Preliminary design of a test rig for combining passive nonlinear isolation with active control
Resilient elements are typically used to isolate delicate equipment from a vibrating host structure. Conventionally, these isolators are designed to operate in their linear region, but more recently nonlinear isolators have been employed to increase the frequency over which vibration isolation can be achieved. Another way of improving the performance of an isolator has been to use active control in conjunction with a passive linear system. The work presented in this paper concerns the development of an experimental rig for vibration isolation and is motivated by the intention to combine the advantages of passive nonlinear isolation with active control.The structure consists of a mass suspended on four tensioned wires to form a single-degree-of-freedom system. The nonlinear stiffness of the wires is such that the system behaves like a hardening Duffing oscillator. Firstly, a static analysis is carried out, both analytically and experimentally, where the nonlinearity of the system is determined by the tension, length, cross-sectional area and Young’s modulus of the wires. For the dynamic analysis, harmonic base excitation is considered. The magnitude of the base displacement is fixed for all excitation frequencies and the level of nonlinearity is adjusted by varying the tension in the wires, a higher tension leading to a milder system nonlinearity. Finally, the motion transmissibility of the system is measured and appears to agree with the theoretical result. The rig forms a suitable platform for subsequent incorporation of an active control system for combining the benefits of passive nonlinear isolation with, for example, skyhook damping
Novel applications for TAZ-8A
Recent needs in the non-aerospace industrial sector have revitalized interest in high performance alloys. TAZ-8A has a combination of properties that makes it unique: a high temperature strength, oxidation resistance, abrasion resistance, and exceptional thermal shock resistance. The major drawback for the utilization of this alloy is the relatively high cost compared with the more common iron base alloys. Reduced material consumption and lower costs are possible by using coatings of TAZ-8A on a low cost substrate. Coatings were applied using plasma spray techniques developed by NASA as well as modified plasma vapor deposition (PVD) techniques
Analysis of turbofan propulsion system weight and dimensions
Weight and dimensional relationships that are used in aircraft preliminary design studies are analyzed. These relationships are relatively simple to prove useful to the preliminary designer, but they are sufficiently detailed to provide meaningful design tradeoffs. All weight and dimensional relationships are developed from data bases of existing and conceptual turbofan engines. The total propulsion system is considered including both engine and nacelle, and all estimating relations stem from physical principles, not statistical correlations
Effect of genotype on duodenal expression of nutrient transporter genes in dairy cows

Studies have shown clear differences between dairy breeds in their feed intake and production efficiencies. The duodenum is critical in the coordination of digestion and absorption of nutrients. This study examined gene transcript abundance of important classes of nutrient transporters in the duodenum of non lactating dairy cows of different feed efficiency potential, namely Holstein-Friesian (HF), Jersey (JE) and their F1 hybrid. Duodenal epithelial tissue was collected at slaughter and stored at -80°C. Total RNA was extracted from tissue and reverse transcribed to generate cDNA. Gene expression of the following transporters, namely nucleoside; amino acid; sugar; mineral; and lipid transporters was measured using quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Data were statistically analysed using mixed models ANOVA in SAS. Orthogonal contrasts were used to test for potential heterotic effects and spearman correlation coefficients calculated to determine potential associations amongst gene expression values and production efficiency variables.
Results
While there were no direct effects of genotype on expression values for any of the genes examined, there was evidence for a heterotic effect (P < 0.05) on ABCG8, in the form of increased expression in the F1 genotype compared to either of the two parent breeds. Additionally, a tendency for increased expression of the amino acid transporters, SLC3A1 (P = 0.072), SLC3A2 (P = 0.081) and SLC6A14 (P = 0.072) was also evident in the F1 genotype. A negative (P < 0.05) association was identified between the expression of the glucose transporter gene SLC5A1 and total lactational milk solids yield, corrected for body weight. Positive correlations (P < 0.05) were also observed between the expression values of genes involved in common transporter roles.
Conclusion
This study suggests that differences in the expression of sterol and amino acid transporters in the duodenum could contribute towards the documented differences in feed efficiency between HF, JE and their F1 hybrid. Furthermore, positive associations between the expression of genes involved in common transporter roles suggest that these may be co-regulated. The study identifies potential candidates for investigation of genetic variants regulating nutrient transport and absorption in the duodenum in dairy cows, which may be incorporated into future breeding programmes
Laboratory mid-IR spectra of equilibrated and igneous meteorites. Searching for observables of planetesimal debris
Meteorites contain minerals from Solar System asteroids with different
properties (like size, presence of water, core formation). We provide new
mid-IR transmission spectra of powdered meteorites to obtain templates of how
mid-IR spectra of asteroidal debris would look like. This is essential for
interpreting mid-IR spectra of past and future space observatories, like the
James Webb Space Telescope. We show that the transmission spectra of wet and
dry chondrites, carbonaceous and ordinary chondrites and achondrite and
chondrite meteorites are distinctly different in a way one can distinguish in
astronomical mid-IR spectra. The two observables that spectroscopically
separate the different meteorites groups (and thus the different types of
parent bodies) are the pyroxene-olivine feature strength ratio and the peak
shift of the olivine spectral features due to an increase in the iron
concentration of the olivine
Functional outcome of patients with spinal cord injury: rehabilitation outcome study
Objective: To increase our knowledge of neurological recovery and functional outcome of patients with spinal cord injuries in order to make more successful rehabilitation programmes based on realistic goals.Design: Descriptive analysis of data gathered in an information system.Setting: Rehabilitation centre in The Netherlands with special department for patients with spinal cord injuries.Subjects: Fifty-five patients with traumatic spinal cord lesions admitted to the rehabilitation centre from 1988 to 1994. Main outcome measures: The functional improvement was presented in terms of progress in independence in nine daily activity skills. Independence was rated on a four-point scale.Results: From admission to discharge, lesions in 100% of patients with tetraplegia and 96% of patients with paraplegia remained complete. Significant progress in independence was made in self-care, ambulation and bladder and bowel care. Differences were found in the extent of functional improvement between subgroups of patients with different levels and extent of lesion. Contrary to expectations based on theoretical models, patients with complete paraplegia did not achieve maximal independence in self-care. Independent walking was only attained by patients with incomplete lesions. Regarding outcome of bladder and bowel care, poor results were found, especially the independence in defaecation and toilet transfers.Conclusions: The results of this study provided more insight into the functional outcome of a group of patients with traumatic spinal cord injury. More research is needed to evaluate the rehabilitation programmes for these patients
