extraction rate (71.23%) at room temperature, was obtained with a high chloride concentration (100 g/L), a low concentration of sulfuric acid (0.5 M), and a leaching period of 600 h. The dissolution is described by the model of the unreacted core, the rate of leaching of the covellite is controlled by the chemical surface reaction at temperatures between 50 and 90°C, with concentrations of 0.5 M of H2SO4, 100 g/L of chloride, and a leaching period of up to 6 hours, where an activation energy of 72.36 kJ/mol was obtaine.The authors are grateful for the contribution of the Scientific Equipment Unit-MAINI of the Universidad Católica del Norte for aiding in generating data by automated electronic microscopy QEMSCAN® and for facilitating the chemical analysis of the solutions.     IgE-Mediated Hypersensitivity Reactions to Cannabis in Laboratory Personnel

    Background: There have been sporadic reports of hypersensitivity reactions to plants of the Cannabinaceae family (hemp and hops), but it has remained unclear whether these reactions are immunologic or nonimmunologic in nature. Objective: We examined the IgE-binding and histamine-releasing properties of hashish and marijuana extracts by CAP-FEIA and a basophil histamine release test. Methods: Two workers at a forensic laboratory suffered from nasal congestion, rbinitis, sneezing and asthmatic symptoms upon occupational contact with hashish or marijuana, which they had handled frequently for 25 and 16 years, respectively. Neither patient had a history of atopic disease. Serum was analyzed for specific IgE antibodies to hashish or marijuana extract by research prototype ImmunoCAP, and histamine release from basophils upon exposure to hashish or marijuana extracts was assessed. Results were matched to those of 4 nonatopic and 10 atopic control subjects with no known history of recreational or occupational exposure to marijuana or hashish. Results: Patient 1 had specific IgE to both hashish and marijuana (CAP class 2), and patient 2 to marijuana only (CAP class 2). Controls proved negative for specific IgE except for 2 atopic individuals with CAP class 1 to marijuana and 1 other atopic individual with CAP class 1 to hashish. Stimulation of basophils with hashish or marijuana extracts elicited histamine release from basophils of both patients and 4 atopic control subjects. Conclusions: Our results suggest an IgE-related pathomechanism for hypersensitivity reactions to marijuana or hashish. Copyright (C) 2011 S. Karger AG, Base

Moreover, it is also shown how a new type of a tightly confined surface plasmon polariton mode can be created by just milling a periodic corrugation into a metallic ridge placed on top of a metal surface

    Main carrot root attributes based on stake holders perceptions

    Procurou-se verificar quais são as características mais importantes da raiz de cenoura sob a ótica dos agentes da cadeia produtiva de cenoura. Para tanto, foram realizadas visitas e entrevistas com produtores, empresas de semente, vendedores de insumos, lavadores, processadores, atacadistas e gerentes de supermercados, comparando-se esses resultados com os da pesquisa de percepção de consumidores de supermercados do Distrito Federal. Em ambos os casos, utilizou-se questionário estruturado com perguntas fechadas nas quais os entrevistados classificaram os atributos segundo notas que variaram de 1 (nenhuma importância) a 5 (muito importante). Para verificar a ordenação de importância dos atributos e os contrastes das médias, utilizou-se o método estatístico de análise de dados categóricos. O resultado da pesquisa indicou que os consumidores estão preocupados com valores nutricionais, textura, cor externa e sabor da cenoura. Já os demais agentes da cadeia atentaram mais para as características relacionadas com a padronização, com a coloração externa e com o ombro verde. Foram detectadas diferenças de percepção entre os agentes da cadeia, em especial dos consumidores, para os quais foram observadas diferenças nas respostas em função do gênero, idade, grau de escolaridade, estado civil e localização do supermercado. Estes resultados são muito importantes para o direcionamento de projetos de pesquisa com cenoura, que precisa atender as exigências tanto do setor produtivo quanto dos consumidores. ________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe present investigation aimed at elucidating the carrot attributes which stake holders view as the most important. A research was carried out with carrot growers, seed companies, supplier salespersons, washers, food processors, wholesalers and supermarket managers and was compared to the perception of consumers from supermarkets located in the Federal District of Brazil. Data sets were collected through structured interviews with closed questions about the importance of a range of attributes on a 1 (not important) to 5 (very important) scale. Statistic method based on categorical analysis was used to rank the attributes and calculate the average contrasts. The survey indicated that, according to consumers, nutritional value, texture, external color and taste are the most important attributes. In contrast, the other stake holders pay more attention to characteristics related to shape uniformity, external color and green shoulder. In addition, differences of perception by specific chain agents were detected, in special to the consumers group, affected by gender, age, educational level, marital status and supermarket location. These results are very important for directing carrot research projects, which must meet the productive sector and consumers requirements

