Integrated health monitoring and controls for rocket engines
Current research in intelligent control systems at the Lewis Research Center is described in the context of a functional framework. The framework is applicable to a variety of reusable space propulsion systems for existing and future launch vehicles. It provides a 'road map' technology development to enable enhanced engine performance with increased reliability, durability, and maintainability. The framework hierarchy consists of a mission coordination level, a propulsion system coordination level, and an engine control level. Each level is described in the context of the Space Shuttle Main Engine. The concept of integrating diagnostics with control is discussed within the context of the functional framework. A distributed real time simulation testbed is used to realize and evaluate the functionalities in closed loop
Junctions and thin shells in general relativity using computer algebra I: The Darmois-Israel Formalism
We present the GRjunction package which allows boundary surfaces and
thin-shells in general relativity to be studied with a computer algebra system.
Implementing the Darmois-Israel thin shell formalism requires a careful
selection of definitions and algorithms to ensure that results are generated in
a straight-forward way. We have used the package to correctly reproduce a wide
variety of examples from the literature. We present several of these
verifications as a means of demonstrating the packages capabilities. We then
use GRjunction to perform a new calculation - joining two Kerr solutions with
differing masses and angular momenta along a thin shell in the slow rotation

Implementation of a model based fault detection and diagnosis for actuation faults of the Space Shuttle main engine
In a previous study, Guo, Merrill and Duyar, 1990, reported a conceptual development of a fault detection and diagnosis system for actuation faults of the space shuttle main engine. This study, which is a continuation of the previous work, implements the developed fault detection and diagnosis scheme for the real time actuation fault diagnosis of the space shuttle main engine. The scheme will be used as an integral part of an intelligent control system demonstration experiment at NASA Lewis. The diagnosis system utilizes a model based method with real time identification and hypothesis testing for actuation, sensor, and performance degradation faults
Lax pair tensors in arbitrary dimensions
A recipe is presented for obtaining Lax tensors for any n-dimensional
Hamiltonian system admitting a Lax representation of dimension n. Our approach
is to use the Jacobi geometry and coupling-constant metamorphosis to obtain a
geometric Lax formulation. We also exploit the results to construct integrable

Double-bounce domain-wall in Einstein-Yang-Mills-Scalar black holes
We find Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) black hole solutions endowed with massless
scalar hair in the presence of a potential as function
of the scalar field . Choosing constant (or zero)
sets the scalar field to vanish leaving us with the EYM black holes. Our class
of black hole solutions is new so that they do not asymptote in general to any
known limits. Particular case is given, however, which admits an asymptotically
anti de Sitter limit in dimensional spacetime. The role of the potential
in making double bounces (i.e. both a minimum and
maximum radii) on a Domain Wall (DW) universe is highlighted.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, final version for publication in EPJ
The Gravitational Hamiltonian in the Presence of Non-Orthogonal Boundaries
This paper generalizes earlier work on Hamiltonian boundary terms by omitting
the requirement that the spacelike hypersurfaces intersect the
timelike boundary orthogonally. The expressions for the action and
Hamiltonian are calculated and the required subtraction of a background
contribution is discussed. The new features of a Hamiltonian formulation with
non-orthogonal boundaries are then illustrated in two examples.Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure, LaTeX. The action is altered to include a corner
term which results in a different value for the non-orthogonal term. An

Stability of Transparent Spherically Symmetric Thin Shells and Wormholes
The stability of transparent spherically symmetric thin shells (and
wormholes) to linearized spherically symmetric perturbations about static
equilibrium is examined. This work generalizes and systematizes previous
studies and explores the consequences of including the cosmological constant.
The approach shows how the existence (or not) of a domain wall dominates the

Gravitational Collapse of Dust with a Cosmological Constant
The recent analysis of Markovic and Shapiro on the effect of a cosmological
constant on the evolution of a spherically symmetric homogeneous dust ball is
extended to include the inhomogeneous and degenerate cases. The histories are

X-ray tomography characterization of density gradient aerogel in laser targets
The low-density solid laser target characterization studies begun with the SkyScan 1074 computer microtomograph (CMT) [1, 2] are now continued with higher resolution of SkyScan 1174. The research is particularly focused on the possibility to obtain, control and measure precisely the gradient density polymers for laser target production. Repeatability of the samples and possibility to obtain stable gradients are analysed. The measurements were performed on the mm-scale divinyl benzene (DVB) rods.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
