Recent CMS searches for exotic phenomena beyond the Standard Model
The results of several recent CMS searches for exotic phenomena beyond the
Standard Model are presented in this talk. Two searches look for new physics in
a final state with a vector boson and missing transverse energy. Three searches
target massive resonances decaying to a Higgs boson and a vector boson.
Finally, preliminary results are presented for the first CMS search for exotic
phenomena using TeV data, the search for dijet resonances.Comment: Presentation at the DPF 2015 Meeting of the American Physical Society

Thinking outside the beamspot: Other SUSY searches at the LHC (long-lived particles and R-parity violation)
Supersymmetric particles that are long-lived or violate R-parity could evade
many conventional searches for supersymmetry. This talk presents the latest
results of searches for supersymmetry with long-lived particles or R-parity
violation performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations using 20
fb of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV
delivered by the LHC.Comment: Submitted to Proceedings of Rencontres de Moriond QCD 201

Shock-operated valve would automatically protect fluid systems
Glandless valve shuts down high-pressure fluid systems when severe shock from an explosion or earthquake occurs. The valve uses a pendulum to support the valve closure plug in the open position. When jarred, the valve body is moved relative to the pendulum and the plug support is displaced, allowing the plug to seat and be held by spring pressure
Origins of NASA names
Names are selected for NASA spaceflight projects and programs from various sources. Some have their foundations in mythology and astrology or legend and folklore. Some have historic connotations; others are based on a description of their mission, often resulting in an acronym. Included are names of launch vehicles, spacecraft, manned spaceflight programs, sounding rockets, and NASA field installations. This study is limited to names of approved projects through 1974; it does not include names of numerous projects which have been or are being studied or projects that were canceled or postponed before reaching actual flight
Random matrices and quantum spin chains
Random matrix ensembles are introduced that respect the local tensor
structure of Hamiltonians describing a chain of distinguishable spin-half
particles with nearest-neighbour interactions. We prove a central limit theorem
for the density of states when , giving explicit bounds on
the rate of approach to the limit. Universality within a class of probability
measures and the extension to more general interaction geometries are
established. The level spacing distributions of the Gaussian Orthogonal,
Unitary and Symplectic Ensembles are observed numerically for the energy levels
in these ensembles.Comment: Updated figures, as accepted in 'Markov Processes and Related Fields'

Timing Control System
A timing control system is disclosed which is particularly useful in connection with simulated mortar shells. Special circuitry is provided to assure that the shell does not over shoot, but rather detonates early in case of an improper condition; this ensures that ground personnel will not be harmed by a delayed detonation. The system responds to an externally applied frequency control code which is configured to avoid any confusion between different control modes. A premature detonation routine is entered in case an improper time-setting signal is entered, or if the shell is launched before completion of the time-setting sequence. Special provisions are also made for very early launch situations and improper detonator connections. An alternate abort mode is provided to discharge the internal power supply without a detonation in a manner that can be externally monitored, thereby providing a mechanism for non-destructive testing. The abort mode also accelerates the timing function for rapid testing
