Electron localization : band-by-band decomposition, and application to oxides
Using a plane wave pseudopotential approach to density functional theory we
investigate the electron localization length in various oxides. For this
purpose, we first set up a theory of the band-by-band decomposition of this
quantity, more complex than the decomposition of the spontaneous polarization
(a related concept), because of the interband coupling. We show its
interpretation in terms of Wannier functions and clarify the effect of the
pseudopotential approximation. We treat the case of different oxides: BaO,
-PbO, BaTiO and PbTiO. We also investigate the variation of the
localization tensor during the ferroelectric phase transitions of BaTiO as
well as its relationship with the Born effective charges
Social network centrality and hormones: The interaction of testosterone and cortisol
In this study we tested whether testosterone and cortisol interacted in predicting social network centrality within a male rugby team. Using social network analysis (SNA), three measures of centrality were investigated: popularity (i.e., the number of incoming ties a participant receives), gregariousness (i.e., the number of ties leaving from a participant and reaching out to others), and betweenness (i.e., the number of times a person lies between two other individuals). In line with the idea that testosterone and cortisol jointly regulate the emergence of social status, we found that individuals with high basal testosterone and low basal cortisol were more popular and more likely to act as connectors among other individuals (i.e., betweenness). The same hormonal profile was not predictive of gregariousness. However, in line with the small literature on the topic, we found that cortisol was inversely correlated with gregariousness. Despite the cross-sectional and correlational nature of our research design, these findings represent the first empirical evidence that testosterone and cortisol interact to predict complex measures of social hierarchy position derived from social network analyses

from the (standard, second order) functional formalism. It is shown how these
identities form closed sets from which one can in principle fully determine the
Green's functions involving the temporal component of the gauge field without

Melting and Pressure-Induced Amorphization of Quartz
It has recently been shown that amorphization and melting of ice were
intimately linked. In this letter, we infer from molecular dynamics simulations
on the SiO2 system that the extension of the quartz melting line in the
metastable pressure-temperature domain is the pressure-induced amorphization
line. It seems therefore likely that melting is the physical phenomenon
responsible for pressure induced amorphization. Moreover, we show that the
structure of a "pressure glass" is similar to that of a very rapidly (1e+13 to

Plasma-Induced Frequency Chirp of Intense Femtosecond Lasers and Its Role in Shaping High-Order Harmonic Spectral Lines
We investigate the self-phase modulation of intense femtosecond laser pulses
propagating in an ionizing gas and its effects on collective properties of
high-order harmonics generated in the medium. Plasmas produced in the medium
are shown to induce a positive frequency chirp on the leading edge of the
propagating laser pulse, which subsequently drives high harmonics to become
positively chirped. In certain parameter regimes, the plasma-induced positive
chirp can help to generate sharply peaked high harmonics, by compensating for
the dynamically-induced negative chirp that is caused by the steep intensity
profile of intense short laser pulses.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
A combined XAS and XRD Study of the High-Pressure Behaviour of GaAsO4 Berlinite
Combined X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)
experiments have been carried out on GaAsO4 (berlinite structure) at high
pressure and room temperature. XAS measurements indicate four-fold to six-fold
coordination changes for both cations. The two local coordination
transformations occur at different rates but appear to be coupled. A reversible
transition to a high pressure crystalline form occurs around 8 GPa. At a
pressure of about 12 GPa, the system mainly consists of octahedral gallium
atoms and a mixture of arsenic in four-fold and six-fold coordinations. A
second transition to a highly disordered material with both cations in six-fold
coordination occurs at higher pressures and is irreversible.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX2
Identification of target-specific bioisosteric fragments from ligand-protein crystallographic data
Bioisosteres are functional groups or atoms that are structurally different but that can form similar intermolecular interactions. Potential bioisosteres were identified here from analysing the X-ray crystallographic structures for sets of different ligands complexed with a fixed protein. The protein was used to align the ligands with each other, and then pairs of ligands compared to identify substructural features with high volume overlap that occurred in approximately the same region of geometric space. The resulting pairs of substructural features can suggest potential bioisosteric replacements for use in lead-optimisation studies. Experiments with 12 sets of ligand-protein complexes from the Protein Data Bank demonstrate the effectiveness of the procedure
The Infrared Behaviour of the Pure Yang-Mills Green Functions
We review the infrared properties of the pure Yang-Mills correlators and
discuss recent results concerning the two classes of low-momentum solutions for
them reported in literature; i.e. decoupling and scaling solutions. We will
mainly focuss on the Landau gauge and pay special attention to the results
inferred from the analysis of the Dyson-Schwinger equations of the theory and
from "{\it quenched}" lattice QCD. The results obtained from properly

Cost-Effectiveness of Haemorrhoidal Artery Ligation versus Rubber Band Ligation for the Treatment of Grade II–III Haemorrhoids: Analysis Using Evidence from the HubBLe Trial
Aim Haemorrhoids are a common condition, with nearly
30,000 procedures carried out in England in 2014/15, and
result in a significant quality-of-life burden to patients and
a financial burden to the healthcare system. This study
examined the cost effectiveness of haemorrhoidal artery
ligation (HAL) compared with rubber band ligation (RBL)
in the treatment of grade II–III haemorrhoids.
Method This analyses used data from the HubBLe study, a
multicentre, open-label, parallel group, randomised controlled
trial conducted in 17 acute UK hospitals between
September 2012 and August 2015. A full economic evaluation,
including long-term cost effectiveness, was conducted
from the UK National Health Service (NHS)
perspective. Main outcomes included healthcare costs,
quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) and recurrence. Costeffectiveness
results were presented in terms of incremental
cost per QALY gained and cost per recurrence
avoided. Extrapolation analysis for 3 years beyond the trial
follow-up, two subgroup analyses (by grade of haemorrhoids
and recurrence following RBL at baseline), and
various sensitivity analyses were undertaken.
Results In the primary base-case within-trial analysis, the
incremental total mean cost per patient for HAL compared
with RBL was £1027 (95% confidence interval [CI] £782–
£1272, p\0.001). The incremental QALYs were 0.01
QALYs (95% CI -0.02 to 0.04, p = 0.49). This generated
an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of £104,427
per QALY. In the extrapolation analysis, the estimated
probabilistic ICER was £21,798 per QALY. Results from
all subgroup and sensitivity analyses did not materially
change the base-case result.
Conclusions Under all assessed scenarios, the HAL procedure
was not cost effective compared with RBL for the
treatment of grade II-III haemorrhoids at a cost-effectiveness
threshold of £20,000 per QALY; therefore
Can We Really Prevent Suicide?
Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for all ages. Unfortunately, suicide is difficult to prevent, in large part because the prevalence of risk factors is high among the general population. In this review, clinical and psychological risk factors are examined and methods for suicide prevention are discussed. Prevention strategies found to be effective in suicide prevention
include means restriction, responsible media coverage, and general public education, as well identification methods such as screening, gatekeeper training, and primary care physician education. Although the treatment for preventing suicide is difficult, follow-up that includes pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, or both may be useful.
