A standard radio frequency coaxial connector is modified so that a plastic insulating sleeve can be mounted in the wall of a vacuum chamber. This eliminates ground loops and interference from cable connections

‘Put on your boots and Harrington!’: The ordinariness of 1970s UK punk dress

In 2013, the Metropolitan Museum hosted an exhibition of punk-inspired fashion entitled Punk: Chaos to Couture. The exhibition emphasized the ‘spectacular’ elements of the subculture, reflecting a narrative that dominates accounts of punk dress, whereby it is presented as a site of art school creativity and disjuncture with the past. This is an important aspect of punk dress, but photos of bands and audiences reveal that there was much more to British punk style in the 1970s than what was being sold on London’s King’s Road. Heeding calls to trouble the boundary between the spectacular and the ordinary in subculture studies, this article looks at the ordinariness of 1970s British punk dress, arguing that we should understand punk dress in terms of mass-market commodities, not just customization and designer fashion. Many of these commodities were worn by the skinheads who preceded punk, and this article explores this subcultural continuity by focusing on the role of the Dr.Marten boot and the Harrington jacketin first- and second-wave British punk dress. It does so through discussion of the Cockney Rejects, the 1979 BBC television dramatization of the Sham 69 album That’s Life and the Undertones.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    All-optical periodic code matching by a single-shot frequency-domain cross-correlation measurement

Optical single-short measurement of the cross-correlation function between periodic sequences is demonstrated. The sequences are encoded into the broadband ultrashort phase-shaped pulses which are mixed in the nonlinear medium with additional amplitude-shaped narrowband pulse. The spectrum of the resulted four wave mixing signal is measured to provide the cross-correlation function. The high contrast between the values of cross-correlation and auto-correlation (the latter includes also the information of the sequence period) has potential to be employed in the optical implementation of CDMA communication protocol

Do Crises Tear the Fabric of Oil Trade?

    Get PDF
In 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, touching off an economic, financial, diplomatic, and military crisis associated with a tremendous spike in oil prices and recession in OECD and oil-importing developing countries. But was the Gulf Crisis a disruption? Did it affect the fabric of oil trade? To examine this question, this paper examines the changing role of international trade intermediaries (ITIs, often referred to as “trading companies”) in the oil market. ITIs connect buyers and sellers, serving as the glue that holds many commodity markets together. Oil trading companies have attracted harsh scrutiny form policymakers as a result of allegations regarding their role in the United Nations’ Iraqi Oil-for-Food Program, but minimal scholarly attention. The paper takes advantage of a unique microdatabase on the Brent market. Produced in the U.K. North Sea, Brent Blend is by far the most widely traded crude oil in the international market. Participants in the Brent market are diverse, with the largest traders falling into two categories. The first comprises “industrial MNEs”—companies active in the business of producing or refining crude oil. The second category comprises financial houses and trading companies. This diversity provides an opportunity to test hypotheses regarding behavioral differences across types of companies and geographic origin, before, during, and after the crisis.oil, trading companies, crisis, Brent, North Sea
