A Model for the Global Quantum Efficiency for a TPB-based Wavelength-Shifting System used with Photomultiplier Tubes in Liquid Argon in MicroBooNE
We present a model for the Global Quantum Efficiency (GQE) of the MicroBooNE
optical units. An optical unit consists of a flat, circular acrylic plate,
coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB), positioned near the photocathode of a
20.2-cm diameter photomultiplier tube. The plate converts the ultra-violet
scintillation photons from liquid argon into visible-spectrum photons to which
the cryogenic phototubes are sensitive. The GQE is the convolution of the
efficiency of the plates that convert the 128 nm scintillation light from
liquid argon to visible light, the efficiency of the shifted light to reach the
photocathode, and the efficiency of the cryogenic photomultiplier tube. We
develop a GEANT4-based model of the optical unit, based on first principles,
and obtain the range of probable values for the expected number of detected
photoelectrons () given the known systematic errors on the
simulation parameters. We compare results from four measurements of the determined using alpha-particle sources placed at two distances from a
TPB-coated plate in a liquid argon cryostat test stand. We also directly
measured the radial dependence of the quantum efficiency, and find that this
has the same shape as predicted by our model. Our model results in a GQE of
for the MicroBooNE optical units. While the information shown
here is MicroBooNE specific, the approach to the model and the collection of
simulation parameters will be widely applicable to many liquid-argon-based

Duhamel versus transanal endorectal pull through (TERPT) for the surgical treatment of Hirschsprung’s disease
For the surgical treatment of Hirschsprung’s disease, several surgical techniques are used to resect the distal aganglionic colon. Two frequently used techniques are the Duhamel procedure and the transanal endorectal pull-through procedure. During the ‘8th Pediatric Colorectal Course’ in Nijmegen, November 2015, a workshop was organized to share experiences of both techniques by several experts in the field and to discuss (long term) outcomes. Specifically, the objective of the meeting was to discuss the main controversies in relation to the technical execution of both procedures in order to make an initial assessment of the limitations of available evidence for clinical decision-making and to formulate a set of preliminary recommendations for current clinical care and future research
Structural phase transitions in multipole traps
A small number of laser-cooled ions trapped in a linear radiofrequency
multipole trap forms a hollow tube structure. We have studied, by means of
molecular dynamics simulations, the structural transition from a double ring to
a single ring of ions. We show that the single-ring configuration has the
advantage to inhibit the thermal transfer from the rf-excited radial components
of the motion to the axial component, allowing to reach the Doppler limit
temperature along the direction of the trap axis. Once cooled in this
particular configuration, the ions experience an angular dependency of the
confinement if the local adiabaticity parameter exceeds the empirical limit.
Bunching of the ion structures can then be observed and an analytic expression
is proposed to take into account for this behaviour
Chemical Abundance Analysis of Tucana III, the Second -process Enhanced Ultra-Faint Dwarf Galaxy
We present a chemical abundance analysis of four additional confirmed member
stars of Tucana III, a Milky Way satellite galaxy candidate in the process of
being tidally disrupted as it is accreted by the Galaxy. Two of these stars are
centrally located in the core of the galaxy while the other two stars are
located in the eastern and western tidal tails. The four stars have chemical
abundance patterns consistent with the one previously studied star in Tucana
III: they are moderately enhanced in -process elements, i.e. they have
0.4 dex. The non-neutron-capture elements generally
follow trends seen in other dwarf galaxies, including a metallicity range of
0.44 dex and the expected trend in -elements, i.e., the lower
metallicity stars have higher Ca and Ti abundance. Overall, the chemical
abundance patterns of these stars suggest that Tucana III was an ultra-faint
dwarf galaxy, and not a globular cluster, before being tidally disturbed. As is
the case for the one other galaxy dominated by -process enhanced stars,
Reticulum II, Tucana III's stellar chemical abundances are consistent with
pollution from ejecta produced by a binary neutron star merger, although a
different -process element or dilution gas mass is required to explain the
abundances in these two galaxies if a neutron star merger is the sole source of

Forward Global Photometric Calibration of the Dark Energy Survey
Many scientific goals for the Dark Energy Survey (DES) require calibration of
optical/NIR broadband photometry that is stable in time and uniform
over the celestial sky to one percent or better. It is also necessary to limit
to similar accuracy systematic uncertainty in the calibrated broadband
magnitudes due to uncertainty in the spectrum of the source. Here we present a
"Forward Global Calibration Method (FGCM)" for photometric calibration of the
DES, and we present results of its application to the first three years of the
survey (Y3A1). The FGCM combines data taken with auxiliary instrumentation at
the observatory with data from the broad-band survey imaging itself and models
of the instrument and atmosphere to estimate the spatial- and time-dependence
of the passbands of individual DES survey exposures. "Standard" passbands are
chosen that are typical of the passbands encountered during the survey. The
passband of any individual observation is combined with an estimate of the
source spectral shape to yield a magnitude in the standard
system. This "chromatic correction" to the standard system is necessary to
achieve sub-percent calibrations. The FGCM achieves reproducible and stable
photometric calibration of standard magnitudes of stellar
sources over the multi-year Y3A1 data sample with residual random calibration
errors of per exposure. The accuracy of the
calibration is uniform across the DES footprint to
within . The systematic uncertainties of magnitudes in
the standard system due to the spectra of sources are less than

Search for Second-Generation Scalar Leptoquarks in Collisions at =1.96 TeV
Results on a search for pair production of second generation scalar
leptoquark in collisions at =1.96 TeV are reported. The
data analyzed were collected by the CDF detector during the 2002-2003 Tevatron
Run II and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 198 pb. Leptoquarks
(LQ) are sought through their decay into (charged) leptons and quarks, with
final state signatures represented by two muons and jets and one muon, large
transverse missing energy and jets. We observe no evidence for production
and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the production cross sections as well
as lower limits on their mass as a function of , where is the

Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in
ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using 318 pb^{-1} of data collected with
the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select ttbar decays into the final states
e nu + jets and mu nu + jets, in which at least one b quark from the t-quark
decays is identified using a secondary vertex-finding algorithm. Assuming a top
quark mass of 178 GeV/c^2, we measure a cross section of 8.7 +-0.9 (stat)
+1.1-0.9 (syst) pb. We also report the first observation of ttbar with
significance greater than 5 sigma in the subsample in which both b quarks are
identified, corresponding to a cross section of 10.1 +1.6-1.4(stat)+2.0-1.3
