Global oceanic emission of ammonia: constraints from seawater and atmospheric observations
Current global inventories of ammonia emissions identify the ocean as the largest natural
source. This source depends on seawater pH, temperature, and the concentration of total seawater
ammonia (NHx(sw)), which reflects a balance between remineralization of organic matter, uptake by
plankton, and nitrification. Here we compare [NHx(sw)] from two global ocean biogeochemical models
(BEC and COBALT) against extensive ocean observations. Simulated [NHx(sw)] are generally biased high.
Improved simulation can be achieved in COBALT by increasing the plankton affinity for NHx within observed
ranges. The resulting global ocean emissions is 2.5 TgN a−1, much lower than current literature values
(7–23 TgN a−1), including the widely used Global Emissions InitiAtive (GEIA) inventory (8 TgN a−1). Such
a weak ocean source implies that continental sources contribute more than half of atmospheric NHx over
most of the ocean in the Northern Hemisphere. Ammonia emitted from oceanic sources is insufficient to
neutralize sulfate aerosol acidity, consistent with observations. There is evidence over the Equatorial Pacific
for a missing source of atmospheric ammonia that could be due to photolysis of marine organic nitrogen at
the ocean surface or in the atmosphere. Accommodating this possible missing source yields a global ocean
emission of ammonia in the range 2–5 TgN a−1, comparable in magnitude to other natural sources from
open fires and soils
Measurement of Permanent Electric Dipole Moments of Charged Hadrons in Storage Rings
Permanent Electric Dipole Moments (EDMs) of elementary particles violate two
fundamental symmetries: time reversal invariance (T) and parity (P). Assuming
the CPT theorem this implies CP-violation. The CP-violation of the Standard
Model is orders of magnitude too small to be observed experimentally in EDMs in
the foreseeable future. It is also way too small to explain the asymmetry in
abundance of matter and anti-matter in our universe. Hence, other mechanisms of
CP violation outside the realm of the Standard Model are searched for and could
result in measurable EDMs.
Up to now most of the EDM measurements were done with neutral particles. With
new techniques it is now possible to perform dedicated EDM experiments with
charged hadrons at storage rings where polarized particles are exposed to an
electric field. If an EDM exists the spin vector will experience a torque
resulting in change of the original spin direction which can be determined with
the help of a polarimeter. Although the principle of the measurement is simple,
the smallness of the expected effect makes this a challenging experiment
requiring new developments in various experimental areas.
Complementary efforts to measure EDMs of proton, deuteron and light nuclei
are pursued at Brookhaven National Laboratory and at Forschungszentrum Juelich
with an ultimate goal to reach a sensitivity of 10^{-29} e cm.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

Low rate of rhesus immunization from rh- incompatible blood transfusions during liver and heart transplant surgery
Transfusion of one unit or more of Rh-positive red blood cells normally causes circulating anti-D antibody to appear 2-6 months later in 80-95% of Rh persons. We asked whether transplant immunosuppression with cyclosporine and corticosteroids affects Rh immuniza¬tion. Nineteen Rh" liver, heart, and heart-lung transplant recipients received 3—153 (median: 10) units of Rh+ RBCs at surgery and were tested for anti-D >2 months later. Three patients developed anti-D at 11—15 days; one may have had an unusually rapid primary immune response and two were secondary to previous exposure by pregnancy. None of the other 16 patients had anti-D when tested 2.5-51 months later (13 patients, >11.5 months). This low rate of Rhesus immunization in association with cyclosporine immunosuppression allows greater flexibility in meeting the transfusion needs of Rh- liver and heart transplant patients. Caution is still advised in young females and in patients who may have been previously exposed to Rh+ RBCs by transfusion or by pregnancy prior to the availability of perinatal Rh immune globulin twenty years ago. Multiple uncontrolled conditions and blood pressure medication intensification: an observational study
Abstract Background Multiple uncontrolled medical conditions may act as competing demands for clinical decision making. We hypothesized that multiple uncontrolled cardiovascular risk factors would decrease blood pressure (BP) medication intensification among uncontrolled hypertensive patients. Methods We observed 946 encounters at two VA primary care clinics from May through August 2006. After each encounter, clinicians recorded BP medication intensification (BP medication was added or titrated). Demographic, clinical, and laboratory information were collected from the medical record. We examined BP medication intensification by presence and control of diabetes and/or hyperlipidemia. 'Uncontrolled' was defined as hemoglobin A1c ≥ for diabetes, BP ≥ 140/90 mmHg (≥ 130/80 mmHg if diabetes present) for hypertension, and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) ≥ 130 mg/dl (≥ 100 mg/dl if diabetes present) for hyperlipidemia. Hierarchical regression models accounted for patient clustering and adjusted medication intensification for age, systolic BP, and number of medications. Results Among 387 patients with uncontrolled hypertension, 51.4% had diabetes (25.3% were uncontrolled) and 73.4% had hyperlipidemia (22.7% were uncontrolled). The BP medication intensification rate was 34.9% overall, but higher in individuals with uncontrolled diabetes and uncontrolled hyperlipidemia: 52.8% overall and 70.6% if systolic BP ≥ 10 mmHg above goal. Intensification rates were lowest if diabetes or hyperlipidemia were controlled, lower than if diabetes or hyperlipidemia were not present. Multivariable adjustment yielded similar results. Conclusions The presence of uncontrolled diabetes and hyperlipidemia was associated with more guideline-concordant hypertension care, particularly if BP was far from goal. Academic Performance and Behavioral Patterns
