Lexical knowledge boosts statistically-driven speech segmentation
The hypothesis that known words can serve as anchors for discovering new words in connected speech has computational and empirical support. However, evidence for how the bootstrapping effect of known words interacts with other mechanisms of lexical acquisition, such as statistical learning, is incomplete. In 3 experiments, we investigated the consequences of introducing a known word in an artificial language with no segmentation cues other than cross-syllable transitional probabilities. We started with an artificial language containing 4 trisyllabic novel words and observed standard above-chance performance in a subsequent recognition memory task. We then replaced 1 of the 4 novel words with a real word (tomorrow) and noted improved segmentation of the other 3 novel words. This improvement was maintained when the real word was a different length to the novel words (philosophy), ruling out an explanation based on metrical expectation. The improvement was also maintained when the word was added to the 4 original novel words rather than replacing 1 of them. Together, these results show that known words in an otherwise meaningless stream serve as anchors for discovering new words. In interpreting the results, we contrast a mechanism where the lexical boost is merely the consequence of attending to the edges of known words, with a mechanism where known words enhance sensitivity to transitional probabilities more generally
Predicting the long-term impact of antiretroviral therapy scale-up on population incidence of tuberculosis.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on long-term population-level tuberculosis disease (TB) incidence in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: We used a mathematical model to consider the effect of different assumptions about life expectancy and TB risk during long-term ART under alternative scenarios for trends in population HIV incidence and ART coverage. RESULTS: All the scenarios we explored predicted that the widespread introduction of ART would initially reduce population-level TB incidence. However, many modelled scenarios projected a rebound in population-level TB incidence after around 20 years. This rebound was predicted to exceed the TB incidence present before ART scale-up if decreases in HIV incidence during the same period were not sufficiently rapid or if the protective effect of ART on TB was not sustained. Nevertheless, most scenarios predicted a reduction in the cumulative TB incidence when accompanied by a relative decline in HIV incidence of more than 10% each year. CONCLUSIONS: Despite short-term benefits of ART scale-up on population TB incidence in sub-Saharan Africa, longer-term projections raise the possibility of a rebound in TB incidence. This highlights the importance of sustaining good adherence and immunologic response to ART and, crucially, the need for effective HIV preventive interventions, including early widespread implementation of ART

Objectives: This study builds on research undertaken by Bernasco and Nieuwbeerta and explores the generalizability of a theoretically derived offender target selection model in three cross-national study regions.
Methods: Taking a discrete spatial choice approach, we estimate the impact of both environment- and offender-level factors on residential burglary placement in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Combining cleared burglary data from all study regions in a single statistical model, we make statistical comparisons between environments.
Results: In all three study regions, the likelihood an offender selects an area for burglary is positively influenced by proximity to their home, the proportion of easily accessible targets, and the total number of targets available. Furthermore, in two of the three study regions, juvenile offenders under the legal driving age are significantly more influenced by target proximity than adult offenders. Post hoc tests indicate the magnitudes of these impacts vary significantly between study regions.
Conclusions: While burglary target selection strategies are consistent with opportunity-based explanations of offending, the impact of environmental context is significant. As such, the approach undertaken in combining observations from multiple study regions may aid criminology scholars in assessing the generalizability of observed findings across multiple environments
The detection of the imprint of filaments on cosmic microwave background lensing
Galaxy redshift surveys, such as 2dF, SDSS, 6df, GAMA and VIPERS, have shown
that the spatial distribution of matter forms a rich web, known as the cosmic
web. The majority of galaxy survey analyses measure the amplitude of galaxy
clustering as a function of scale, ignoring information beyond a small number
of summary statistics. Since the matter density field becomes highly
non-Gaussian as structure evolves under gravity, we expect other statistical
descriptions of the field to provide us with additional information. One way to
study the non-Gaussianity is to study filaments, which evolve non-linearly from
the initial density fluctuations produced in the primordial Universe. In our
study, we report the first detection of CMB (Cosmic Microwave Background)
lensing by filaments and we apply a null test to confirm our detection.
Furthermore, we propose a phenomenological model to interpret the detected
signal and we measure how filaments trace the matter distribution on large
scales through filament bias, which we measure to be around 1.5. Our study
provides a new scope to understand the environmental dependence of galaxy
formation. In the future, the joint analysis of lensing and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich
observations might reveal the properties of `missing baryons', the vast
majority of the gas which resides in the intergalactic medium and has so far
evaded most observations
An Optical Counterpart to the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 4U 0142+61
The energy source of the anomalous X-ray pulsars is not well understood,
hence their designation as anomalous. Unlike binary X-ray pulsars, no
companions are seen, so the energy cannot be supplied by accretion of matter
from a companion star. The loss of rotational energy, which powers radio
pulsars, is insufficient to power AXPs. Two models are generally considered:
accretion from a large disk left over from the birth process, or decay of a
very strong magnetic field (10^15 G) associated with a 'magnetar'. The lack of
counterparts at other wavelengths has hampered progress in our understanding of
these objects. Here, we present deep optical observations of the field around
4U 0142+61, which is the brightest AXP in X-rays. We find an object with
peculiar optical colours at the position of the X-ray source, and argue that it
is the optical counterpart. The optical emission is too faint to admit the
presence of a large accretion disk, but may be consistent with magnetospheric