    Molecular-orbital theory for the stopping power of atoms in the low velocity regime:the case of helium in alkali metals

    A free-parameter linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals approach is presented for analyzing the stopping power of slow ions moving in a metal. The method is applied to the case of He moving in alkali metals. Mean stopping powers for He present a good agreement with local-density-approximation calculations.     Development of forest structure and leaf area in secondary forests regenerating on abandoned pastures in Central Amazonia

    The area of secondary forest (SF) regenerating from pastures is increasing in the Amazon basin; however, the return of forest and canopy structure following abandonment is not well understood. This study examined the development of leaf area index (LAI), canopy cover, aboveground biomass, stem density, diameter at breast height (DBH), and basal area ( BA) by growth form and diameter class for 10 SFs regenerating from abandoned pastures. Biomass accrual was tree dominated, constituting >= 94% of the total measured biomass in all forests abandoned >= 4 to 6 yr. Vine biomass increased with forest age, but its relative contribution to total biomass decreased with time. The forests were dominated by the tree Vismia spp. (> 50%). Tree stem density peaked after 6 to 8 yr ( 10 320 stems per hectare) before declining by 42% in the 12- to 14-yr-old SFs. Small-diameter tree stems in the 1-5-cm size class composed > 58% of the total stems for all forests. After 12 to 14 yr, there was no significant leaf area below 150-cm height. Leaf area return (LAI = 3.2 after 12 to 14 yr) relative to biomass was slower than literature-reported recovery following slash-and-burn, where LAI can reach primary forest levels ( LAI = 4 - 6) in 5 yr. After 12 to 14 yr, the colonizing vegetation returned some components of forest structure to values reported for primary forest. Basal area and LAI were 50% - 60%, canopy cover and stem density were nearly 100%, and the rapid tree-dominated biomass accrual was 25% - 50% of values reported for primary forest. Biomass accumulation may reach an asymptote earlier than expected because of even-aged, monospecific, untiered stand structure. The very slow leaf area accumulation relative to biomass and to reported values for recovery following slash-and-burn indicates a different canopy development pathway that warrants further investigation of causes ( e. g., nutrient limitations, competition) and effects on processes such as evapotranspiration and soil water uptake, which would influence long-term recovery rates and have regional implications

    Perspectives for a mixed two-qubit system with binomial quantum states

    The problem of the relationship between entanglement and two-qubit systems in which it is embedded is central to the quantum information theory. This paper suggests that the concurrence hierarchy as an entanglement measure provides an alternative view of how to think about this problem. We consider mixed states of two qubits and obtain an exact solution of the time-dependent master equation that describes the evolution of two two-level qubits (or atoms) within a perfect cavity for the case of multiphoton transition. We consider the situation for which the field may start from a binomial state. Employing this solution, the significant features of the entanglement when a second qubit is weakly coupled to the field and becomes entangled with the first qubit, is investigated. We also describe the response of the atomic system as it varies between the Rabi oscillations and the collapse-revival mode and investigate the atomic inversion and the Q-function. We identify and numerically demonstrate the region of parameters where significantly large entanglement can be obtained. Most interestingly, it is shown that features of the entanglement is influenced significantly when the multi-photon process is involved. Finally, we obtain illustrative examples of some novel aspects of this system and show how the off-resonant case can sensitize entanglement to the role of initial state setting.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
