Anomaly in the relaxation dynamics close to the surface plasmon resonance
We propose an explanation for the anomalous behaviour observed in the
relaxation dynamics of the differential optical transmission of noble-metal
nanoparticles. Using the temperature dependences of the position and the width
of the surface plasmon resonance, we obtain a strong frequency dependence in
the time evolution of the transmission close to the resonance. In particular,
our approach accounts for the slowdown found below the plasmon frequency. This
interpretation is independent of the presence of a nearby interband transition
which has been invoked previously. We therefore argue that the anomaly should
also appear for alkaline nanoparticles.Comment: version published in EP

Nineteen Prescott Fire Department, Granite Mountain Hot Shot
(GMHS) wildland firefighters (WF) perished in Arizona in June 2013 Yarnell Hill
Fire, an inexplicable wildland fire disaster. In complex wildland fires, sudden,
dynamic changes in human factors and fire conditions can occur, thus mistakes can
be unfortunately fatal. Individual and organizational faults regarding the predictable,
puzzling, human failures that will result in future WF deaths are
addressed. The GMHS were individually, then collectively fixated with abandoning
their Safety Zone to reengage, committing themselves at the worst possible
time, to relocate to another Safety Zone - a form of collective tunnel vision. Our
goal is to provoke meaningful discussion toward improved wildland firefighter
safety with practical solutions derived from a long-established wildland firefighter
expertise/performance in a fatality-prone profession. Wildfire fatalities are
unavoidable, hence these proposals, applied to ongoing training, can significantly
contribute to other well-thought-out and validated measures to reduce them
Discourse revisited : dimensions and employment of first-order strategy discourse during institutional adoption
Despite decades of research on strategy, we still know little about what the concept of strategy means to actual strategists and how they use it in practice. Working at the intersections of institutional and practice theories, we use exploratory interviews with strategy directors and a longitudinal case study to uncover four dimensions of first-order strategy discourse: functional, contextual, identity, and metaphorical. We also reveal three phases in the interrelation between first-order strategy discourse and institutional work: shaping, settling, and selling and a differential emphasis (selective focusing) on dimensions of the first-order strategy discourse during the institutional adoption process. We contribute to a deeper understanding of the concept of strategy in practice, the process of institutional adoption, and of the role of discourse in this process
Lifetime of the first and second collective excitations in metallic nanoparticles
We determine the lifetime of the surface plasmon in metallic nanoparticles
under various conditions, concentrating on the Landau damping, which is the
dominant mechanism for intermediate-size particles. Besides the main
contribution to the lifetime, which smoothly increases with the size of the
particle, our semiclassical evaluation yields an additional oscillating
component. For the case of noble metal particles embedded in a dielectric
medium, it is crucial to consider the details of the electronic confinement; we
show that in this case the lifetime is determined by the shape of the
self-consistent potential near the surface. Strong enough perturbations may
lead to the second collective excitation of the electronic system. We study its
lifetime, which is limited by two decay channels: Landau damping and
ionization. We determine the size dependence of both contributions and show
that the second collective excitation remains as a well defined resonance.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures; few minor change

What lies beneath? The role of informal and hidden networks in the management of crises
Crisis management research traditionally focuses on the role of formal communication networks in the escalation and management of organisational crises. Here, we consider instead informal and unobservable networks. The paper explores how hidden informal exchanges can impact upon organisational decision-making and performance, particularly around inter-agency working, as knowledge distributed across organisations and shared between organisations is often shared through informal means and not captured effectively through the formal decision-making processes. Early warnings and weak signals about potential risks and crises are therefore often missed. We consider the implications of these dynamics in terms of crisis avoidance and crisis management
Discontinuous Euler instability in nanoelectromechanical systems
We investigate nanoelectromechanical systems near mechanical instabilities.
We show that quite generally, the interaction between the electronic and the
vibronic degrees of freedom can be accounted for essentially exactly when the
instability is continuous. We apply our general framework to the Euler buckling
instability and find that the interaction between electronic and vibronic
degrees of freedom qualitatively affects the mechanical instability, turning it
into a discontinuous one in close analogy with tricritical points in the Landau

A Study of the Cyclotron Gas-Stopping Concept for the Production of Rare Isotope Beams
The proposed cyclotron gas-stopping scheme for the efficient thermalization
of intense rare isotope beams is examined. Simulations expand on previous
studies and expose many complications of such an apparatus arising from
physical effects not accounted for properly in previous work. The previously
proposed cyclotron gas-stopper geometry is found to have a near null
efficiency, but extended simulations suggest that a device with a much larger
pole gap could achieve a stopping efficiency approaching roughly 90% and at
least a 10 times larger acceptance. However, some of the advantages that were
incorrectly predicted in previous simulations for high intensity operation of

Trust and control interrelations: New perspectives on the trust control nexus

Trust and control are interlinked processes commonly seen as key to reach effectiveness in inter- and intraorganizational relations. The relation between trust and control is, however, a complex one, and research into this relation has given rise to various and contradictory interpretations of how trust and control relate. A well-known discussion is directed at whether trust and control are better conceived as substitutes, or as complementary mechanisms of governance. The articles in this special issue bring the discussion on the relationship between both concepts a step further by identifying common factors, distinctive mechanisms, and key implications relevant for theory building and empirical research. By studying trust and control through different perspectives and at different levels of analysis, the articles provide new theoretical insights and empirical evidence on the foundations of the trust-control interrelations
