IMPLICATIONS OF TEMPERATURE-ACTIVATED POLYMER SEED COATING FOR CROP PRODUCTION IN THE NORTHERN CORN BELT
The value of an innovative new seed technology is evaluated in a discrete stochastic programming framework for a representative farm in the northern Corn Belt. Temperature-activated polymer coated seed has the potential to increase net returns by reducing yield loss due to delayed planting and by increasing the use of longer season varieties. A biophysical simulation model was used to estimate the impact of polymer coated seed on corn and soybean yields and on field day availability for five planting periods, two crop varieties and two tillage systems on two different soils under varying weather conditions. Results show that polymer coated seed increases net returns in corn by 3.65 per acre and in soybeans by 9.70 per acre.mathematical programming, biophysical simulation, corn, soybean, Crop Production/Industries,
Redundant electronic circuit provides fail-safe control
Circuit using dual control amplifiers and dual position demand potentiometers powered from separate sources is used for reliable hydraulic valve controller that prevents closure of valve when control circuits fail, and maintains valve control to close tolerance for more common modes of controller failure
Antenna Technology for QUASAT application
A hybrid growth version of the advanced Sunflower, or precision deployable, antenna was adopted as the configuration proposed for the QUASAT very long baseline interferometry mission. The antenna consists of rigid panels of graphite-epoxy facesheets covering aluminum honeycomb sandwich. The six main folding panels are hinged to a cantilevered support ring attached to the periphery of the center section. Six pairs of intermediate panels are located between these panels and are hinged to each other and to the main panels. The flight configuration, antenna weight, a mass properties, frequency, and contour tolerance are discussed. The advantages of the solid antenna surface cover an all-mesh contour are examined
Testing Luminescence Dating Methods for Small Samples from Very Young Fluvial Deposits
The impetus behind this study is to understand the sedimentological dynamics of very young fluvial systems in the Amazon River catchment and relate these to land use change and modern analogue studies of tidal rhythmites in the geologic record. Initial quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating feasibility studies have concentrated on spit and bar deposits in the Rio Tapajós. Many of these features have an appearance of freshly deposited pristine sand, and these observations and information from anecdotal evidence and LandSat imagery suggest an apparent decadal stability. The characteristics of OSL from small (~5 cm) sub-samples from ~65 cm by ~2 cm diameter vertical cores are quite remarkable. Signals from medium-sized aliquots (5 mm diameter) exhibit very high specific luminescence sensitivity, have excellent dose recovery and recycling, essentially independent of preheat, and show minimal heat transfer even at the highest preheats. These characteristics enable measurement of very small signals with reasonable precision and, using modified single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) approaches, equivalent doses as low as ~4 mGy can be obtained. Significant recuperation is observed for samples from two of the study sites and, in these instances, either the acceptance threshold was increased or growth curves were forced through the origin; recuperation is considered most likely to be a measurement artefact given the very small size of natural signals. Dose rates calculated from combined inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry/inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-MS/ICP-OES) and high-resolution gamma spectrometry range from ~0.3 to 0.5 mGya−1 , and OSL ages for features so far investigated range from 13 to 34 years to several 100 years. Sampled sands are rich in quartz and yields of 212–250 µm or 250–310 µm grains indicate high-resolution sampling at 1–2 cm intervals is possible. Despite the use of medium-sized aliquots to ensure the recovery of very dim natural OSL signals, these results demonstrate the potential of OSL for studying very young active fluvial processes in these settings
Biomimetic direction of arrival estimation for resolving front-back confusions in hearing aids
Sound sources at the same angle in front or behind a two-microphone array (e.g., bilateral hearing aids) produce the same time delay and two estimates for the direction of arrival: A front-back confusion. The auditory system can resolve this issue using head movements. To resolve front-back confusion for hearing-aid algorithms, head movement was measured using an inertial sensor. Successive time-delay estimates between the microphones are shifted clockwise and counterclockwise by the head movement between estimates and aggregated in two histograms. The histogram with the largest peak after multiple estimates predicted the correct hemifield for the source, eliminating the front-back confusions
Generation of defects and disorder from deeply quenching a liquid to form a solid
We show how deeply quenching a liquid to temperatures where it is linearly
unstable and the crystal is the equilibrium phase often produces crystalline
structures with defects and disorder. As the solid phase advances into the
liquid phase, the modulations in the density distribution created behind the
advancing solidification front do not necessarily have a wavelength that is the
same as the equilibrium crystal lattice spacing. This is because in a deep
enough quench the front propagation is governed by linear processes, but the
crystal lattice spacing is determined by nonlinear terms. The wavelength
mismatch can result in significant disorder behind the front that may or may
not persist in the latter stage dynamics. We support these observations by
presenting results from dynamical density functional theory calculations for
simple one- and two-component two-dimensional systems of soft core particles.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure
Mean-field dynamical density functional theory
We examine the out-of-equilibrium dynamical evolution of density profiles of
ultrasoft particles under time-varying external confining potentials in three
spatial dimensions. The theoretical formalism employed is the dynamical density
functional theory (DDFT) of Marini Bettolo Marconi and Tarazona [J. Chem. Phys.
{\bf 110}, 8032 (1999)], supplied by an equilibrium excess free energy
functional that is essentially exact. We complement our theoretical analysis by
carrying out extensive Brownian Dynamics simulations. We find excellent
agreement between theory and simulations for the whole time evolution of
density profiles, demonstrating thereby the validity of the DDFT when an
accurate equilibrium free energy functional is employed.Comment: 8 pagers, 4 figure
Callisto: a cryptographic approach to detecting serial perpetrators of sexual misconduct
Sexual misconduct is prevalent in workplace and education settings
but stigma and risk of further damage deter many victims from
seeking justice. Callisto, a non-profit that has created an online sexual assault reporting platform for college campuses, is expanding its
work to combat sexual assault and harassment in other industries.
In this new product, users will be invited to an online "matching
escrow" that will detect repeat perpetrators and create pathways
to support for victims. Users submit encrypted data about their
perpetrator, and this data can only be decrypted by the Callisto
Options Counselor (a lawyer), when another user enters the identity of the same perpetrator. If the perpetrator identities match,
both users will be put in touch independently with the Options
Counselor, who will connect them to each other (if appropriate) and
help them determine their best path towards justice. The client relationships with the Options Counselors are structured so that any
client-counselor communications would be privileged. A combination of client-side encryption, encrypted communication channels,
oblivious pseudo-random functions, key federation, and Shamir
Secret Sharing keep data confidential in transit, at rest, and during
the matching process with the guarantee that only the lawyer ever
has access to user submitted data, and even then only when a match
is identified.Accepted manuscrip
