Cross-Modality Diagnostic Agreement in Canine Medial Coronoid Disease in a Screening Population: Radiographs vs. CT in 424 Elbow Joints

No full text
Diagnostic imaging is a crucial non-invasive tool for evaluating canine elbow joints, particularly for screening and treatment planning of medial coronoid disease (MCD). Radiography remains the most accessible and widely used screening modality, but its diagnostic accuracy varies significantly. Sensitivity values reported in previous studies vary depending on factors such as study population, imaging technique, and interpretation criteria. This study compared four measures (sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value) of radiography with a more advanced imaging method, computed tomography (CT), which provides more detailed images of bones. The results showed that radiography correctly identified 65% of the cases (17/26), while missing some of the affected joints. Furthermore, 7% of the healthy joints (29/398) were misdiagnosed as diseased, leading to a specificity of 93% (369/398). For a disease prevalence of 6% (26/424), the positive and negative predictive value of radiography were 37% (17/46) and 98% (369/378), respectively. Overall, when CT is available, it is the preferred technique for screening. In cases where it is not available, it is important to have an idea of the sensitivity and specificity, but also of the positive and negative predictive value, especially at low prevalences. These results help veterinarians make better decisions when screening for elbow problems in dogs

Objective: To characterize diabetes care across healthcare facilities in six Peruvian regions. Methods: Cross-sectional study of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), ranging from primary care facilities to hospital-based facilities, in six Peruvian regions. Data was collected by health staff trained between 2012 and 2016. We studied six diabetes care outcomes and four adequate diabetes care outcomes considering the healthcare facility as the exposure of interest. We estimated prevalence ratios (PR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) using Poisson regression with robust variance. Results: Data from 8879 patients with T2DM, mean age 59.1 years (SD ± 12.2), 53.6% males, was analyzed. Of these, 8096 (91.2%) were treated at primary care facilities. The proportions of patients who had HbA1c, LDL-c, and creatinine/microalbumin test performed increased with the setting of the healthcare facility. Overall, 39%–56% of patients had an adequate HbA1c control, being higher in hospital-based facilities with specialists in comparison to primary care facilities. Conclusions: We observed that the higher the setting of the facility, the higher the rate of the assessed diabetes care outcomes and adequate diabetes care for four of the six targets (fasting glucose, HbA1c, LDL-c and creatinine or microalbumin) and for three of the four targets (glucose≤130 mg/dL, HbA1c ≤7%(53 mmol/mol) and LDL-c <100 mg/dL), respectively. Substantial gaps were observed at the primary care facilities, calling for the strengthening of diabetes care. © 2020 Primary Care Diabetes Europ

The global ascendancy of Korean cosmetic products, propelled by the Korean Wave phenomenon, has fundamentally reshaped beauty standards and consumer behaviors worldwide. This study aimed to determine the factors influencing the use of Korean cosmetics among female university students in the Philippines, focusing on perceived authenticity, aesthetic appeal, and facial perception. A structured questionnaire was administered to 175 respondents from a private university in Metro Manila. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and regression analysis. Results indicated a statistically significant positive correlation between the perceived aesthetic appeal of packaging (β = .211, p < .006) and the usage of Korean cosmetics. Regression analysis confirmed that perceived aesthetic appeal was a determinant of product usage (R2 = 0.176, P ≤ 0.05). Facial attractiveness (β = .107, p = .165) were found to be statistically significantly correlated with usage, however, found to be not statistically significant determinant. Perceived authenticity (β = .005, p = .950) showed no correlation with product usage and not a determinant as well. These findings underscore the importance of visual aesthetics in consumer behavior among young Filipino consumers, providing strategic insights for brands in the competitive beauty market of the Philippines
