Language data exploitation: design and analysis of historical language corpora

Crucial features in the theory of how to elicit data from linguistic corpora are, first of all, establishing the distinction between a ‘corpus’ as properly understood and a ‘text archive’, and secondly, the classification of different types of corpora (i.e. finely struc- tured as opposed to large corpora). ‘Corpus’ can be defined very narrowly and con- trasted with ‘text archive’. The advantages of a clearly structured corpus of historical stages of a language with relatively limited extant records are demonstrated using the example of the corpus of the new Middle High German grammar. Central questions raised in acquiring data from a corpus concern the status of the data and the strategies to be employed in their analysis. The notion of “representativeness” will be re-evaluated and methods outlined to illustrate how a comprehensive analysis of a corpus may be undertaken

The development of the würde + infinitive construction in Early Modern German (1650–1800)

This paper presents a corpus-based analysis of the evolution of the würde + infinitive construction in German during the Early Modern period (1650– 1800), using newly available data from the GerManC-corpus. We demonstrate how this construction occupies a unique position orthogonal to both the tense and mood systems of German through an analysis of the syntax and semantics of würde + infinitive clauses, beginning with Modern Standard German and then subsequently with a historical focus on the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Through both quantitative and qualitative analyses, we examine the contexts in which the construction occurs and see how, as it came to be used more frequently over the period in question, it encroached more and more into contexts which had been the preserve of the synthetic preterite subjunctive, even being used in some where the latter is still the norm in modern German. Thus, by the end of the eighteenth century it had become difficult to identify a clear difference in meaning and use between these forms, and the reasons why the würde + in- finitive construction may be preferred over the synthetic preterite subjunctive are by no means clear. We conclude our discussion with an overview of how the würde + infinitive construction was received in the prescriptive tradition during this key period in the standardization of German, seeing its stigmatization in some contexts in part as an attempt by prescriptive grammarians to establish an explicit and clearly justified role for it in the language

Unternehmenskultur, Arbeitsqualität und Mitarbeiterengagement in den Unternehmen in Deutschland: Abschlussbericht Forschungsprojekt Nr. 18/05 ; ein Forschungsprojekt des Bundesministeriums für Arbeit und Soziales

"Der Zusammenhang von Unternehmenskultur, Arbeitsqualität, Mitarbeiterengagement und Unternehmenserfolg ist aufgrund gewonnener Erkenntnisse aus aktuellen Studien wieder in den Fokus der Unternehmer gerückt. Da zu dieser Thematik in Deutschland bisher keine repräsentativen Studien veröffentlicht wurden, zielt das Projekt 'Unternehmenskultur, Arbeitsqualität und Mitarbeiterengagement in den Unternehmen in Deutschland' darauf ab, diese Forschungslücke zu schließen und den Status Quo von Unternehmenskultur in Deutschland darzustellen. Des Weiteren wird der Zusammenhang von Unternehmenskultur und Arbeitsqualität mit dem Mitarbeiterengagement und dem Unternehmenserfolg aufgezeigt, wobei die durchgeführten Analysen ergeben, dass ein bedeutsamer Zusammenhang zwischen Unternehmenskultur, Mitarbeiterengagement und Unternehmenserfolg besteht. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass hinsichtlich der Größen von Unternehmen nur geringfügige Unterschiede bestehen, während zwischen verschiedenen Branchen etwas deutlichere Unterschiede bezüglich des Niveaus verschiedener Dimensionen der Unternehmenskultur zu finden sind. Erfolgsförderliche Merkmale von Unternehmenskultur sowie Maßnahmen aus der Personalarbeit werden präsentiert. Aus den Ergebnissen können aus Unternehmenssicht hilfreiche Interventionsmaßnahmen zur Förderung von Unternehmenskulturen abgeleitet werden. Nach der Einleitung (Kap. 1) werden in diesem Bericht die theoretische Grundlage und das Konzept der daraus entwickelten Studie erläutert (Kap. 2 und Kap. 3). Hierauf basierend werden die erstellten Erhebungsinstrumente und die gewonnene Datengrundlage beschrieben (Kap. 4 und Anhang). Es folgt eine Darstellung der Ergebnisse für die Unternehmen bzw. die Beschäftigten in Deutschland insgesamt (Kap. 5), sowie eine Differenzierung nach verschiedenen Betriebsgrößen (Kap. 6) und Branchen (Kap. 7). (Autorenreferat)"The relationship between organisational culture, quality of work, employee engagement and business success has recently been reconsidered as a result of findings from recent studies. However no representative study on this topic has been conducted in Germany so far. Therefore the current project 'Organisational Culture, Quality of Work and Employee Engagement in Companies in Germany' seeks to close this research gap and to establish a status-quo-analysis of the perceived organisational culture in Germany. The relationship between organisational culture and quality of work, and employee engagement and business success will be described. This insight is then illuminated from different angles to provide possible approaches for interventions. The discrepancies between different sized organisations and the considerable differences between the industries examined in this study will be described. After the introduction (chapter 1), theoretical considerations and the study developed from these will be explained in chapter 2 and 3. Based on this, a description of the questionnaires employed in the survey follows (chapter 4). The gained insights are depicted in chapter 5. Next, several differences in the perceived organisational culture of differently sized organisations (chapter 6) and different branches (chapter 7) are emphasized. Finally, a critical discussion of the results as well as some concluding remarks are presented." (author's abstract
