Alterity and Otherness have often been the privileged field of contemplation within Western philosophy. Since the Presocratic philosophers, Being has been defined in relation to – and more often opposed to – non-Being, just as Goodness has been considered in relation to Evil, Beauty in relation to the Ugly, Society in relation to Nature, and the examples could be multiplied ad libitum. Every identity is shaped in opposition to an excluded other, an outside, or some thing. Identity and alterity are thus constructed as two inseparable sides of a single, coherent philosophical discourse, or rather a field of various discourses that comprise a philosophy, associated with - although not limited to - the early centuries of what we call modernity
Modelling the Progression of Male Swimmers’ Performances through Adolescence
Insufficient data on adolescent athletes is contributing to the challenges facing youth athletic development and accurate talent identification. The purpose of this study was to model the progression of male sub-elite swimmers’ performances during adolescence. The performances of 446 males (12–19 year olds) competing in seven individual events (50, 100, 200 m freestyle, 100 m backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, 200 m individual medley) over an eight-year period at an annual international schools swimming championship, run under FINA regulations were collected. Quadratic functions for each event were determined using mixed linear models. Thresholds of peak performance were achieved between the ages of 18.5 ± 0.1 (50 m freestyle and 200 m individual medley) and 19.8 ± 0.1 (100 m butterfly) years. The slowest rate of improvement was observed in the 200 m individual medley (20.7%) and the highest in the 100 m butterfly (26.2%). Butterfly does however appear to be one of the last strokes in which males specialise. The models may be useful as talent identification tools, as they predict the age at which an average sub-elite swimmer could potentially peak. The expected rate of improvement could serve as a tool in which to monitor and evaluate benchmarks

The final version is available from Maney Publishing via the DOI in this record.OBJECTIVES: The study examined the feasibility of utilizing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with a group of adolescent boys and girls to assess modifications in cognitive function, dependent upon the nutritional state of the participants. METHODS: Twenty children aged 12-14 years completed two cognitive trials, in a randomized counterbalanced order, one under fasting condition, one after consuming breakfast, during which continuous fMRI data were acquired. RESULTS: Although no statistically significant (P > 0.05) improvement in task performance was determined, significantly higher activation was recorded in the frontal, premotor, and primary visual cortex areas in the breakfast trial relative to the fasting condition. DISCUSSION: Such a finding may have important implications in the examination of the role of diet, and specifically breakfast, in determining children's performance within the school environment
Pulse-Administered Toceranib Phosphate Plus Lomustine for Treatment of Unresectable Mast Cell Tumors in Dogs.
BackgroundNonresectable mast cell tumors (MCT) in dogs remain a therapeutic challenge, and investigation of novel combination therapies is warranted. Intermittent administration of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) combined with cytotoxic chemotherapy may effectively chemosensitize canine MCT while decreasing cost and adverse effects associated with either agent administered as monotherapy.Hypothesis/objectivesThe primary study objectives were to (1) identify the maximally tolerated dose (MTD), (2) determine the objective response rate (ORR) and (3) describe the adverse event profile of pulse-administered toceranib phosphate (TOC) combined with lomustine.AnimalsForty-seven client-owned dogs with measurable MCT.MethodsToceranib phosphate was given PO on days 1, 3 and 5 of a 21-day cycle at a target dosage of 2.75 mg/kg. Lomustine was given PO on day 3 of each cycle at a starting dosage of 50 mg/m(2) . All dogs were concurrently treated with diphenhydramine, omeprazole, and prednisone.ResultsThe MTD of lomustine was established at 50 mg/m(2) when combined with pulse-administered TOC; the dose-limiting toxicity was neutropenia. Forty-one dogs treated at the MTD were evaluable for outcome assessment. The ORR was 46% (4 complete response, 15 partial response) and the overall median progression-free survival (PFS) was 53 days (1 to >752 days). On multivariate analysis, variables significantly associated with improved PFS included response to treatment, absence of metastasis, and no previous chemotherapy.Conclusions and clinical importanceCombined treatment with pulse-administered TOC and lomustine generally is well tolerated and may be a reasonable treatment option for dogs with unresectable or metastatic MCT
FALCON: a software package for analysis of nestedness in bipartite networks

