A Novel Western Multi-blotting Device

poster abstractBlotting is a common technique widely used for molecular analysis in life sciences. The Western blot, in particular, is a process of transferring protein samples from a polyacrylamide gel to a blotting membrane and detecting the levels of specific proteins through reactions with primary and secondary antibodies. The state-of-the-art of Western blotting usually generates one blotting membrane per gel. However, multiple copies of blots are useful in many applications. Two blotting copies from a single protein gel, for instance, can be used for identifying a total amount of proteins of interest as well as its specific subpopulation level such as a phosphorylated isoform. To achieve this multi-blotting operation from a single gel, we modified a blotting procedure and developed a novel blotting device. The device consisted of a multi-anode plate and a microcontroller. It was designed to generate a well-controlled electrophoretic voltage profile, which allowed a quasi-uniform transfer of proteins of any size. The prototype device was built and its operation procedure was described. The experimental results clearly supported the notion that the described device was able to achieve 5 blotting from a single gel and reduce time and cost for protein analysis

Implikasi keterlibatan audiens belia dengan kempen perpaduan di televisyen: perbandingan belia melayu dan bukan melayu

Masyarakat Malaysia khususnya golongan belia sering disajikan dengan kempen-kempen perpaduan di saluran televisyen dalam negara. Ini adalah kerana televisyen dikatakan antara saluran media yang sangat berpengaruh dalam menyampaikan maklumat. Namun sejauh manakah saluran ini berkesan dalam penyampaian maklumat kempen perpaduan? Kertas ini membincangkan sejauh mana implikasi keterlibatan audiens belia di tahap pemikiran, pengetahuan dan tingkah laku setelah menonton kempen perpaduan di televisyen Malaysia dengan melihat perbandingan di antara kumpulan belia Melayu dengan belia bukan Melayu.Implikasi keterlibatan audiens belia ditakrifkan sebagai situasi di mana belia memahami dan melibatkan diri dengan kempen-kempen perpaduan yang disiarkan menerusi televisyen Malaysia. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Seramai 513 orang belia di sekitar Lembah Klang dan berumur antara 15 hingga 25 tahun telah terlibat dalam kajian ini. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa terdapat perkaitan yang signifikan di antara implikasi keterlibatan audiens belia di tahap pemikiran dan perasaan sahaja dengan kempen-kempen perpaduan di televisyen Malaysia di antara kumpulan belia Melayu dengan kumpulan belia bukan Melayu. Kajian juga menunjukkan bahawa televisyen masih lagi berperanan sebagai medium komunikasi bagi menyemai semangat perpaduan antara kaum khususnya golongan belia namun strategi penyampaian mungkin boleh diperkemas lagi dari masa ke semasa

The challenges oh 1 Malaysia and the reality of youth's involvement with the unity campaign on television.

Today’s youth are the ones who are exposed to the development of ICT. Therefore, the print and electronic media are the main communicators as sources of information for youths. The question is, how do these sources of information use these channels for the benefit of youth’s education? This article is the discussion about the challenges to realize the succession of 1Malaysia based on the research founding by Nobaya et al., (2008) related to youth’s involvement with the unity campaign being shown through television channels. The discussion about the succession of 1Malaysia in relation to the youth generation is an issue that should be given serious attention by all in tandem with the realization that this generation is the back up for the current nation’s leaders who will determine the stability and the continuation of a harmonious ethnic relationship in a multi racial society for the nation’s future. The question whether they understand or not the real meaning in developing 1Malaysia has to be critically analyzed and discussed. Even though the basic research data by Nobaya et al. (2008) did not directly measure youth’s understanding about the succession of 1Malaysia but this research will measure the level of youth’s involvement with the unity campaign shown through Malaysian television channels, which will reflect the 1Malaysia practice level nowadays within the youth’s generation in the aspect of unity. The findings show Malaysia’s youth understand and embrace the unity campaign being aired but lack in performing the behavior that could spurt unity’s growth. The discussion in this article is hoped to shape the thinking of all parties in enriching the succession of 1Malaysia which is fundamentally based on unity’s practice in a multi cultural society especially in the youth’s generation

Creating place-based learning experiences as a curriculum enactment approach: a case study of selected business studies teachers' practices in Papua New Guinea

John Wanis Tapura explored how business studies teachers in Papua New Guinea (PNG) perceive and enact the national curriculum goals, policies, and resources in terms of place-based education aspirations. John found that teachers based their curriculum aims and practices on their lived experiences in and out of school, rather than the intentions of the national curriculum. In terms of translating curriculum policy, teachers were unfamiliar with the national curriculum statement and framework, including place-based learning. John recommended that curriculum as autobiography, teacher agency, and teacher beliefs and the teachers lived experiences of the 'place' are some important aspects of curriculum implementation with place-based learning considerations that PNG needs to support teachers to adopt for improved enacted curriculum practices

The Second Sex vs. The Forgotten Sex: Exploring the missing masculinity component and the involvement of men in gender and development in Egypt

This research explores the masculinity component of gender and development (GAD) interventions in Egypt. Women\u27s empowerment has been the center of interventions in most developing countries, including Egypt. Men\u27s engagement has been peripheral and limited to certain issues. The objective of this research was to gain insights about missing aspects regarding the involvement of men in developmental interventions, including suggestions for enhancing male engagement in communities. The research employed qualitative research methodology for data collection through focus groups with men in four villages in Assiut, and in-depth interviews with stakeholders of GAD. Analysis and coding of data was carried out using NVivo software using a pre-determined analysis framework that corresponded to content of data collection tools. Results revealed a diverse range of issues that men perceived to be needs, primarily economic empowerment and vocational training activities given the challenging economic conditions in Egypt. Other social issues, particularly marital relationships and parenting, were attributed to stressful economic conditions necessitating the need for psychosocial and psychoeducational interventions. This paper recommends placement of gender and masculinity interventions in the economic context of Egypt and a re-connection between gender policy and programming. There is a need for innovative participatory and asset-based programming by building on existing men\u27s leadership in communities, while adapting successful interventions from other similar country contexts. This should be coupled with adopting a psychosocial and psychoeducational approach when targeting men. Sustainability (attaining community self-sufficiency) can be achieved through community capacity development and technical training of personnel implementing programs in communities

Tax Evasion Determinants in Algeria

The study looks into the way in which tax evasion could be a problem to the government of Algeria. The study is based on looking into four variables that will be used to see or analysis how organizations and people how are in Algeria are evading tax. The four variables that are mentioned in this study are penalties, tax rate, education, and confidence in government of any country that will be responsible for making sure that each and every citizen of a country pays his or her own tax charges. The reason why these four variables where selected is that they were noted as the major variables that are leading to people and companies in Algeria not abiding by the regulatory authorities that are responsible of collecting tax. This were the contributing factors to many individuals not paying tax as they felt that the government is over charging them when it comes to paying tax and there are no penalties that are given to individuals or co-operations that are not paying their tax. The limitations that were noted are that accessing adequate information to actually see what is really happening in Algeria for people to evade tax
