Sediment type unsupervised classification of the Molenplaat, Westerschelde estuary, The Netherlands
Sediment stability or erosion resistance of intertidal zones depend on sediment physical characteristics and on biological factors. Obtaining accurate data on the basic biological, chemical and physical processes in sediments is expensive and difficult. Remote sensing methods can produce detailed information on ecological functioning in a cost-effective manner. A hyperspectral image of the Molenplaat, an intertidal flat in the Westerschelde estuary, the Netherlands, was acquired with the HyMap sensor in June 2004. The goal of this research is to perform, analyse and evaluate unsupervised classification methods for sediment types on the imagery. The unsupervised methods are based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) or Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Technique (ISODATA), and consist of three steps: (a) classification into spectrally distinct clusters, (b) post-clustering treatment, and (c) assignment of labels to the clusters. The result consists of 13 clusters after the post-clustering treatment, and of 8 or 9 classes after labelling for either the PCA or ISODATA method. A supervised Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) classification was performed using field data to evaluate the unsupervised classification results. The labelling of the unsupervised clusters was also partly based on the SAM results, due to limited field data. The comparison of the results reveals that 69% and 73% of the pixels of PCA and ISODATA classification respectively were identically labelled in the supervised classification. Moreover, the mismatches were mainly found in two classes, while the other classes showed high similarities, indicating the plausibility of using unsupervised classification methods for intertidal sediment types. Additional strengths of the unsupervised classification methods are (a) the distinction of classes that were not visited during field work and not classified in the supervised classification, (b) the identification of spectrally distinct areas that should be characterised during field campaigns, and (c) the user-friendliness thanks to limited required field knowledge and short calculation time
Autofiction and the possibility of life in neoliberal ruins: reification, friction and the affective dominant in Weijers and Heti
This essay analyses the intersection of the novel and neoliberalism as a relation of friction (Tsing). Whereas former studies of literature and neoliberalism imply models of resistance or complicity, the model of friction allows us to read novels as exploring possibilities of life and creativity within the worlds of neoliberal reification. We apply this model to contemporary autofiction: Kamers antikamers by Niña Weijers and How Should a Person Be? by Sheila Heti. Differing from idealist accounts of neoliberalism and a capitalist view of the subject as ‘entrepreneur of the self’, we engage a materialist approach that looks at the subject as a ‘gamer’ (Wark) whose affective and cognitive skills get reified into information. We conclude that both novels foreground the desire to find possibilities of life in affective attachments, which in their turn open up possibilities of difference and creativity in the context of neoliberal abstraction and alienation
The contribution of membrane vesicles to bacterial pathogenicity in cystic fibrosis infections and healthcare associated pneumonia
Almost all bacteria secrete spherical membranous nanoparticles, also referred to as membrane vesicles (MVs). A variety of MV types exist, ranging from 20 to 400 nm in diameter, each with their own formation routes. The most well-known vesicles are the outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) which are formed by budding from the outer membrane in Gram-negative bacteria. Recently, other types of MVs have been discovered and described, including outer-inner membrane vesicles (OIMVs) and cytoplasmic membrane vesicles (CMVs). The former are mainly formed by a process termed endolysin-triggered cell lysis in Gram-negative bacteria, the latter are formed by Gram-positive bacteria. MVs carry a wide range of cargo, such as nucleic acids, virulence factors and antibiotic resistance components. Moreover, they are involved in a multitude of biological processes that increase bacterial pathogenicity. In this review, we discuss the functional aspects of MVs secreted by bacteria associated with cystic fibrosis and nosocomial pneumonia. We mainly focus on how MVs are involved in virulence, antibiotic resistance, biofilm development and inflammation that consequently aid these bacterial infections
«Lope de Vega’s La hermosa Ester», a Tentative Reconstruction of Space in the Play
This article aims to describe and characterize space in Lope de Vega’s biblical play La hermosa Ester (1610). With the exception of two comic interludes found respectively in cuadros E and H and set in a hamlet near to the Persian capital, the remaining 11 cuadros are set in the city of Susa. The city is represented by a palace with a garden, a throne room and the king’s chambers) as well as an urban space (Jewish quarter, the favorite minister’s residence, and streets), both of which are linked by a square that is situated in front of the palace, a square that is of prime importance in the dramatic action. In contrast to Danielle Crivellari’s recent study on space in the work, this new proposed reconstruction, fashioned according to implicit stage directions, brings to light the dubious fragility of spacial elements when considering the play’s system of segmentation, that can find firmer bases in the metric
Simple oblivious transfer protocols compatible with Kummer and supersingular isogenies
The key exchange protocol of Diffie and Hellman, which can be defined for any group, has the special feature of using only exponentiations. In particular, it can also be instantiated in Kummer varieties, which are not groups, and in the post-quantum isogeny-based setting with the supersingular isogeny DH scheme of De Feo, Jao and Plût (SIDH).
In this article, we propose a new simple oblivious transfer (OT) protocol, based on the Diffie-Hellman key exchange, that only uses exponentiations; we also revisit the older Wu-Zhang-Wang scheme. Both protocols can be directly instantiated on fast Kummer varieties; more importantly, they can also be transposed in the post-quantum SIDH setting. The semantic security of our proposals relies on the hardness of non-standard versions of the (supersingular) Diffie-Hellman problem, that are investigated within this article. To the best of our knowledge, these protocols are the simplest secure discrete-log based OT schemes using only exponentiations, and the first isogeny-based OT schemes