Synthetic Lethality of Chk1 Inhibition Combined with p53 and/or p21 Loss During a DNA Damage Response in Normal and Tumor Cells
Cell cycle checkpoints ensure genome integrity and are frequently compromised in human cancers. A therapeutic strategy being explored takes advantage of checkpoint defects in p53-deficient tumors in order to sensitize them to DNA-damaging agents by eliminating Chk1-mediated checkpoint responses. Using mouse models, we demonstrated that p21 is a key determinant of how cells respond to the combination of DNA damage and Chk1 inhibition (combination therapy) in normal cells as well as in tumors. Loss of p21 sensitized normal cells to the combination therapy much more than did p53 loss and the enhanced lethality was partially blocked by CDK inhibition. In addition, basal pools of p21 (p53 independent) provided p53 null cells with protection from the combination therapy. Our results uncover a novel p53-independent function for p21 in protecting cells from the lethal effects of DNA damage followed by Chk1 inhibition. As p21 levels are low in a significant fraction of colorectal tumors, they are predicted to be particularly sensitive to the combination therapy. Percentile Queries in Multi-Dimensional Markov Decision Processes
Markov decision processes (MDPs) with multi-dimensional weights are useful to
analyze systems with multiple objectives that may be conflicting and require
the analysis of trade-offs. We study the complexity of percentile queries in
such MDPs and give algorithms to synthesize strategies that enforce such
constraints. Given a multi-dimensional weighted MDP and a quantitative payoff
function , thresholds (one per dimension), and probability thresholds
, we show how to compute a single strategy to enforce that for all
dimensions , the probability of outcomes satisfying is at least . We consider classical quantitative payoffs from
the literature (sup, inf, lim sup, lim inf, mean-payoff, truncated sum,
discounted sum). Our work extends to the quantitative case the multi-objective

Probing anomalous tbW couplings in single-top production using top polarization at the Large Hadron Collider
We study the sensitivity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to anomalous tbW
couplings in single-top production in association with a W^- boson followed by
semileptonic decay of the top. We calculate top polarization and the effects of
these anomalous couplings to it at two centre-of-mass (cm) energies of 7 TeV
and 14 TeV. As a measure of top polarization, we look at various laboratory
frame distributions of its decay products, viz., lepton angular and energy
distributions and b-quark angular distributions, without requiring
reconstruction of the rest frame of the top, and study the effect of anomalous
couplings on these distributions. We construct certain asymmetries to study the
sensitivity of these distributions to anomalous tbW couplings. We find that
1\sigma limits on real and imaginary parts of the dominant anomalous coupling
Ref_{2R} which may be obtained by utilizing these asymmetries at the LHC with
cm energy of 14 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 10 fb^{-1} will be
significantly better than the expectations from direct measurements of cross
sections and some other variables at the LHC and over an order of magnitude

Managing lifestyle change to reduce coronary risk: a synthesis of qualitative research on peoples’ experiences
Background
Coronary heart disease is an incurable condition. The only approach known to slow its progression is healthy lifestyle change and concordance with cardio-protective medicines. Few people fully succeed in these daily activities so potential health improvements are not fully realised. Little is known about peoples’ experiences of managing lifestyle change. The aim of this study was to synthesise qualitative research to explain how participants make lifestyle change after a cardiac event and explore this within the wider illness experience.
Methods
A qualitative synthesis was conducted drawing upon the principles of meta-ethnography. Qualitative studies were identified through a systematic search of 7 databases using explicit criteria. Key concepts were identified and translated across studies. Findings were discussed and diagrammed during a series of audiotaped meetings.
Results
The final synthesis is grounded in findings from 27 studies, with over 500 participants (56% male) across 8 countries. All participants experienced a change in their self-identity from what was ‘familiar’ to ‘unfamiliar’. The transition process involved ‘finding new limits and a life worth living’ , ‘finding support for self’ and ‘finding a new normal’. Analyses of these concepts led to the generation of a third order construct, namely an ongoing process of ‘reassessing past, present and future lives’ as participants considered their changed identity. Participants experienced a strong urge to get back to ‘normal’. Support from family and friends could enable or constrain life change and lifestyle changes. Lifestyle change was but one small part of a wider ‘life’ change that occurred.
Conclusions
The final synthesis presents an interpretation, not evident in the primary studies, of a person-centred model to explain how lifestyle change is situated within ‘wider’ life changes. The magnitude of individual responses to a changed health status varied. Participants experienced distress as their notion of self identity shifted and emotions that reflected the various stages of the grief process were evident in participants’ accounts. The process of self-managing lifestyle took place through experiential learning; the level of engagement with lifestyle change reflected an individual’s unique view of the balance needed to manage ‘realistic change’ whilst leading to a life that was perceived as ‘worth living’. Findings highlight the importance of providing person centred care that aligns with both psychological and physical dimensions of recovery which are inextricably linked