Please cite the published version which is available via the DOI link in this record.Nestedness is a statistical measure used to interpret bipartite interaction data in several ecological and evolutionary contexts, e.g. biogeography (species-site relationships) and species interactions (plant-pollinator and host-parasite networks). Multiple methods have been used to evaluate nestedness, which differ in how the metrics for nestedness are determined. Furthermore, several different null models have been used to calculate statistical significance of nestedness scores. The profusion of measures and null models, many of which give conflicting results, is problematic for comparison of nestedness across different studies.
We developed the FALCON software package to allow easy and efficient comparison of nestedness scores and statistical significances for a given input network, using a selection of the more popular measures and null models from the current literature. FALCON currently includes six measures and five null models for nestedness in binary networks, and two measures and four null models for nestedness in weighted networks. The FALCON software is designed to be efficient and easy to use. FALCON code is offered in three languages (R, MATLAB, Octave) and is designed to be modular and extensible, enabling users to easily expand its functionality by adding further measures and null models. FALCON provides a robust methodology for comparing the strength and significance of nestedness in a given bipartite network using multiple measures and null models. It includes an “adaptive ensemble” method to reduce undersampling of the null distribution when calculating statistical significance. It can work with binary or weighted input networks. FALCON is a response to the proliferation of different nestedness measures and associated null models in the literature. It allows easy and efficient calculation of nestedness scores and statistical significances using different methods, enabling comparison of results from different studies and thereby supporting theoretical study of the causes and implications of nestedness in different biological contexts
Systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between childhood overweight and obesity and primary school diet and physical activity policies.
Open Access ArticleObesity is a major public health concern and there are increasing calls for policy intervention. As obesity and the related health conditions develop during childhood, schools are being seen as important locations for obesity prevention, including multifaceted interventions incorporating policy elements. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the effects of policies related to diet and physical activity in schools, either alone, or as part of an intervention programme on the weight status of children aged 4 to 11 years. A comprehensive and systematic search of medical, education, exercise science, and social science databases identified 21 studies which met the inclusion criteria. There were no date, location or language restrictions. The identified studies evaluated a range of either, or both, diet and physical activity related policies, or intervention programmes including such policies, using a variety of observational and experimental designs. The policies were clustered into those which sought to affect diet, those which sought to affect physical activity and those which sought to affect both diet and physical activity to undertake random effects meta-analysis. Within the diet cluster, studies of the United States of America National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs were analysed separately; however there was significant heterogeneity in the pooled results. The pooled effects of the physical activity, and other diet related policies on BMI-SDS were non-significant. The multifaceted interventions tended to include policy elements related to both diet and physical activity (combined cluster), and although these interventions were too varied to pool their results, significant reductions in weight-related outcomes were demonstrated. The evidence from this review suggests that, when implemented alone, school diet and physical activity related policies appear insufficient to prevent or treat overweight or obesity in children, however, they do appear to have an effect when developed and implemented as part of a more extensive intervention programme. Additional evidence is required before recommendations regarding the focus of policies can be made and therefore, increased effort should be made to evaluate the effect of policies and policy containing intervention programmes upon weight status.Medical Research Council (MRC)National Institute for Health Research (NIHR

The acute effect of exercise intensity on vascular function in adolescents
This is a non-final version of an article published in final form in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.Introduction: Impairments in vascular function are present in asymptomatic youths with risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Exercise can promote vascular health in youth, but the effect of exercise intensity and the time course in response to acute exercise are unknown. Methods: Twenty adolescents (10 male, 14.1 ± 0.3 y) on separate days, and in a counter-balanced order: 1) cycled at 90% of the gas exchange threshold (moderate-intensity exercise; MIE); 2) completed 8x1 min cycling at 90% peak power with 75 s recovery (high-intensity interval exercise; HIIE). The duration of MIE (25.8 ± 2.1 min) was work-matched to HIIE (23.0 min). Macro- and micro-vascular function were assessed before, immediately post, and 1 and 2 hours after exercise by flow mediated dilation (FMD) and laser Doppler imaging (total reactive hyperaemia). Results: FMD was attenuated immediately after HIIE (P0.60 for all) and HIIE (P1.18 for all). Total reactive hyperaemia was greater in HIIE compared to MIE immediately after (P=0.03, ES=0.67) and 1 hour after (P=0.01, ES=0.62) exercise, with a trend to be greater 2 hours after (P=0.06, ES=0.45). Conclusion: Exercise intensity is positively associated with macro- and micro-vascular function 1 and 2 hours after exercise. Performing HIIE may provide superior vascular benefits than MIE in adolescents
Confirming the Value of Adolescent Swimming Performance Models

The final version is available from Human Kinetics via the DOI in this record.PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of existing performance models to assess the progression of male and female adolescent swimmers through a quantitative and qualitative mixed-methods approach. METHODS: Fourteen published models were tested using retrospective data from an independent sample of Dutch junior national-level swimmers from when they were between 12 and 18 years of age (n=13). The degree of association by Pearson's correlations were compared between the calculated differences from the models and quadratic functions derived from the Dutch junior national qualifying times. Swimmers were grouped based on their differences from the models and compared with their swimming histories that were extracted from questionnaires and follow-up interviews. RESULTS: Correlations of the deviations from both the models and quadratic functions derived from the Dutch qualifying times were all significant except for the 100 m breaststroke and butterfly and the 200 m freestyle female events (p<0.05). Additionally, the 100 m freestyle and backstroke for males and 200 m freestyle male and female events were almost directly proportional. In general deviations from the models were accounted for by the swimmers' training histories. Higher levels of retrospective motivation appeared to be synonymous with higher-level career performance. CONCLUSIONS: This mixed-methods approach helped to confirm the validity of the models that were found to be applicable to adolescent swimmers at all levels, allowing coaches to track performance and set goals. The value of the models in being able to account for the expected performance gains during adolescence allows for peripheral factors that could affect performance to be quantified
Exercise capacity following a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in a young female with cystic fibrosis: a case report

Available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.Physiological Reports published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. on behalf of the American Physiological Society and The Physiological Society.Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, with patients experiencing problems maintaining weight, especially during rapid growth periods such as puberty. The aim of this case report was to monitor the effect of gastrostomy insertion and implementation of overnight supplemental feeding upon clinical outcomes, including body mass index (BMI), lung function (FEV1), and exercise-related variables (maximal oxygen uptake [VO2max] and ventilatory efficiency [VE/VO2]) in an 11-year-old female with CF. Combined incremental and supramaximal exercise testing to exhaustion was performed at four time points: 3 months prior to the procedure (T1), 2 days prior to (T2), 4 months (T3), and 1 year following the procedure (T4). Improvements following gastrostomy insertion were observed at the 1 year follow-up with regards to BMI (+20%); whereas absolute VO2max remained stable and lung function fluctuated throughout the period of observation. Declines in function with regards to body weight relative VO2max (−16.3%) and oxygen uptake efficiency (+7.5%) were observed during this period. This case report is the first to consider exercise-related clinical outcomes in assessing the effect of implementing gastrostomy feeding in CF. The varied direction and magnitude of the associations between variables shows that further investigations are required
