With the Sahel food crisis of 2005, followed by soaring prices on international markets in 2008 and 2010, this is an increasingly pressing issue in national, regional and international policy debates, which address it in a uniform manner. Giant electrocaloric effect in thin film Pb Zr_0.95 Ti_0.05 O_3
An applied electric field can reversibly change the temperature of an
electrocaloric material under adiabatic conditions, and the effect is strongest
near phase transitions. This phenomenon has been largely ignored because only
small effects (0.003 K V^-1) have been seen in bulk samples such as
Pb0.99Nb0.02(Zr0.75Sn0.20Ti0.05)0.98O3 and there is no consensus on macroscopic
models. Here we demonstrate a giant electrocaloric effect (0.48 K V^-1) in 300
nm sol-gel PbZr0.95Ti0.05O3 films near the ferroelectric Curie temperature of
222oC. We also discuss a solid state device concept for electrical
refrigeration that has the capacity to outperform Peltier or magnetocaloric
coolers. Our results resolve the controversy surrounding macroscopic models of
the electrocaloric effect and may inspire ab initio calculations of
electrocaloric parameters and thus a targeted search for new materials.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Screen Printed PZT Thick Films Using Composite Film Technology
A spin coating composite sol gel technique for producing lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thick films has been modified for use with screen printing techniques. The resulting screen printing technique can be used to produce 10 ?m thick films in a single print. The resultant films are porous but the density can be increased through the use of repeated sol infiltration/pyrolysis treatments to yield a high density film. When fired at 710°C the composite screen printed films have dielectric and piezoelectric properties comparable to, or exceeding, those of films produced using a 'conventional' powder/glass frit/oil ink and fired at 890°C
Dislocation-mediated growth of bacterial cell walls
Recent experiments have illuminated a remarkable growth mechanism of
rod-shaped bacteria: proteins associated with cell wall extension move at
constant velocity in circles oriented approximately along the cell
circumference (Garner et al., Science (2011), Dominguez-Escobar et al. Science
(2011), van Teeffelen et al. PNAS (2011). We view these as dislocations in the
partially ordered peptidoglycan structure, activated by glycan strand extension
machinery, and study theoretically the dynamics of these interacting defects on
the surface of a cylinder. Generation and motion of these interacting defects
lead to surprising effects arising from the cylindrical geometry, with
important implications for growth. We also discuss how long range elastic
interactions and turgor pressure affect the dynamics of the fraction of
actively moving dislocations in the bacterial cell wall.Comment: to appear in PNA
Agricultural Turns, Geographical Turns: Retrospect and Prospect.
It is accepted that British rural geography has actively engaged with the ‘cultural turn’, leading to a resurgence of research within the sub-discipline. However, a reading of recent reviews suggests that the cultural turn has largely, if not completely, bypassed those geographers interested in the agricultural sector. Farming centred engagements with notions of culture have been relatively limited compared with those concerned with the non-agricultural aspects of rural space. Indeed, agricultural geography represents something of an awkward case in the context of the disciplinary turn to culture, a situation that demands further exposition. In seeking explanation, it becomes evident that research on the farm sector is more culturally informed than initially appears. This paper argues that there have been both interesting and important engagements between agricultural geography and cultural perspectives over the past decade. The paper elaborates four specific areas of research which provide evidence for concern about the ‘culture’ within agriculture. The future contribution that culturally informed perspectives in geographical research can bring to agricultural issues is outlined by way of conclusion
Monitoring serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), IGF-I/IGFBP-3 molar ratio and leptin during growth hormone treatment for disordered growth
OBJECTIVE: Serum IGF-I levels are monitored during
GH replacement treatment in adults with GH defi-
ciency (GHD) to guide GH dose adjustment and to
minimize occurrence of GH-related side-effects. This
is not routine practice in children treated with GH. The
aim of this study was to evaluate changes in (1) serum
IGF-I, IGFBP-3 and IGF-I/IGFBP-3 molar ratio, and (2)
serum leptin, an indirect marker of GH response,
during the first year of GH treatment in children with
disordered growth.
DESIGN: An observational prospective longitudinal
study with serial measurements at five time points
during the first year of GH treatment was carried out.
Each patient served as his/her own control.
PATIENTS The study included 31 patients, grouped
as (1) GHD (n=20) and (2) non-GHD (Turner syndrome
n=7; Noonan syndrome n=4), who had not previously
received GH treatment.
MEASUREMENTS: Serum IGF-I, IGFBP-3 and leptin
levels were measured before treatment and after
6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months of GH
treatment, with a mean dose of 0.5 IU/kg/wk in GHD
and 0.7 IU/kg/wk in non-GHD groups. IGF-I, IGFBP-3
and the calculated IGF-I/IGFBP-3 molar ratio were
expressed as SD scores using reference values from
the local population.
RESULTS: In the GHD group, IGF-I SDS before treatment was lower compared with the non-GHD (-5.4 ± 2.5 vs. -1.8 ± 1.0; P < 0.001). IGF-I (-1.8 SDS ± 2.2) and IGFBP-3 (-1.1 SDS ± 0.6) levels and their molar ratios were highest at 6 weeks and remained relatively constant thereafter. In the non-GHD group, IGF-I levels increased throughout the year and were maximum at 12 months (0.3 SDS ± 1.4) while IGFBP-3 (1.1 SDS ± 0.9) and IGF-I/IGFBP-3 molar ratio peaked at 6 months. In both groups, IGF-I SDS and IGF-I/IGFBP-3 during treatment correlated with the dose of GH expressed as IU/m2/week (r-values 0.77 to 0.89; P = 0.005) but not as IU/kg/week. Serum leptin levels decreased significantly during GH treatment in the GHD (median before treatment 4.0 g/l; median after 12 months treatment 2.4 g/l; P = 0.02) but not the non-GHD (median before treatment 3.0 g/l; median after 12 months treatment 2.6 g/l). In the GHD group, serum leptin before treatment correlated with 12 month change in height SDS (r = 0.70, P = 0.02).
CONCLUSIONS: The pattern of IGF-I, IGFBP-3 and
their molar ratio during the first year of GH treatment
differed between the GHD and non-GHD groups. Calculation
of GH dose by surface area may be preferable
to calculating by body weight. As a GH dose-dependent
increase in serum IGF-I and IGF-I/IGFBP-3 may
be associated with adverse effects, serum IGF-I and
IGFBP-3 should be monitored routinely during longterm
GH treatment. Serum leptin was the only variable
that correlated with first year growth response in
GHD
Pyroelectric effect enhancement in laminate composites under short circuit condition
The pyroelectric coefficients of laminate composites under short circuit condition have been investigated by analytical modeling and numerical simulations. Indicators for various pyroelectric/non-pyroelectric material pairs that can be utilized to determine their pyroelectric coefficient enhancement credentials have been identified. Six pyroelectric materials were paired with six non-pyroelectric/elastic materials and their pyroelectric coefficient enhancement potential and figure of merit for efficiency were investigated. The best performing partnership out of the 36 pairs was lead zirconate titanate (PZT5H)-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride thermoplastic (CPVC) for thickness ratios (R) below 0.09 and PZT5H-zinc for R larger than 0.09 with both demonstrating total pyroelectric coefficient of approximately -20x10(-4) C m(-2) K(-1) at R=0.09, which corresponds to approximately 300% increase in the coefficient. PZT5H-CPVC also showed maximum of 800% rise in the pyroelectric coefficient while figure of merit for efficiency indicated up to twentyfold increase in its electrical response output per given thermal stimuli when compared to that of PZT5H by itself
