Center motions of nonoverlapping condensates coupled by long-range dipolar interaction in bilayer and multilayer stacks

We investigate the effect of anisotropic and long-range dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) on the center motions of nonoverlapping Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in bilayer and multilayer stacks. In the bilayer, it is shown analytically that while DDI plays no role in the in-phase modes of center motions of condensates, out-of-phase mode frequency (ωo\omega_o) depends crucially on the strength of DDI (ada_d). At the small-ada_d limit, ωo2(ad)ωo2(0)ad\omega_o^2(a_d)-\omega_o^2(0)\propto a_d. In the multilayer stack, transverse modes associated with center motions of coupled condensates are found to be optical phonon like. At the long-wavelength limit, phonon velocity is proportional to ad\sqrt a_d.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Supernova Neutrino-Nucleus Physics and the r-process

This talk reviews three inputs important to neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis in a supernova: 1) "standard" properties of the supernova neutrino flux, 2) effects of phenomena like neutrino oscillations on that flux, and 3) nuclear structure issues in estimating cross sections for neutrino-nucleus interactions. The resulting possibilities for neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis -- the neutrino-process -- in massive stars are discussed. This includes two relatively recent extensions of neutrino-process calculations to heavier nuclei, one focused on understanding the origin of 138La and 180Ta and the second on the effects following r-process freezeout. From calculations of the neutrino post-processing of the r-process distribution, limits can be placed on the neutrino fluence after freezeout and thus on the dynamic timescale for the expansion of the "hot bubble."Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, talked presented at "The r-process: The Astrophysical Origin of the Heavy Elements...

    Gas-to-hydraulic power converter

A gas piston driven hydraulic piston pump is described in which the gas cycle is of high efficiency by injecting the gas in slugs at the beginning of each power stroke. The hydraulic piston is disposed to operate inside the as piston, and the two pistons, both slidably but nonrotatably mounted, are coupled together with a rotating but non-sliding motion transfer ring extending into antifriction grooves in the sidewalls of the two pistons. To make the hydraulic piston move at a constant speed during constant hydraulic horsepower demand and thus exert a constant pressure on the hydraulic fluid, these grooves are machined with variable pitches and one is the opposite of the other, i.e., the gas piston groove increases in pitch during its power stroke while the hydraulic piston groove decreases. Any number of piston assembly sets may be used to obtain desired hydraulic horsepower

    X-ray determination of parts alignment

A method for determining the alignment of adjoining metal objects is provided. The method comprises producing an X-ray image of adjoining surfaces of the two metal objects. The X-ray beam is tangential to the point the surfaces are joined. The method is particularly applicable where the alignment of the two metal objects is not readily susceptible to visual inspection
