Extreme Sports: Are They Worth The Risk?
Overview: Broken bones, head trauma, shark attacks, and casualties all while playing the sport you love. Is it worth it? With extreme sports come extreme risks. There are many controversies over these sports as to whether they are ethical or not and why anybody with the right mindset would consider participating in such events. These sports often involve high speed, great heights, a high level of physical exertion, and highly specialized gear or spectacular stunts. Some popular and quickly growing extreme sports in today’s society are snowboarding, speed and freestyle skiing, surfing, sky diving, mountain climbing, and wake boarding. Many researchers, psychologists, and sociologists look for the reasons athletes choose to participate in these high risk sports rather than more traditional sports such as baseball and football. A few researchers argue that there are specific demographics that are more likely to engage in these activities. Also, they believe that people with certain personality traits are more likely to participate in high risk activities. My goal is to better understand why people choose to participate in such high risk sports even though they carry extreme risks with them. After recognizing the dangers, people are able to decrease the likelihood of those risks by educating the public, using proper safety equipment, and implementing emergency plans in case dangerous situations outbreak.
The athletes who participate in extreme sports often times value their specific and individual ways of practicing them. In his memoir, Bode, Bode Miller emphasizes his passion to speed ski because he uses his own methods of performing to be the fastest skier in each competition—plain and simple. Knowing which group of people is more likely to participate in high risk sports not only benefits the public’s curiosities, but it also benefits the business side of the respective sports. By determining who is most interested in these types of sports, companies can make campaigns and advertisements that are compelling to that specific demographic and ultimately increase their economic revenues. Due to the reputation of extreme sports, they are often times viewed as daredevil activities with unnecessary risks. That being said, a lot of negative speculation revolving around the sport is common in today’s society. Various news stories, movies, and other sources in the media help spread the impression of the risks and dangers of the sports. Although the public hears mostly about all the negative effects of extreme sports, there are a variety of ways to decrease one’s risk of injuries through proper precautions and practice. In saying that, there are also many benefits to extreme sports as seen in Bode Miller’s memoir, as well as interviews with other extreme sport athletes

Effect of red betel (Piper crocatum Ruiz and Pav) leaves extract on blood glucose levels and ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI) among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Background: Hyperglycemia often occurs in DM patients even though they have received pharmacological therapy, thus encouraging people to consume herbal medicines. The dosage of herbal therapy consumed by the community is not appropriate, only the dosage of community assumptions, resulting in negative impacts. Chronic hyperglycemia causes worsening of the Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) score. Giving red betel extract with the right dose can be a solution, because red betel extract contains flavonoids that can inhibit y-amylase and y-glucosidase so that the body can control blood sugar levels and improve ABPI scores.
Purpose: To determine effectiveness of red betel extract on fasting blood sugar levels and ABPI.
Method: A quasy experiment approach, specially focusing on pretest and posttest group. The study took place from October-November 2024, in Padangsari and Srondol Health Centers, Semarang. The independent variable was red betel leaf extractthe dependent variables is fasting blood sugar levels and ABPI. Using purposive sampling and Lemeshow formula, 70 respondents were selected which were divided into 2 groups, who met specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Analysis proceeded with a univariate test to determine the frequency distribution of respondent’s characteristics, followed by bivariate analysis using man whitney test.
Results: Red betel leaf extract significantly reduced blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with an intervention value of 112.83 ± 15.227 compared to control of 191.46 ± 72277 with a large Cohen's d effect of 0.87 and increased the value of the Ankle Brachial Pressure Index or ABPI in the intervention group by 0.855 ± 0.045 compared to control by 0.674 ± 0.094 with a large d effect of 1.22 These findings suggest that red beet extract has potential as an adjuvant therapy in glycemic control and improvement of peripheral circulation.
Conclusion: Betel leaf extract has been shown to be effective in reducing fasting blood sugar levels and improving Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) scores in patients with type II diabetes mellitus
Supplementary Feeding Treatment toward Tuberculosis Patients in The Community
Tuberculosis patients, who are taking anti-tuberculosis drugs, often have problems in the gastrointestinal system such as anorexia, nausea and vomiting. So, they will tend to have problems with poor nutritional status and weight loss. This research aims to identify supplementary feeding treatment toward body weight gain of tuberculosis patients in the community. The research method uses quasi experimental with pre-post test with non-equivalent control group design. The population was tuberculosis patients who participated in tuberculosis treatment program in the Banyumas Community Health Center. The sample was 46 tuberculosis patients both male and female with aged 15-65 years, joint with the DOTS program and were taking anti tuberculosis drugs. The treatment provided were providing supplementary nutrition and assisting to take tuberculosis drugs. Research data collection was obtained through questionnaire. The results showed there was a significant difference in the level of weight gain between the intervention and control group. The mean pretest body weight in the intervention group was 48,43 and the post-test was 52,62 with p value = 0,000. On the other hand, there was no significant difference body weight in control group, whereas pre-test was 48,65 and post-test was 48,61 with p value = 0,933. Therefore, the supplementary feeding must be given for tuberculosis patients in the community as supportive therapy to maintain their quality of life.
Aid, policies and growth in sub-Saharan Africa
This thesis investigates the impact of foreign aid in 46 sub-Saharan countries. Furthermore, this study also examines what effect the interaction between policies and aid has on growth. This is done through a panel based OLS regression model on the years of 1996-2011. The main findings are that there’s not a clear answer to whether aid has a significant effect on growth and that the result depends somewhat on specification. Regarding the interaction between policies and aid, this study does not find any significant evidence for its effect on growth
Faktor-faktor yang Mempengaruhi Kehamilan Remaja
The issue of sexuality in adolescence is a conversation that is always interesting to anyone. But sexuality in adolescents can have detrimental consequences for the teenager himself, family and society. The consequences caused by sexuality in adolescents include infectious diseases such as venereal diseases, HIV or AIDS, unwanted pregnancy. For this reason, researchers want to know more about "Factors That Affect Teenage Pregnancy. The type of research used is field research. held in Baturraden District, Banyumas Regency. The respondents of the study were community leaders, village heads, adolescents who experienced pregnancy, parents of adolescents who experienced pregnancy and adolescents who did not experience pregnancy using the interview data collection method. The causes of teenage pregnancy are the influence of the media, promiscuity, environment, use of misinformation, early marriage, juvenile delinquency, cultural factors: low education, unhealthy associations, low economy, lack of knowledge about religion, trial and error, lack of knowledge about reproductive health, already entering marriageable age, helping parents who are economically deprived, unwanted pregnancy and avoiding adultery. Community leaders, midwives, cadres and families are encouraged to assist pregnant adolescents and adolescents to seek the right information so that their pregnancy is smooth and healthy
Double-component convection due to different boundary conditions in an infinite slot diversely oriented to the gravity
Onset of small-amplitude oscillatory and both small- and finite-amplitude
steady double-component convection arising due to component different boundary
conditions in an infinite slot is studied for various slot orientations to the
gravity. The main focus is on two compensating background gradients of the
components. The physical mechanisms underlying steady and oscillatory
convection are analyzed from the perspective of a universally consistent
understanding of the effects of different boundary conditions.Comment: V2: Submitted to and published in Annals of Physics. 59 manuscript
