FACH: Fast algorithm for detecting cohesive hierarchies of communities in large networks

    Get PDF
Vertices in a real-world social network can be grouped into densely connected communities that are sparsely connected to other groups. Moreover, these communities can be partitioned into successively more cohesive communities. Despite an ever-growing pile of research on hierarchical community detection, existing methods suffer from either inefficiency or inappropriate modeling. Yet, some cut-based approaches have shown to be effective in finding communities without hierarchies. In this paper, we study the hierarchical community detection problem in large networks and show that it is NP-hard. We then propose an efficient algorithm based on edge-cuts to identify the hierarchy of communities. Since communities at lower levels of the hierarchy are denser than the higher levels, we leverage a fast network sparsification technique to enhance the running time of the algorithm. We further propose a randomized approximation algorithm for information centrality of networks. We finally evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms by conducting extensive experiments using real datasets. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithms are promising and outperform the state-of-the-art algorithms by several orders of magnitude. This work is supported by the grant of Australian Research Council Discovery Project No. DP120102627

LncRNA in gastric cancer drug resistance: deciphering the therapeutic strategies

    Get PDF
Gastric cancer (GC) is an exceedingly aggressive disease and ranks as the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths, which poses a huge health burden globally. Chemotherapy is commonly employed during the middle to advanced stages of cancer, although it faces frequent treatment failures attributed to drug resistance. Thus, it is imperative for researchers to identify potential targets for overcoming therapeutic resistance, thereby facilitating the development of novel anti-cancer agents for GC patients with advanced stages. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a diverse group of transcripts with limited protein-coding capacity, which have been recognized for functional molecules for regulating cancer progression including cell proliferation, metastasis, and drug resistance in GC. In this review, we examine the intricate molecular networks on the role of lncRNAs in drug resistance of GC. LncRNAs conferred cancer cell resistance to anti-cancer drug through various molecular mechanisms, therefore functioning as promising therapeutic targets for GC patients. Additionally, we discuss current advancements of strategies targeting lncRNAs in cancer therapy, which may pave the way for lncRNA-mediated precision medicine for this malignant disease

Online unicasting and multicasting in software-defined networks

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has emerged as the paradigm of the next-generation networking through separating the control plane from the data plane. In a software-defined network, the forwarding table at each switch node usually is implemented by expensive and power-hungry Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) that only has limited numbers of entries. In addition, the bandwidth capacity at each link is limited as well. Provisioning quality services to users by admitting their requests subject to such critical network resource constraints is a fundamental problem, and very little attention has been paid. In this paper, we study online unicasting and multicasting in SDNs with an objective of maximizing the network throughput under network resource constraints, for which we first propose a novel cost model to accurately capture the usages of network resources at switch nodes and links. We then devise two online algorithms with competitive ratios O(log n) and O(Kϵlog n) for online unicasting and multicasting, respectively, where n is the network size, K is the maximum number of destinations in any multicast request, and ϵ is a constant with 0 < ϵ ≤ 1. We finally evaluate the proposed algorithms empirically through simulations. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms are very promising

Role of Epicardial Adipose Tissue in Triggering and Maintaining Atrial Fibrillation

    Get PDF
Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia leading to cardiogenic stroke. Without membranous sructure between epicardial adipose tissue and atrial myocardium, epicardial adipose tissue directly covers the surface of the atrial myocardium. The formation of an epicardial adipose tissue inflammatory microenvironment, fibrosis, infiltration by epicardial adipose tissue, autonomic dysfunction and oxidative stress are important mechanisms that trigger and maintain atrial fibrillation. Those mechanisms are reviewed herein

Maximizing Network throughput in Heterogeneous UAV Networks

In this paper we study the deployment of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) network that consists of multiple UAVs to provide emergent communication service for people who are trapped in a disaster area, where each UAV is equipped with a base station that has limited computing capacity and power supply, and thus can only serve a limited number of people. Unlike most existing studies that focused on homogeneous UAVs, we consider the deployment of heterogeneous UAVs where different UAVs have different computing capacities. We study a problem of deploying K heterogeneous UAVs in the air to form a temporarily connected UAV network such that the network throughput-the number of users served by the UAVs, is maximized, subject to the constraint that the number of people served by each UAV is no greater than its service capacity. We then propose a novel O√s/K)-approximation algorithm for the problem, where s is a given positive integer with 1 ≤ s≤ K, e.g., s=3. We also devise an improved heuristic, based on the approximation algorithm. We finally evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms. Experimental results show that the numbers of users served by UAVs in the solutions delivered by the proposed algorithms are increased by 25% than state-of-the-arts

Mechanisms of Myocardial Stunning in Stress-Induced Cardiomyopathy

    Get PDF
Stress-induced cardiomyopathy, in contrast to acute myocardial infarction, is a type of acute heart failure characterized by reversible left ventricular dysfunction. Cardiac imaging primarily reveals left ventricle myocardial stunning, 81.7% of which is apical type. Emotional or psychological stress usually precedes the onset of stress-induced cardiomyopathy, which is increasingly being recognized as a unique neurogenic myocardial stunning disease. To distinguish between acute myocardial infarction and acute viral or auto-immune myocarditis, this review summarizes specific mechanisms of myocardial stunning in stress-induced cardiomyopathy, such as calcium disorders, metabolic alterations, anatomical and histological variations in different parts of the left ventricle, and microvascular dysfunction

Probiotics in piglet: from gut health to pathogen defense mechanisms

    Get PDF
Various problems and obstacles are encountered during pig farming, especially the weaning phase when switching from liquid to solid feed. Infection by pathogenic bacteria causes damage to the intestinal barrier function of piglets, disrupts the balance of the intestinal microbiota, and destroys the chemical, mechanical, and immune barriers of the intestinal tract, which is one of the main causes of gut inflammation or gut diseases in piglets. The traditional method is to add antibiotics to piglet diets to prevent bacterial infections. However, long-term overuse of antibiotics leads to bacterial resistance and residues in animal products, threatening human health and causing gut microbiota dysbiosis. In this context, finding alternatives to antibiotics to maintain pre- and post-weaning gut health in piglets and prevent pathogenic bacterial infections becomes a real emergency. The utilization of probiotics in piglet nutrition has emerged as a pivotal strategy to promote gut health and defend against pathogenic infections, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional antibiotic usage. This review introduces recent findings that underscore the multifaceted roles of probiotics in enhancing piglet welfare, from fortifying the gut barrier to mitigating the impacts of common bacterial pathogens. Meanwhile, this study introduces the functions of probiotics from different perspectives: positive effects of probiotics on piglet gut health, protecting piglets against pathogen infection, and the mechanisms of probiotics in preventing pathogenic bacteria