Identifying the factors that influence academic performance is an essential
part of educational research. Previous studies have documented the importance
of personality traits, class attendance, and social network structure. Because
most of these analyses were based on a single behavioral aspect and/or small
sample sizes, there is currently no quantification of the interplay of these
factors. Here, we study the academic performance among a cohort of 538
undergraduate students forming a single, densely connected social network. Our
work is based on data collected using smartphones, which the students used as
their primary phones for two years. The availability of multi-channel data from
a single population allows us to directly compare the explanatory power of
individual and social characteristics. We find that the most informative
indicators of performance are based on social ties and that network indicators
result in better model performance than individual characteristics (including
both personality and class attendance). We confirm earlier findings that class
attendance is the most important predictor among individual characteristics.
Finally, our results suggest the presence of strong homophily and/or peer
effects among university students
Genetic Determinants of Circulating Sphingolipid Concentrations in European Populations
Sphingolipids have essential roles as structural components of cell membranes and in cell signalling, and disruption of their metabolism causes several diseases, with diverse neurological, psychiatric, and metabolic consequences. Increasingly, variants within a few of the genes that encode enzymes involved in sphingolipid metabolism are being associated with complex disease phenotypes. Direct experimental evidence supports a role of specific sphingolipid species in several common complex chronic disease processes including atherosclerotic plaque formation, myocardial infarction (MI), cardiomyopathy, pancreatic beta-cell failure, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Therefore, sphingolipids represent novel and important intermediate phenotypes for genetic analysis, yet little is known about the major genetic variants that influence their circulating levels in the general population. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) between 318,237 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and levels of circulating sphingomyelin (SM), dihydrosphingomyelin (Dih-SM), ceramide (Cer), and glucosylceramide (GluCer) single lipid species (33 traits); and 43 matched metabolite ratios measured in 4,400 subjects from five diverse European populations. Associated variants (32) in five genomic regions were identified with genome-wide significant corrected p-values ranging down to 9.08 x 10(-66). The strongest associations were observed in or near 7 genes functionally involved in ceramide biosynthesis and trafficking: SPTLC3, LASS4, SGPP1, ATP10D, and FADS1-3. Variants in 3 loci (ATP10D, FADS3, and SPTLC3) associate with MI in a series of three German MI studies. An additional 70 variants across 23 candidate genes involved in sphingolipid-metabolizing pathways also demonstrate association (p = 10(-4) or less). Circulating concentrations of several key components in sphingolipid metabolism are thus under strong genetic control, and variants in these loci can be tested for a role in the development of common cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, and psychiatric diseases
Visual ecology of aphids – a critical review on the role of colours in host finding
We review the rich literature on behavioural responses of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) to stimuli of different colours. Only in one species there are adequate physiological data on spectral sensitivity to explain behaviour crisply in mechanistic terms.
Because of the great interest in aphid responses to coloured targets from an evolutionary, ecological and applied perspective, there is a substantial need to expand these studies to more species of aphids, and to quantify spectral properties of stimuli rigorously. We show that aphid responses to colours, at least for some species, are likely based on a specific colour opponency mechanism, with positive input from the green domain of the spectrum and negative input from the blue and/or UV region.
We further demonstrate that the usual yellow preference of aphids encountered in field experiments is not a true colour preference but involves additional brightness effects. We discuss the implications for agriculture and sensory ecology, with special respect to the recent debate on autumn leaf colouration. We illustrate that recent evolutionary theories concerning aphid–tree interactions imply far-reaching assumptions on aphid responses to colours
that are not likely to hold. Finally we also discuss the
implications for developing and optimising strategies
of aphid control and monitoring
