Scoop attachment makes helicopter recoveries easier and safer
Helicopter with rigid boom and net attachment performs rescue or recovery operations easily and safely. The attachment in the front of the helicopter scoops objects from difficult and otherwise inaccessible areas and pivots to the side hatch of the aircraft so that no crew member need leave the craft
LM lookangle program
Program computes the spacecraft look angles and the slant range, which define a spherical coordinate system located in the spacecraft body. The program is designed to reduce data from the Lunar Module Missions and to output desired information
Kinetic-energy absorber employs frictional force between mating cylinders
A kinetic energy absorbing device uses a series of coaxial, mating cylindrical surfaces. These surfaces have high frictional resistance to relative motion when axial impact forces are applied. The device is designed for safe deceleration of vehicles impacting on landing surfaces
Effects of hydrogen on ELI titanium alloy Ti-5Al-2.5Sn
Tensile tests on titanium alloy, following abrasion under hydrogen and temperature cycling, reveal lowered tensile strength, increased ductility, and no embrittlement. Fretting the metal on itself in flowing hydrogen or abrading with an iron file in flowing hydrogen produces titanium hydride
Venting of fission products and shielding in thermionic nuclear reactor systems
Most thermionic reactors are designed to allow the fission gases to escape out of the emitter. A scheme to allow the fission gases to escape is proposed. Because of the low activity of the fission products, this method should pose no radiation hazards
Schmitt trigger multivibrator
Schmitt trigger multivibrator circuit, capable of astable, monostable or bistable operation, incorporates an input circuit in conjunction with a Schmitt trigger circuit. The circuits form two output signal levels, are useful in switching circuit applications, initiates oscillations, and forms highly unsymmetrical wave forms
Use of the enzyme hexokinase for the reduction of inherent light levels
Use of enzyme hexokinase and glucose to reduce inherent light levels of ATP in luciferase composition
Space shuttle electrical power generation and reactant supply system
The design philosophy and development experience of fuel cell power generation and cryogenic reactant supply systems are reviewed, beginning with the state of technology at the conclusion of the Apollo Program. Technology advancements span a period of 10 years from initial definition phase to the most recent space transportation system (STS) flights. The development program encompassed prototype, verification, and qualification hardware, as well as post-STS-1 design improvements. Focus is on the problems encountered, the scientific and engineering approaches employed to meet the technological challenges, and the results obtained. Major technology barriers are discussed, and the evolving technology development paths are traced from their conceptual beginnings to the fully man-rated systems which are now an integral part of the shuttle vehicle
High intensity solar cell radiometer
Device can be employed under high intensity illumination conditions such as would occur in a close-solar-approach space mission or in monitoring high intensity lamps. Radiometer consists of silicon solar cells with thin semi-transparent coatings of aluminum deposited on the front surfaces to permit transmission of small percentage of light and reflect the remainder
